Community Mock Draft: The Giants!
#1: Stephen Strasburg RHP, San Diego State University (Washington Nationals)
#2: Dustin Ackley OF/1B, University of North Carolina (Seattle Mariners)
#3: Aaron Crow RHP, Fort Worth Cats (San Diego Padres)
#4: Kyle Gibson RHP, University of Missouri (Pittsburgh Pirates)
#5: Alex White RHP, University of North Carolina (Baltimore Orioles)
In the last round, Alex White edged out Tyler Matzek, Tanner Scheppers, and Grant Green.
Next up are YOUR San Francisco Giants. Several names have come up in connection to the Giants - Donavan Tate is one, Tyler Matzek is another. Jonathan Mayo's fist mock draft had them going off the board a bit for Michael Trout, but in his second mock draft he admitted that was too much of a reach. Oh, and Sabean attended a recent Aaron Crow start, I believe, but our mock draft has him long gone.
I've added Mike Leake to the options, since wilriv has mentioned him as someone the Giants should look at.
Scouting reports:
Kentrail Davis OF, University of Tennessee
Mychal Givens SS, Jefferson High School (Florida)
Grant Green SS, University of Southern California
Tyler Matzek LHP, Capistrano Valley High School (California)
Mike Leake LHP, Arizona State University
Shelby Miller RHP, Brownwood High School (Texas)
Mike Minor LHP, Vanderbilt University
Matt Purke LHP, Klein High School (Texas)
Tanner Scheppers RHP, Saint Paul Saints
Michael Trout OF, Millville High School (New Jersey)
Donavan Tate OF, Cartersville High School (Georgia)
Jacob Turner RHP, Westminster High School (Missouri)
Tim Wheeler OF, Sacramento State University
Zack Wheeler RHP, East Paulding High School (Georgia)
By the way, I'm going to call it a day for these posts after this pick, since we've reached the Giants. If anyone else wants to keep them going, feel free.

I’m thinking it’s either Tate or Matzek. Could be another of the high school pitchers, though.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that pie > cake, that Bochy is endowed by his creator with certain undeniable traits, that among these are veteran man-love, a gigantic skull, and the pursuit of the double switch.
Adopted Giant: Fred Lewis, who can still draw a walk.

Another question: who do you NOT want?
For me, it’s Tanner Scheppers (because of his injury history), Grant Green, and Alex White (because of performance issues). But I promise not to have a throw-myself-down-the-stairs moment regardless.

Don't want:
1. Donovan Tate; I have absolutely no confidence in any member of the Giants organization being able to polish the skills of a young, toolsy hitter.
2. Grant Green; I have absolutely no….oh, wait. Nah, this guy just isn’t worth a #6 pick.
3. Mike Minor or Michael Trout (or anybody named Michael).
4. Jacob Turner; Boras client, iirc. Not worth the drama in this case.
5. Kentrail Davis. Fourth round? Sure! First round – no thanks.
6. Mychal Givens; see #1 above.

…if you want to gamble a 3rd or 4th round pick on a toolsy guy, go for it. But I still have no confidence in the organization’s ability to help the young hitter develop. Crawford’s strikeout problem will be interesting to watch.

I Like Mike
With Strasburg, Crow, Ackley already off the board the next person on the wilriv board is Mike Leake of ASU. Leake is a RHP with great command and poise. SF brass was at a recent game watching Leake pitch a shutout.
Though short for a pitcher, he is 6’0’, Leake has all the pitches, movement and is very athletic. Commonly referred tp Tim Hudson as his comp.
Leake’s stats are failry comparable to Strasburg:
PITCHERS
Name………………. Pos… B/T… Ht… Wt…School ………. Yr.. Age.. W… L… ERA… G… SV… IP… H… BB… K
Stephen Strasburg rhp… R/R… 6-5.. 220.. San Diego St.. Jr. 20….13…. 0…. 1.24…. 14…. 0…. 102…. 57…. 19…. 180

I’m getting a bit tired of the “Giants don’t develop toolsy hitters, so don’t draft Tate” line. If there are serious questions about Tate’s hitting that would make him a bad choice at #6 then don’t draft him. If he’s going to ask for a billion dollars, then don’t draft him.
BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT… Please don’t use players like Wendel Fairley, Fred Lewis, and Dante Powell as definitive proof that Tate will be a bust with the Giants. Yes, systems develop players, but I think the main factor is the player’s skeelz, and most of the evidence I’ve seen puts Tate in an almost entirely different category than these other toolsy players that have been busts with the Giants.
Baseball America still ranks the dude as the #3 talent in the whole draft, right behind Ackley and Strasburgh. Same publication that put Timmy at #2 back in 2006.
Yes, I would love a prep arm with tons of upside, but if Tate really has the tools and the Giants won’t have to sacrifice other priorities too much in order to draft him, grab the guy.

I’m more worried that the Giants don’t draft the right toolsy hitters. I think the problem with Tate is mystery – high school stats have no reliability, so we only know him to be toolsy and athletic. Who has any idea whether he has plate discipline, or projectable power, or a good swing without giant holes, etc?
In this type of situation, we have to trust a) Giants Front Office, and/or b) crusty cigar-chewing scout-type, and for good reason, many of us aren’t in the habit of trusting either of those.
The scouts, though, at least have some idea of what they are doing, unlike the amateur scouts who watch one grainy video and decide a HS player is going to be the next Frank Robinson.
Shikantanza is right, of course, to say don’t use players like Fairley et al to say Tate can’t make it, but all we can really do is read that Baseball America or Keith Law or Some Other Trusted Source likes Tate and decide whether we believe that source.

I'll vote Matzek, but I trust the Giants to do what they do
Any word on Rich Porythress? I have seen him bounce around on mock drafts, and from what I have seen, he wont fall to the 2nd round. It would be aweosme if he did though.

Hit two more homers today.

I’ve heard that his range and overall defense is pretty bad, though.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...

Please don't draft Tim Wheeler!
From the new BA mock draft (today’s), which has the G’s taking Matzek:
“6. GIANTS. San Francisco could use a hitter but all of its best options will be pitchers. If Minor, Crow and Gibson go 3-4-5, the Giants will get their pick of the best high school arms: Matzek, Purke, Wheeler and righthanders Jacob Turner (Missouri) and Shelby Miller (Texas). Matzek touched 98 mph in a start earlier this week, which jumps him to the front of the line.
Projected Pick: TYLER MATZEK."
98?!?!?!? Please, please, please, please get him!

I voted Matzek because the Giants seem to be following him pretty tightly. I do think he’d be a great pick; however, I’d like to see Tate. His ceiling seems to be pretty special even as there are doubts about the bat. Still, I think they’ll draft a high school pitcher.

Peter Gammons sez:
In this wake, we are missing the pitching the Giants are amassing to the north, not only with Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum and the revival of Barry Zito, but the knowledge that within a year they will have added two more great arms in Tim Alderson and Madison Bumgarner (6-1, 1.09 with a 44-8 strikeout-walk rate moving from the California League to the Eastern League) and the expectation that Buster Posey is their Matt Wieters; beware the Giants the next few years because Brian Sabean, with Dick Tidrow’s advice and consent, is back judging and developing talent.
And draft info:
The Giants, who don’t seem to miss, have been rumored to take Millville (N.J.) outfielder Mike Trout; Sabean has been to see Mission Viejo (Calif.) left-hander Tyler Matzek and may go in that direction.

So
So the Giants could land Trout? Sounds fishy to me.
