New Blog: The Boxing Bulletin for Boxing Fans!

I have an idea, but it won't be easy

I wonder, how many of you would be willing to fully boycott the Giants.  No more watching games.  No more radio.  No more reading anything on the net (except this site which would be a HQ.)  No more spending a dime on merchandise or game tickets or anything.  Some of you may already see where I am heading so for the others I will get there fairly quickly.

Perhaps it is far-fetched, but we, the fan base, have a lot of power.  It would take a lot of work, but who would be willing to completely boycott the Giants and encourage others to do so, as well.

The goal would be to make a financial impact on the team with a unified front DEMANDING the immediate firing of Bruce Bochy and the coaching staff along with Sabean.  Even though our GM has overseen a few nice drafts in a row, I suspect it is more the people under him that did such a good job.  In any case, it is clear we need to move in a new direction.

Now there are some that say the future looks good, and this is true.  It is also true that for years it has been clear what needed to be done and Sabean did not do it.  We went into the offseason with one main need: offense.  We got an over the hill SS.  That's it.  True, it wasn't the best free agent class, but there were solutions out there.

Perhaps this is a frustrated pipe dream.  Perhaps not.  I do know that every day I live in fear that Sabean will do something stupid.  In my mind, this would require hundreds of people to write individual letters to the team specifiying exactly why they are unhappy and stating clearly that no more money will be coming from that source.

Before anyone posts all the negatives to this.  Namely the fact that it is incredibly difficult to organize a protest of this nature or the fact that the team won't care if they only get a few complaints because the advertisers will still be paying them and it would take a while before any sort of impact would be felt.  Really, if only 1000 people did this it would barely nudge the bottom line.

Ultimately, the reason the team is here is because the fans pay for it.  If enough people made a stink it might cause waves.  I do believe that if 1000 people wrote letters to the team that would have an impact.

It's a romantic notion and essentially a waste of time as baseball is a luxury but yeah.  It's been running through my mind for a while and wonder what other people think.  Please post your comments, thoughts, ridicule, baking ideas, and even arguments against my idea.  I'd really love to hear some pro-Bochy, pro-coaching staff arguments...if there are any.

After reading all the posts so far, this one seems to be the most true.

No one wants to give up their love. That’s only natural.

I do think that the responses are indicative of the state of our democracy and how for the most part, people feel like they have no influence over those in power. I’m not really surprised. Especially since baseball is a nice distraction from that very distinct lack of power that most of us feel.

It would probably be better to use that energy to make a positive effect on something that really mattered.

Thanks for the healthy dose of sobriety.

This is true. It is also true that, for many of the people on this site, if they felt they truly had the power to get rid of Bochy or Sabean, they would. Unfortunately many people feel powerless to the extent they don’t even consider that they could potentially have a major impact.

I’m pretty hopeful for the future of this ballclub. Sabes’ contract is expiring soon, Bochy won’t be around for much longer, and the minor leagues are fairly well-stocked. I’m pretty “meh” right now about them—definitely not passionate enough to boycott.

Boycott with your wallet

When i moved back to SF in 97 i went to a lot of games… maybe 20 to 25 games a year. The past few years my average is down to 1 to 3 games a year. Ever since the Giants FO decided not give Bonds any protection in the lineup i have been “protesting” by not giving them my hard earned money. I watch on TV and Radio, but as long as I don’t patronize their sponsors, they don’t get a dime from me.

It’s working too. Just look at the offense now1

My buddy and I were at the game last night. We were seriously wondering what kind of protest it would take to get rid of the wretched Renel, but I digress…

A letter writing campaign is a great idea, but i have a funny feeling Sabean can’t read.

Ratatouille had two of the grossest scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie…

A huge collection of rats working in a kitchen…
And a huge collection of rats falling through a roof.

I wanted to vomit after that second one. I really liked the movie though. My wife can’t watch it anymore because it makes her sick, both from a disgusting rat perspective, and because she was going through seriously bad early pregnancy sickness at the time.

Cartoons were originally created for the entertainment of adults. It’s only in the past 20 years or so that they’ve been targeted toward children. Pixar makes movies for people of all ages. They just happen to be animated.

Right, because works like Waltz with Bashir, Persepolis, Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Princess Mononoke, and a hell of a lot of other excellent animated films are for children. Rape, murder, war, stalking, homelesslessn, HIV, dumping babies in the trash, the Islamic Revolution, drug use, the raping of the land, those things are for children, right?

