The giants moved 3 of their top prospects up to AA. Sorry to everyone in San Jose as these prospects will be all the way across the country. It was fun while it lasted but these prospects needed to be moved up. No decision on Buster Posey yet. Hopeful these young guys can continue to move through the system and contribute with the big club with in the next few years. Lets go Giants!!!

Wonder if the Giants Brass wants to see how Crawford will fare in AA before selecting/passing on USC SS Grant Green.

That should have absolutely nothing to do with whether or not they draft Grant Green. That decision should be entirely about Grant Green.

I’m really annoyed that it’s being shown in 3D. I can’t do 3D. The glasses don’t fit over my glasses (I don’t have contacts), and the red/blue auras around stuff without the glasses give me a massive headache. So unless they have showings that aren’t in 3D, I won’t be seeing it. Sucks, because I’ve heard it’s going to be incredible.

I dunno. There was some 3D thing during the Super Bowl and I couldn’t get the glasses to fit over my glasses, and then I watched the Chuck 3D ep without the glasses and couldn’t get five minutes in without my head aching. I don’t want to shell out upwards of $15 to see a film I’m not even sure I can sit through.

Trust me

go see it in 3d. The glasses they give you will fit over your glasses unless you have ridiculously huge glasses. They know that a fair number of their audience wear glasses and not contacts and want to see something in 3d.

I brought my glasses home after Monsters vs. Aliens (I got sick of returning them, which they ask you to do but do not require.) Anyway, I just grabbed them and put them on and they easily would have fit over any pair of glasses I have ever worn, including sunglasses which I just tried the 3d glasses with. No prob.

3d movies are incredible now. Any movie you want to see that has a 3d option, go see in 3d. It’s worth the 3 bux.

Just a thought:
Maybe they are keeping Posey in SJ because he is still getting acclimated to calling his won game rather than take signs form a coach. While learning something new and going through the pains of a task that you are expected to be competent at, it might be safer to keep him in the hitter-friendly Cal League to keep him confident at the plate. The last thing I would want is for Posey to be struggling at the plate while having to also worry about the new task of calling pitches.

This is not to say the Posey would struggle hitting in CT, but it could be that they are currently more worried about the pitch calling duties as they already know he can hit.

For Connecticut, this should make their box scores as anticipated as anyone’s right now. The team itself should get a boost with Crawford moving in at shortstop.

The questions are more in San Jose: Who fills in?

Shortstop is the easier answer. I’m looking at Frias getting the starting SS job. He has been strong defensively at third when filling in for Gillaspie at times. A roster spot fill-in will likely come from extended Spring Training rather than Augusta.

Pitching-wise? I expect we’ll see a move back to a five-man rotation. Who fills in? I don’t see anyone on the SJ bullpen who is likely; Here, I wouldn’t be surprised with an Augusta promotion. Kelvin Marte has the best rotation stats, but I expect it’d be the elder statesman Mike Loree. However, if I had to put money on it, I’d go with Wilber Bucardo (assuming he doesn’t have an injury I don’t know of). Maybe even Jorge, but probably Wilber.

In Connecticut, to make room, I could see the team moving up at least one pitcher, if not two. Honestly, I’d probably see Foppert and Pereira going. I know they aren’t the hot pitchers, but at their stages in their careers, if they’re going to do anything, they need to prove themselves in Fresno.

I haven’t seen W. Bucardo in games yet this year. I’m sure he’s at extended spring training if he’s not hurt. It would be nice to see him in San Jose.

And I’m also keen on Frias at short. I was hoping to see him play in San Jose and now it looks like we’ll get that chance.

Connecticut still has rain in the forecast as far as the eye can see, so the timing is a little weird.

Between the higher level, the brutal park, and some natural regression, Crawford could be in for a tough time.

by Evan on May 7, 2009 5:23 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m really worried about the strikeouts. The power is nice, but no one’s expecting him to be a slugger or anything. He seems to know how to walk, but he’s not exactly B.J. Upton either. He’ll need to keep an above average BA to be a good hitter, and I don’t see how he’ll do that when he’s striking out in over 30% of his at bats. If you regressed his BABIP from a crazy high .500 to a still above average .315, you’d get something like .255/.315./.490. Connecticut’s gonna be rough.

Sure, but that’s his San Jose line, not a major league equivalence. And I’m guessing that he’s not going to hit 30 HR’s this year, so that SLG could easily see a substantial decline. Point is – you wouldn’t promote guy to AA in his first pro season after a month of hitting .255/.315./.490 in A+.

