And in even better news, Bochy is apparently sticking with Pablo at 1st, Uribe at 3rd. I’m so glad I follow this team, and not some really lame team like the Cardinals.

it also doesn’t help this team as they go forward into the future. Everybody wants to contend, but this year was supposed to also be used for evaluation. Now we won’t know if Ishi is the first baseman going forward or not. Not only that, but Guzman will be stuck at Fresno and we won’t find out about him either. It would be one thing if Uribe was a serious long term third base candidate, but the guy is just a stopgap. It won’t answer any questions about the 2010 team.

it doesn’t look as bad in print as the idiots doing the pre game made it out to be. Sounds like they’ll re-evaluate again when Pablo is healthy enough to go back to third.

Will be interesting to see how Sanchez/Whiteside battery works out. Always thought Sanchez relied too much on Molina to get him thru a game and now Sanchez will need to focus more. Which is a good thing. Expecting good things.

by wilriv21 on May 30, 2009 10:29 PM PDT up reply actions

wow…no wonder we don’t trust bochy with veterans and refer to schierholtz as “who?”. It seems lately that the only time an OF is taken out, the player being removed is lewis. Ishikawa improves his patience at the plate and provides good D while improving and what does he get? a seat on the bench. unbelievable.

Absolutely horrible & depresing decision but i was expecting it to happen sooner or later. Given that Sondoval was doing alright at 3B it’s stupid to stop him from continuing there as he holds much more value there. Given that Ishikawa has been heating up lately & has far more potential than Uribe it’s stupid to play Uribe ahead of him. Well it’s stupid to play Uribe instead of anyone actually, he’s a replacement level player without any upside. If you’re not playing Ishikawa (a replacement level player with upside) then you should be playing Guzman or anyone else. Uribe is ok as a bench player but it’s inexcusable to have him start but then Bochy’s clueless as to the value (or lack of it) of players like him, just as he was with Castillo last year.

Sandoval has arm issues, which will prevent him from playing 3rd or Catcher, at the risk of a more serious injury.

by CB30 on May 31, 2009 2:00 AM PDT up reply actions

I understand why Sandoval is playing 1B at the moment, but Bochy’s said that he’s going to continue there (with Uribe at 3B) even when his arm issues have cleared up.

Well that’s the general implication from the article above and on the article on the Giants mlb site. You’re correct, there’s no actual quote from Bochy claiming that’s going to happen, so i may have jumped the gun, but from what they’ve said, that’s the way they seem to be going.

Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!

by GiantFan on May 31, 2009 3:04 AM PDT up reply actions

Oh, I should have read the article. That sounds like a horrible idea. It doesn’t really help us in the short term, since Uribe hasn’t actually been hitting better than Ishikawa, and in the long term Ishikawa loses playing time and Pablo loses value.

I’ve never understood why he hasn’t gotten the Bonds treatment yet. To be honest, I haven’t seen Ludwick bat, I’ve been in San Diego and I’m not about to watch Padres V Cardinals, but speaking from no knowledge whatsover, why not just walk Pujols to get to Ray Durham 2.0?

because the Bonds treatment

was dumb for Bonds, and it’s even dumber for Pujols. His OBP is not even .500.

by sayheybk on May 30, 2009 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought they did a good job of pitching around Pujols yesterday. They walked him twice, and the HR’s came leading off innings. The one at bat they should have walked him and didn’t was the at bat that Zito struck him out. That being said, Pujols has entered that Bonds zone, where only ARod and Manny have visited before. Unless you’re an elite pitcher like Santana or Lincecum, you simply cannot get them out, so pitching to them makes no sense. I would walk him every chance I get.

Bochy continues to be an idiot

I’m more upset over Bochy’s comment after the game that he left Zito in the game because it was “his game and he earned it.” No, numbskull, the idea is to win the game. If Zito’s feelings are hurt in the process, he has 126 million dollars to wipe his tears away with. Besides that, I think Zito would have preferred to be taken out and win, then to stay in and lose. Zito gets by with guile and slop. Fourth time around to the same hitters is asking a lot of him.