Tokyo Godfathers is my favorite Christmas film there is. It concerns themes of togetherness, family, belonging, finding your way after you’ve been lost for so long, and the power of love. The characters have to go through hell to find those things. It truly made me appreciate the things I have.

I happen to think that the type of films a person enjoys

Is an extremely lucid window into their personality, and hence their life experience.

My life has been fairly free of strife and personal identity struggle, as such I don’t tend to identify or enjoy films that center around those themes.

I do however tend to fantasize about grandiose human sacrifice and accomplishment, and as such it’s no mystery that the films I enjoy follow that trend.

Paprika is good, but the real problem is that where his films like Perfect Blue and Millenuem Actress play with perception through reality, Paprika pretty much discards reality altogether. It kind of neuters the whole effect. It’s still a good movie, though. It’s just nowhere near as good as the others.

Which also has to have its context, as Milleneum Actress and Tokyo Godfathers are two of my favorite movies period.

I honestly don't have a problem with you not liking animated movies.

Everyone has different tastes, and that’s fine.

What bothers me is the very inaccurate and closed-minded dismissal of them. If that is truly the reason you don’t watch them, I honestly feel bad for you. You are truly missing out on some of the better films being made. To be sure, there are quite a few being made just for children, and most of those which are (and quite a few of those which aren’t) are crap. But there are some truly great ones.

I had this eye-opening with Toy Story; I watched the trailer, rolled my eyes, and wondered just how a six-year old might enjoy such a silly looking film, much less anyone else. But my high school crush asked me to go with her, so of course I went. And I was floored. The truly wonderfully layered story, the incredible character arcs, and a very, very touching story of the loss of innocence (and the regaining of it) is still a movie I can not get enough of.

What I’d suggest is take this group’s suggestions for three truly great animated films, and see if they can change your mind about them. All I’d ask is that you make a good faith effort, and approach them with as open a mind as you can when you watch them.

And, gang, I’m going to set a non-binding rule – If you make three recommendations, only one Pixar film. And only one Miyazaki film. If we’re going to open Fairweather Fan’s mind to these, we need a wide-view.

My suggestions:
Wall•E – This is a hard choice between it and Toy Story. Both seem like such low-concept vehicles that deliver on an emotional and moral level that few Hollywood movies could reach. Wall•E wins out because it is a movie that is truly beautiful as well as touching, and can appeal to even classic film students in how it tells stories with, and without, words. An art ironically lost on many animated film makers these days.

Spirited Away – Maybe not the best of Hayao Miyazaki’s films, but I can’t but Princess Mononoke just because between it and Wall•E, I think one might dismiss me as a lefy-eco-freak. (Note Mononoke became the highest-grossing film in Japanese history of any kind until Titanic happened). Spirited Away is often described as a new age Alice in Wonderland.

Cowboy Bebop – It’s not a movie, strictly, but it’s a wonderfully adult series that people can get into.

My friend Roby is recommending Ratatouille, as that movie is certainly not aimed at kids and helped to a convincing job for her ex, who sounded the same as you.

I’d agree with both Wall-E and Spirited away. I actually kind of expect those to be nearly universally chosen as they are, IMO, the pinnacles of Pixar and Miyazakis careers to this point. I shy away from Mononoke because it’s pretty grim. Spirited Away is magical.

Also SA is fairly lefty eco-friendly, as well. Just a different aspect of nature.

My third would be Bolt. It is a step above standard kiddie fare. It’s warm and sweet and a lot of fun. A hard film not to like. I could go on and on, but I won’t. I’ll just make that my third vote.

I eagerly anticipate seeing what three films the McCoven chooses.

City of God

Was a movie that I walked into completely unaware. My GF picked it out because she thought it was something else.

I was entirely unprepared for what is quite possibly one of the most brutal movies I have ever seen. (at least, of one that attempts to be somewhat based in reality)

It also made me think long and hard about humanity, and the state of human struggle. I don’t know if I could watch it again because it is so powerful – much like someone who lived through a traumatic situation would not want to go through it again.

Ironically, I thought blood diamond was pretty good too – despite whatshisfuck.

Also, how do you feel about me creating a new fanpost with a poll so we could vote on your Pixar film. You’ve already chosen your Miyazaki. Also in a new thread (or here of course) we could argue for movie #3.

Altho I will say It’s not as if I haven’t seen ANY of these movies.

