From Rotoworld:

The Tigers, Giants and Red Sox have all scouted and/or discussed the possibility of acquiring Corey Hart, reports the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo.

The Giants and Red Sox both have pitching to give, with the Brewers needing a starting pitcher. Hart got off to a slow start on the year, but a couple recent strong games have pushed him to .256/.330/.415 on the season. He makes a lot of sense for the Giants. If the Brewers were to deal Hart, either Jody Gerut or Frank Catalanotto would likely start.

---

I'm not really sure how Corey Hart works on the Giants. MORE OFS!

makes zero sense. We know they’re not benching Winn and Rowand, so it moves Freddie Lewis to the bench. Nate would really never play again. One of them would probably be included in the trade, and I’m not sure that Corey Hart is that much better than either one of them. If you can’t get a player who’s a significant no brainer upgrade from what you have, why do anything?

well

he is 27, so in that respect he is an upgrade. he’s also just a couple years removed from a .900 ops season with speed and good defense. as long as we’re not giving up anyone too good i don’t see the problem.

by zeisenbe on May 31, 2009 10:38 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

first of all, you WOULD have to give up someone good, the Brewers are not giving him away. And secondly, between Freddie and Nate, I don’t think Hart is enough of an upgrade to give up something of value.

From Fanball

“Our View
The Giants seem like a good fit for a deal here, since they have some pitching they would be willing to part with, mainly Matt Cain. The Red Sox could use Hart, but it is unlikely they would trade a top pitching prospect such as Clay Buchholz.”

Yes, let’s trade Matt Cain for an outfielder who’s hitting worse than all three of the starting outfielders we already have!

Hart is no upgrade and if we did trade pitching for him he’d almost certainly be one part of a multi-player package. (Guy has a sub-100 OPS+ for 2008/9.) Here is how he compares to our current corners…

Hart: .275/.324/.477 OPS+ 105
Winn: .288/.346/.424 OPS+ 102
Lewis: .283/.360/.431 OPS+ 105

pass

Ideally, I’d love to wait til the offseason and trade for Shin-Soo Choo of the Indians— I believe he’s up for arbitration, and if he continues to have a good season, Cleveland might be interested in unloading him for the right package of prospects. Throw in a stopgap 1b and we might even have a non-laughable heart of the order in 2010 (ok, not really. It’ll still be laughable).

i never said he did. apologize if it wasn’t clear, but i was talking about two separate moves: one would net us Choo, another to go out and sign a FA stopgap at 1b— a quick glance over at Cot’s and Huff seemed like the most palatable option possibly on the market.

Why would we be making major moves like this in 2010? Posey will be here, and others like Villalona should be right behind. As for Choo, first of all, why would Cleveland give him up? Just because he’s arb eligible isn’t good enough, he’s their cleanup hitter right now. And why would we give up a big package to get him, when we already have Lewis, Nate and Bowker as lefty hitting outfielders? Are we so sure that Choo is that much better than they are? How many more homeruns is Choo going to hit at ATT than they will? As for Huff, you might want him for the rest of this season, but you don’t want him here on a long term deal. I’ll wait for Villalona. Huff would go into shock adjusting from Camden Yards to ATT.

Proud new dad of Edgardo errr Edgar Renteria!!!

by rxmeister on Jun 1, 2009 8:25 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

1) Why would we do this?: We need good hitters and Choo is exactly the kind of young, entering his prime guy you’d look to add as you build a contender. There are prospects on the way, but the ones at corner OF are a fairly long way away and who knows if they’ll ever develop— you certainly can’t plan on it now. Winn is a FA who probably won’t be re-signed, Schierholtz has proven nothing at this point, and given his pretty horrible pitch recognition, I’d be surprised if he’s ever more than a 4th OF. That leaves at least one corner spot that needs filling for the foreseeable future. (And I don’t understand what Posey and Villalona have to do with adding a young, corner OF, impact bat… those guys are going to need support from other positions you know, even if they do miraculously get here fast and start producing immediately.)

2) Why would Cleveland give him up: Presumably, because he’s going to become an expensive player in a couple of years and the Giants offer them an enticing package of prospects… I’m no expert on arb. years and free agency, and I read the trade rumors on another site (the Giants were not specifically mentioned) so I’m not going to spout off about exactly how expensive he’s going to be, and when, but the Indians are 22-30 right now, better only than Oakland in the AL. After a disappointing year last year, they may decide it’s time to shift gears and rebuild a bit, and a player like Choo could net them a good haul. Understand: I don’t think this will be cheap, but sometimes expensive trades are worth it too, if the player coming back is valuable enough.

3) Already addressed the questions about our other OFs, I think… but come on, seriously? You’re going to throw Schierholtz and Bowker at me as reasons why the Giants shouldn’t try to acquire a middle of the order bat who plays corner OF? Fine then, I don’t want a new 3b because I think Ryan Rohlinger is the shiznit. I’m exaggerating a little, but you see my point. And yes, I’m pretty sure Choo is better than they are. He’s entering his prime (will be 27 on July 13), has a CAREER OPS+ of 127 (over the past two years, he’s been significantly better than that), and solid OBP.

4) I’ll address Huff here… he was more of a kind of throw in, and I’d absolutely take him on a two year deal (the maximum that Buster Olney speculated he might get earlier today in his blog). No doubt his power numbers would come down, but that’s an argument to prevent us from going after so many players, especially left handed hitters, that I think at some point we’re really just going to have to overlook it. In the case of Huff, maybe his home/road splits will be dramatic, but if it’s that or a few more years of Travis Ishikawa while we wait for AnVil, I’d rather the former. But as I mentioned, I see Huff as more of a stopgap… there are other options out there for that. Adam LaRoche perhaps? Sign him to the right kind of two year deal, and hope he bounces back… I’d be ok with that.

5) How many home runs will Choo hit at AT&T: I have no idea. Neither do you. He’s on pace for something like 25 this year with Cleveland, but his power is still developing. It’s not inconceivable that he might hit 20 homers with the Giants before those numbers steadily rise over the course of his career. I dunno, I guess I just think eventually we’re going to have to risk it at take a chance on a lefty power hitter unless we want our lineup to be incredibly right-handed. Might as well be on a good young player.

6) It’s my rosterbation, dammit. It may not be optimistic, but if I can’t fantasize about young-20 somethings scoring runs for the Giants on the internet, then where can I?

I don’t know about Choo, but I would definitely hope that we make major moves in 2010. Posey and Villalona aren’t enough on their own, and the two of them (in particular Villalona) can’t be depended upon to ever make a big impact. We can’t just keep wasting seasons while we wait for our prospects to develop – we should take concurrent actions that help the team without harming our long-term prospects. Making major moves in 2010 doesn’t mean giving up all hope of playing Villalona and Posey; it should mean having a better ballclub while we wait for them and when they get here.

Now, whether it means that given Sabean’s history is another question entirely.

Well apart from 2007 (when he was very good) he hasn’t been a good player (not even breaking the 1 win mark even if you pro-rated his playing time) & has been worse than the outfielders we already have. It’s too early to make a definative judgement on him either way but i’d want some evidence that his 2007 wasn’t just an abnormality.
