Drabek could still surprise us and win a Cy Young last year. Don’t judge me yet.

Props to mxmob33 for his lamentation that we drafted Emmanuel Burriss instead of Joba Chamberlain.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...

Confession: I was upset we didn’t get Parmelee or Marrero. WE NEEDED DINGERZ!

I didn’t realize that Will Carroll called Lincecum out as a steal on draft day.
Randy Winn is going to catch that. And he'll do it real classy-like too.

LOL at freaking out about 8th round picks
Randy Winn is going to catch that. And he'll do it real classy-like too.
So he projects as a reliever?
color me disappointed.

Even when he was tearing up the minors, people were talking about him like he would be a reliever. I never understood that. He had always started, never had problems starting or with stamina, and had crazy good stuff in his starts. Somehow, people added those qualities up and got reliever.

I was concerned about his secondary pitches and for a brief time I subscribed to the reliever theory, albeit in a kind of lukewarm way. Glad it worked out better for him.

My theory is it snowballs. First, a scout says he’s got great stuff, but with that delivery he might have injury problems and end up a reliever. Then, someone (BP, BA, etc.) publishes a scouting report that says he’s great but a scout thinks his future is as a reliever. Then, suddenly it’s scouts think he’ll be a reliever.
Anyways, at the time I understood that his future could be as a reliever, but I didn’t get why people wanted his present (at the time) to be a reliever. To me, there was no reason to make him a reliever until he had proven he couldn’t start.

I guess it was just GIANTS BRAS and rosterbating. Neither makes a hell of a lot of sense and you should feel bad about yourself for doing it.

Rosterbating is ok, as long as you confess afterward.

Re: Brian Bocock SS, Stetson U
Honestly, that pick was just about the name. I don’t know the first thing about the kid.

And right after that
Drabek may have gotten drunk during practice, but Lincecum clearly does mass amounts of coke before interviews.
“People call me a freak of nature,” Lincecum said. “It’s not unusual for me to just start dancing around out of the blue. I like to do back flips and walk around on my hands.”

Everyone was freaking out in that thread, but Slo’s freakout was especially epic.
I was freaking out at the same time, but I didn’t start regularly commenting on MCC until a few months later, so only my wife had to hear it.

I can’t really post on draft day threads as we’re working frantically to get the picks and write them up, but I can present the last three drafts and our reactions:
2006: Who TF is Tim Lincecum…? Oh. Hey. He might be pretty good.
2007: Who TF is Madison Bumgarner…? Oh. Hey. This might suck.
2008: Oh shit it’s Buster Posey (not to be confused with Oh Shit! It’s Dr. Tran!)…
We’re basically piloting the Tim Wheeler bandwagon for now. In 06 I didn’t have a guy I wanted or cared about, but in 07 I was all about Beau Mills. And last year of course I was in the Smoak camp.

In 2007, I didn’t really know the players available, but I wanted hitters so desperately.

I did calm down a bit when they started drafting hitters. Who, ironically, were worse picks than Bumgarner and Alderson.

I had calmed down by the bottom of the thread! :D?
Then I think I freaked out again with Alderson.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
lol
Like college closers? Try drafting a high school closer
Okay, I’m going to bang my head against the wall now.
But then later…
Actually now that the dust is settling, I kinda like this draft. (Moreso if Alderson can stick as a SP).

I liked Alderson from the get-go and I had to warm up to mad Bum. Are you ready to crap yourself all over again and laugh about it a year later? :D:D:D:D

all of those over-reactions are nothing compared to the hilarity of the freakouts over drafting Posey. “We just drafted the best player in college baseball who was in the top 3 of everybody’s draft ranking?!?!?! I hate Sabean! I’m going to kill myself!”

I really, really, really didn’t get that at the time. I mean, good god. Smoak was my BPA at the time too, but I was thrilled with Posey.