I’ve seen Toy Story, numerous times. A perfectly good movie – and yes it does amuse me as an adult. I don’t think of it as a major contribution to the arts, but that is just personal opinion. I’ll give Wall-E a try.

Spirited Away has been added to my Netflix.

I’m not going to watch Cowboy Bebop tho. I’m perfectly familiar with it (unfortunately) and all I can say is I do not, under any circumstances, watch anime (for personal reasons, if you like). I’ll gladly watch something else.

by FairweatherFan on May 28, 2009 9:03 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You should know then...

…that Miyazaki is part of the Japanese school of animation, so whatever is stopping you from watching Anime may stop you from watching that. I will admit, I’m curious, but if it is personal reasons, I won’t press for an explanation. That would be a shame though…a lot of anime is cringe-worthy, especially if you associate it mostly/exclusively with the Pokemon/Sailor Moon range, but there are some truly great ones out there.

This is what I think...

If Wall•E could not garner even a best picture nomination, I don’t think the Academy is ready. I would’ve nominated Wall•E over either The Reader or Benjamin Button, and honestly, probably Milk.

And I say this as someone who idolizes David Fincher as a director and really wishes he could be as good as him.

I disagree. Though I think Wall-E deserved the nomination the trophy, I think it may have opened the door. There are a great number of people who felt it should have a nod. Because of this it is possible that the academy looks at Up a little bit differently.

Also, it is possible that Up will move people even more than Wall-E did.

Thank you.

I’m perfectly content chatting about films, to be honest.

My reason for the post was to see if people thought it was possible for the public to influence the team. The answer was pretty clear. I don’t feel bad at all.

by positiveuphemism on May 27, 2009 3:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure

When a team sucks for a long enough period of time, it financially influences the ownership group.

But I don’t think it’s really possible as some direct effort. If enough people were dissatisfied enough to sign on to something like this, they would already be making their own personal choices not to spend – so it wouldn’t really change things.

by FairweatherFan on May 27, 2009 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think if anything, the team’s worrying about public perception is one of the things that have contributed to its lack of success in the last four years.

by cakes on May 27, 2009 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Possible? Sure.

That wasn’t how I read your post, though…I understood it to be asking if we were willing to boycott, which would mean (a) we though it was possible to influence the team and (b) we were sufficiently agitated about the current situation to do so.

The fact that nobody bought into the whole proposition doesn’t mean they’re rejecting both of those conditions.

What should Sabean have done this offseason to improve the offense?

Manny is going to miss half the season and is riddled with steroid-related media. No thanks.

Orlando Hudson/Rafael Furcal? An improvements over Renteria, maybe if healthy, but not much.

Russel Branyan would have been nice, but who really saw that coming?

The thing is, it’s easy to complain about what Sabean did or didn’t do. The team sucks, so we naturally think it’s because of a move he did or didn’t make. But really, the free agent market sucked, and in order to get an impact bat, a player like Cain would have had to been traded. After that, the player would probably not live up to expectations because of the crappy team around him, and then we’d all be pissed off at Sabean for making a move. It’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation. I, for one, am glad that Sabean did not make any rash moves. It will help weed out who will be possible positional players for when (a) the good prospects are ready to join the big club, and (b) when a good free agent might actually be available.

Be patient is all I can really say in the end.

Not sure Sabes has made too many short-sighted trades recently. The most recent short-sighted trade I can think of is Accardo for Hillenbrand and Chulk. Dumb trade made on 7/22/2006. After that, I can’t think of any particularly impactful trades that have been all that short-sighted.

Personally, I thought Sabean’s been making a lot more moves recently with an eye towards the future.

Fun fact

Ishikawa’s OPS+ is now 75; Hillenbrand’s OPS+ as a Giant was 74.

So, we traded for a first baseman who ended up being worse than a guy who we got for free and are still complaining about. (And that’s just at the plate, not taking into account Ishikawa’s far superior defense.)

he could have waited awhile before signing Renteria and got a better deal. Or he could have signed Hudson and just moved Burriss to SS. That would have saved some money.

Other than that, I really can’t complain too much about what he did. The market wasn’t that great and the team is severely limited by the Zito and Rowand contracts and its budget (approx. $90M.) The consensus seems to be that those are Magowan’s fault, but Sabes has to take some blame for them. It isn’t as if Magowan told Sabean to overpay by millions.