Also though, while a .500 BABIP is unsustainable, plenty of players have been able to sustain BABIPs around .330 or so. While it’s unusual, it’s not at all unheard of.

First of all, notice that I regressed Crawford’s BABIP to .315 – still above average.

Second of all, while there are always exceptions, the problem is that every time it’s suggested that a certain player’s BABIP will regress, people dismiss it because “he could be an exception”. It’s possible, but exceptions are rare – that’s why they’re exceptions. Unless a player shows a consistent ability to keep a high BABIP over a substantial amount of time, like Fred Lewis, for example, I think it’s better to assume he’s nothing special in that department.

by Cookyman on May 7, 2009 10:19 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think a .315 BABIP in A+ is actually pretty low. Based on this article, from a while back:

All data from 1996-2004. BABIP = (H-HR)/(2.75*IP+H-HR-SO)

Major leagues .309
Triple-A .322 (International, PCL, AA)
Double-A .318 (Eastern, Southern, Texas)
High-A .323 (California, Carolina, Florida)
Mid-A .321 (Midwest, SAL)
Low-A .327 (New York-Penn, Northwest)
Rookie .348 (Pioneer, Appalachian)

The majors are lowest, the rookie leagues are highest, but the rest is muddled. It turns out, though, that the muddling is likely to be the result of another effect on balls in play, namely altitude. As we know from the Rockies, averages go up in thin air. If we cut the list of leagues down so that we’re only talking about those who play at essentially sea level—losing the PCL, Texas, California, Northwest, and Pioneer leagues—we get the following modified list of BABIPs:

Majors .309
IL+AA .314
Eas+Sou .316
Caro+FSL .316
SAL+ML .321
NY-P .323
App .340

When he pulls out the California league, the numbers for A+ drop to .316, so the average BABIP in California was probably around .335. I don’t know how much these numbers have changed since then, but it’s pretty clear the league just plays that way.

Crawford

.490 SLG in Connectcut? I’ll take that!

I wonder if the move up is to help him adjust to a higher quality of pitching, and away from the expectation he could hit a homerun every at bat. I know you don’t want a player to change his approach because of his environment, but what if the approach is flawed to begin with? Maybe Dodd can teach him something about swinging for the gaps, opposite field, situation batting, blah blah blah, since he won’t be able to rely on hitting mistakes into the parking lot.

I'm a genius genius

Talking about sons and creepy..

I was at the park with my buddy this weekend and his dog (Phin) keep running off. So he was calling Phin every 5 minutes or so. Well on the other side of the park was a family with a boy named Phin. Well long story short cops showed up wondering if my buddy was a child molestor and why he was calling someones child. I was ROFLing for hours

Nice. Talk to the boy and find out when he’s pitching so we can all go ogle him in a dispassionate, objective, not-at-all-creepy way.

Think I have to wait till they come down to Bowie to ogle. They’ve got a 4 game series down here: what’s the odds MadBum starts the games before and after.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

Well damn it to hell

they couldn’t have waited another week? Really?

Ah well, at least I get to see Posey, AnVil, Noonan & Co. when they come to Visalia.

STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.

Alderson?

MadBum had to move to AA soon, but Alderson? The guy has only made it through 5 innings twice all year. I don’t understand the promotion. They should at least wait until he’s pitching with confidence to throw older, better hitters at him.

Alderson dominated the Cal League for a full season last year (led the league in ERA as the youngest starting pitcher) so he should have been in AA from the beginning of the season and he was only in SJ because of the weather.

Got it

I didn’t think about the weather. It made no sense to me to not promote him at the beginning of the season, and then promote him after he struggles a little. Oh, and go Bruins!

they’ve had him on a fairly low pitch count. his last start was more in line with his numbers last year. He was probably just biding his time before the callup, which he knew was coming.

Bonds stands alone.

I might have to go to a game when I’m in CT/NYC next month. Looks like they’re at home when I’m staying in CT.

This makes me really wish we’d be able to visit the in-laws this summer – my mother-in-law lives in a small town about 15 minutes from Norwich. But we probably won’t be back there until Thanksgiving. Ah well.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that pie > cake, that Bochy is endowed by his creator with certain undeniable traits, that among these are veteran man-love, a gigantic skull, and the pursuit of the double switch.

Some San Jose notes

Alderson and Bumgarner are listed on reserve on the MiLB.com roster, of course, but so is Oliver Odle. Hm.

Neal is back in the lineup after missing Monday night’s game.

Buster Posey is not in the lineup. He was removed for a defensive replacement
