WTF?! Giants linked to Peavy?!
To be honest I'm quite perplexed...although if we ever did get him we would destroy the Dodgers in head to head matchups with him and Timmy....
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/05/stark-on-peavy-oswalt-phillies-derosa-giants.html
The Padres' recent winning streak has not changed their intention of trading Jake Peavy. The Dodgers and Cubs are in Peavy's first tier of choices, follwed by the Giants, Cardinals, and Astros. The Angels would be the one AL team he'd consider. The East Coast is a long shot. Also, Peavy will want his 2011-13 partial no-trade clause to become a full no-trade. Peavy's friend Roy Oswalt has been unsuccessful in lobbying Astros owner Drayton McLane, as the 'Stros can't take on Peavy's contract. As for the Dodgers, GM Ned Colletti told the L.A. Times he hasn't talked to the Padres about Peavy since the pitcher vetoed the White Sox deal.
And then there was this tidbit as well for potential bats we have supposedly discussed....
The Giants seek a middle-of-the-order bat, and Jonathan Sanchez is being dangled. Three targets they haven't had success on are Dan Uggla, Jorge Cantu, and possibly Carlos Lee. Lee, according to one Stark source, doesn't intend to waive his no-trade for anyone.

It’s not saying the Giants have any interest. It’s saying that Peavy would probably okay a trade to San Francisco because it’s in the NL and pretty close to his home in San Diego.
That’s it.

It’s not really what what i’d describe as being linked to them, just a list of places that Peavy would be willing to play in. There’s nothing to suggest that we’re interested in him or that he’s asking to join us specifically, we just happen to be a team he wouldn’t mind playing for (which i think most of us could have assumed anyway) If say i were to say that i want to play for the Giants you wouldn’t say that “Giants linked to GiantsFan” as there’s nothing to suggest that a move is going to be made.

trading for Peavy would be smart, if the Padres are willing to trade him within the division. It’s the same philosophy as to why a team loaded with pitchers still continues to select pitching in the high rounds of the draft. Number one is that you can never have enough good pitching, and number two is that you can trade pitching to get the bat(s) that you might need if you have more than enough. I can’t see why the Padres would want to trade him and then see him five times every year, but if they’re talking to the Dodgers, they would certainly talk to the Giants.

I would make that trade in a second. You simply don’t know if Alderson is going to be a stud as yet, and if it’s not Buster or Anvil, it’s a worthwhile risk. Imagine this rotation if you slide Peavy into the inconsistent Sanchez’ spot. Then again, the number one need is a bat, and you have to see if a similar package can get you an elite hitter first. By the way, I don’t consider any bat I’ve heard on the market so far to be elite.

I just don’t think the Giants are far enough along, yet, to make the kind of deal for Cantu or Uggla.
The roster defiantly has a lot less holes then the last several years but I think 1-2 more need filling ( or those filling holes not currently problem have to be better) before the squad should be looking to increase short term for medium or longer term. Getting Cantu or Uglla does improves to 83 -84 wins ( I will generously, for discussion sake, say either player adds 4-5 wins) and Giants still do not get into the post season.
In summary this is not the season the Giants should be thinking they are 1 piece away from a playoff run. I am not sure ’10 will be that season either (but I think ’10 will be closer to that). Cantu might even be a free agent next year (Cot’s has him down for 4 years of service time) and Uggla has what one more season before free agency? The team would not reap enough short term gain to a make that worth while yet.

Ah Crap! I just realized we were talking about Peavy in this branch.
$15 MM in 2010, $16MM in 2011, $17 MM in 2012, either $4MM or$22MM in 2013. I think I would rather risk Cain and Tim stay healthy then Peavy will. Not to mention the $15MM should be able to but a better talent upgrade are at least one to fielding positions. I will leave the night mare that the club will not spend much over $90MM -$100MM in payroll alone.

Also, true level talent really doesn’t have anything to do with a single season award like the Cy Young. It’s about who had the best season in that year.