But I basically agree with you. Those contracts will be with the team for awhile. In the meantime, the stated strategy of the team is to go with youth and sign vets to short term deals as stop-gap measures until the kids arrive. If that’s the plan, then you really can’t complain about the job Sabean is doing. He didn’t make any hasty decision or god-awful trades/signings, which is good. If he is truly building the team for the long run, which is supposedly what a lot of people want, then he really isn’t too bad a job.

My problem with this line of thinking:

If folks are saying Sabes had a decent-to-good off-season because he didn’t handicap future seasons, then folks are also saying that it’s possible to wreck future offseasons by what you do now (or what you’ve done recently).

There are some here, myself included, who believe that Sabe’s ability to acquire a MotA bat is the result of his poor off-seasons in the recent past. Cabrera & Teixeirieaieaieia are names that we might have made a bigger push for, if we hadn’t signed Zito, et c., especially considering that those guys play positions the Giants have the most trouble filling.

I just didn’t assume I’d need to include the disclaimer that we’re obviously not talking about the comic books, since that’s an entirely different medium for storytelling than what appears onscreen, regardless of it being the source material.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

Sure, the F4 and Incredibles have similar powers. They have completely different stories though. And it’s not like Pixar is the first company ever to repackage an idea. That’s more or less 90% of all movies to come out since the first movies were created.

by Natto on May 28, 2009 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t even know if it’s really a repackaging so much as that the powers that have been used in comics are there for a reason. It’s a little base to say it because it’s supposed to speak for itself, but they stand for things.

Mr. Incredible has physical strength because he’s struggling with his emotional strength. Elastigirl is stretchy because she’s stretching herself thin trying to keep the family from breaking apart. Violet has invisibility because she’s a shy teenager who doesn’t have confidence and doesn’t want to be seen. Dash goes really fast because he’s an off-the-wall preadolescent who doesn’t want to be harnessed.

The powers are designed to fit the people. The fact that we’ve seen some of them before is just a testament to the fact that we’ve seen art that struggles with the same themes this movie does.

Except that the powers were designed to fit the people in Fantastic Four, too, and in pretty much the same way (in the movie, at least, I don’t read comics). Mr. Fantastic is trying to keep them all together, Invisible Woman thinks nobody listens to her, the Humen Torch is hot-headed, etc.

You know why the family from the Incredibles has similar powers to the Fantastic four? Because the Incredibles isn’t about the superpowers. They just needed some to be superheroes.

No, I think they should have had powers that we’ve never seen before ever. Mr. Incredible should have had the power to shoot anti-matter squid legs out of his eyes while rowing a boat that is also the word. Elastigirl should have had the power to write people’s minds! Violet should have had the power weave whataver loose strands of hair were abandoned within a 10 mile radius into weapons that she could subsequently use to fashion weapons that would be invulnerable to attack. And Dash should have had the power to not be such a brat.

Sometimes when we see things that we’ve seen before it’s because they’re good and when we don’t see things that we haven’t seen before it’s because we would have seen them already if they were any good.

Don’t get me wrong. I love the Incredibles. It’s like this all the other great Pixar films have something about them that is outside the formula. Something a bit different. The Incredibles is a very well made super hero film but is basically just a superhero film. It has the family aspect but that isn’t much different from other films either.

I don’t feel I am expressing myself very well. What I am trying to say is that I don’t feel it is on the same level as the other films because it is a pretty normal type of film. It takes place in our world…not in the future, not in the world of toys, not in a monsters world, not in a bugs world, not in a world inhabited by cars (though this is definitely not one of their better efforts)…it’s just a bunch of superheros fighting in our world. Make sense?

by positiveuphemism on May 28, 2009 12:27 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I always saw The Incredibles as a story about a family who happens to be superheroes.

by Natto on May 28, 2009 12:28 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see what you’re saying on a fairly topical level…. I mean, no, these people aren’t bugs or robots or toys… but that’s about as far as I can take the idea.

I think Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl were superheros, but they’re not really anymore. Now they’re spouses, parents, citizens, and office workers. Mr. Incredible fancies himself as the man he was, and pines for the experience of his youth. Elastigirl is very grounded in the present and wants to make the most of the lives they have no. The children have no idea what it means to be able to embrace their powers, and Violet’s confidence is crippled by it while Dash grows more and more defiant about it.

