Never fear,

I am here!

Also, when I added the event, it said it was 1-1.  I'll believe that.

Yeah, really. They should have just let Sanchez just try and throw stikes, then bring in Medders.

Actually...

I’m reading “Willie’s Time” (best book about the Giants ever) and apparently Alvin Dark was a fan of doing this. The reason being that every pitcher is required to face a batter, so the guy you bring in to give up the IBB can be replaced if the next batter is a pinch hitter. So in this situation, Medders could have been lifted once Duncan was announced, and a lefty could have been brought in.

by cakes on May 31, 2009 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

In other words, if Sanchez threw the IBB and then Medders was brought in, the Giants would have had no choice but to let him face Duncan (which is what Bochy ended up doing anyway).

by cakes on May 31, 2009 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Willie’s Time is FANTASTIC. The problem with that strategy, though, is that Affeldt is the only LHP in the pen and we have no real LOOGY.

Right, just pointing out that it’s not a “mistake”, it’s a strategic decision.

Meh, I think that the chance of it throwing a pitcher off is offset by the L/R stuff. Splits really aren’t that huge of a deal.

by WalrusMan on May 31, 2009 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I realize that Sanchez has real trouble throwing strikes, but from the pen in short outings, he’ll have the electric wild stuff but throw even faster. Maybe that will induce more swings on balls out of the zone. I’m just wishcasting, really.

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on May 31, 2009 2:35 PM PDT reply actions

I think he was pretty much the same velo from the pen as starting though.

It allows three actual hitters to hit before the third batter, Pujols, except in the first inning, but it does ensure that Pujols gets up in the first inning. If Pujols hits fourth, then he is going to lead off more in the second inning, and he conceivably gets fewer PA throughout the season if he hits 4th and not 3rd.

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on May 31, 2009 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions

What I don’t get is why you’re so eager to call up Bowker to replace him. Scheirholtz has consistently hit better than him, both in the minors and in their short time in the majors, and he’s most likely the better defender too.

by Cookyman on May 31, 2009 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Bowker has actual game-changing power, and now has become an OBP monster. Schierholtz just seems to hit so many clunkers and seemingly fails to square anything up. I’m thinking that his contact rate has taken advantage of minor-league defense. Plus, I just hate the look on Schierholtz’s face.

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on May 31, 2009 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Nate has shown more power at every single level, except for Bowker’s great 2007. I’m not sure that Bowker’s BB surge is for real, and he’s still showing underwhelming power for a 25 year old in the PCL. I’ll admit that Nate’s face is kind of annoying.