AHHH
Can’t have it both ways.
Saber crowd will argue all damn day long that ERA and WINS are poor stats to evaluate a pitcher by because they are results based, and many of those results are out of the pitchers control.
ERA + falls into that category. Now if you want to say that a single season award should be results based, then ERA is a perfectly good stat to use.
But last year everyone was all up at arms about Lincecum V. Santana ‘cause Tim’s FIP was over a full run lower than Santana’s, despite Santana having a lower ERA (and hence, a higher ERA+).
Everyone on this site said that Tim should win because he had pitched better, even tho the results had been about the same.
Now, without looking at the respective FIP’s etc for the year in question, I don’t know if it would change anything – but my point is I’m suprirsed to see someone from this somewhat saber friendly sight making an arguement that Zito didn’t deserve his Cy based on his ERA+ that year

by rotorueter on May 29, 2009 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Er, wait, that's not my point
Id idn’t look up ERA +.
My point is, ERA + is a results based stat. FIP isn’t.
Many on here argued that, while Lincecum and Santana had nearly identical ERA (results), Lincecum’s FIP was nearly a run lower than Santana. Translation, Lincecum pitched much better than Santana, Santana just got lucky w/ the results.
So for that same crowd to then flip around and argue that, because Pedro Martinez had a better ERA (results) than Barry Zito in 2002 he deserved the cy young more is a little weird.
Again, I haven’t looked at their FIP’s (and really, Zito has been shown to out perform FIP consistently anyway) but the whole premise of using FIP to judge a cy young one year and the ERA another is inconsistent and dumb.
by FairweatherFan on May 29, 2009 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
And fail
how you can argue that Zito at any point in his life (except perhaps now) had a higher level of talent than Pedro? Pedro’s FIP was more than a run and a half lower than Zito in ‘02, and you’re contradicting yourself by saying Zito consistently outperforms FIP (he is consistently better than he is talented?).
Space.
It's a problem we face.
So we never go anywhere.

WINS are bad not because that are “results based” but because they are teammate dependent.
ERA is bad, not because it’s results based, but because it doesn’t count errors, and it’s park dependent (and also doesn’t count innings, but ERA+ same thing… you obv. have to use innings)
I think you could use FIP in an award argument IF THE ERA+/IP stats (results) were equal – like a tie breaker.

should not be awarded for talent level but for performance. RA+ would be better, I agree. If you have a perfect method to separate out defensive contributions, I would use that too… but I don’t think FIP etc. is good for award picks.

I would think if we traded for Peavy it would be to move Cain for real bat.

Right,
And in that sense, it’s an entirely lateral move.
And frankly I’d rather keep Cain.
Sanchez + for Peavy so you can trade Cain for bat is completely lateral to Sanchez + for a bat and keep Cain.

Or maybe Sabes could use his superior negotiating skillz to trade Peavy for more worth than Sanchez+

You know what sucks
Having to pencil in Zito into the rotation whenever someone rosterbates D:
Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all
If Dustin Pedroia played in Seattle, not many people would be talking about him.

how sweet it would be if we could get Peavy with A-Goz
sort of like the marlins unloaded Dontrelle’s contract onto the Tigers with the Cabrera trade. Cain, Sanchez, Ishikawa, Jesus Guzman and Alderson should get it done, no?

this is my wet dream
I think it would be more based around Madbum, Alderson, Villalona, not so much Cain.
Cain is only a few years from getting expensive. Probably not what the Padres want. Maybe Sanchez is part of that deal.
No way that goes down, however.

Yeah, I need to wash my sheets too
If I’m not mistaken I believe that Gozalez’s contract and Cain’s are very similar and expire at the same time. But the pads will not trade Gonzalez because they have no need to, they might if they can unload Peavy’s contract. You gotta remember that they were willing to trade Peavy for Clayton Richard (WHO?) +3, so they seem pretty damn desperate for money NOW. I’ll agree with you that they would want offense in return and Ishikawa and Guzman are not enough.
Jon Heyman of SI did a story on why the Pads should trade Gonzalez, recently.