The only character who really remains unchanged from the past, who really sticks to a traditional mold throughout his story arc, is Syndrome. Still obsessed with Mr. Incredible. Still building his little toys. Still doing everything for all the same reasons that he was doing them when he was a child. And his inability to stand for anything outside of an isolated event from when he was 12 is what makes him villainous. The actual heroes end up acting heroically because their lives have changed – because they’re not heroes anymore.

I think in a traditional mold you don’t really see that. Bruce Wayne is always fighting his battles because his parents were killed. Clark Kent is always defending humanity because, well, his father kind of told him to. Peter Parker is always … well, we get the picture.

I could talk forever about The Incedibles. I probably shouldn’t, though.

I appreciate the Incredibles because of the depth of storytelling. It’s very adult in the issues it tackles; the ones you mentioned, plus the trials that their lives as superheroes and ordinary people puts on the marriage of Bob and Helen. Helen seriously begins to doubt her husband’s loyalty and fidelity, and even before that there’s a rift between them when Bob can’t get away from the past and she already has. I appreciate that the story was more than the BANG POW ZAP and bright colors of an animated action film.

I don't understand the Bochy hate...

how much impact do you guys think a manager actually has on the game? Some, certainly, but he’s NOT the reason our offense doesn’t score. Managers mainly handle playing time and bulpen use.

Yes, arguments can be made about his PT use (to a small degree) but his bullpen use is fine in my opinion. It helps that Affeldt-Howry-Wilson is pretty much established from the beginning, but I see no fault in how he manages the pen (not a big one at least).

I do agree Sabean needs to go, the drafts are John Barr, not Sabean, and I think a lot of our talent is overrated anyway, outside of Alderson, Bumgarner, Posey, and Crawford.

Sabean has just proven time and time again he is now shrewd at putting together a big league team or analyzing the market. (Renteria, Affeldt, Howry, Johnson proved to ALL be grossly overpaid). I had no problems with any of those signings initially, but that was because I was expecting a normal market, like Sabean, and was wrong. The difference is, it’s not my job to predict FA market prices. For that same money, we could have potentially had Dunn, Orlando Cabrera, Affeldt and Brad Penny (or even Unit at a lower rate).

Would that make us a playoff team? No, but we’d certainly be better

there have been a number of times

where he has made dumb moves that certainly could have impacted the game had he done differently.

I think back to a game a few weeks back, when Howry came in to pitch relief. He pitched two or three outs, and then in the top of the inning, Bochylet him bat, and he did a pathetic bunt that got the 1B runner out. The next inning, he faced one batter and then Bochy yanked him. There have been a number of times where he leaves in someone too long and then a reliever has to come in with multiple runners on board.

Plus, when you have better players on the bench, starting Aurilia, Velez, & Uribe constitutes stupidity and could reasonably affect the game.

American track star Lacey O’Neal coined the term girlcott in the context of the protests by male African American athletes during the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. Speaking for Black women athletes, she advised that the group would not “girlcott” the Olympic Games as they were still focused on being recognized. “Girlcott” appeared in Time magazine in 1970, and then later was used by retired tennis player Billie Jean King in The Times in reference to Wimbledon to emphasize her argument regarding equal pay for women players.

What’s so bad about being a Giants fan? We’re not winning – so what? It’s not like we’re stuck being Marlins fans with an owner who sees revenue sharing as profit! and trades anyone even halfway decent before they hit arb or the Pirates who drafted a mediocre middle reliever ahead of Wieters. Hell, we’re not even the Padres, who play in a new ballpark that is only 1/3 full every game two blocks from a big patch of dirt that should be the city’s main public library, but won’t be anytime soon because Petco has helped nearly bankrupt the city. Bochy’s maddening, Sabean sucks, yeah yeah but it’s still exciting when Winn hits one into triples alley or Cain puts together a game that makes everyone think ‘hey, he’s breaking out!’

We have one of the best farms in the majors, defending NL Cy Young on the hill every five days, have been in the World Series this decade and have a beautiful ballpark that wasn’t paid for with municipal funds. Winning the World Series will be awesome, but I’d bet if the Giants won, had a fire sale and stocked the team with Edgardo Alfonsos (a la recent Marlins clubs), made sleazy business deals, etc. you would be just as pissed as you likely are now.

maybe

but i’m way smarter than a red/white sox fan. could one step away from the game to do some basking and then return a few years later?? lets do that.

On 5/7, the best part of waking is up LOLDGERS in my cup.

I disagree. At least for me.

I’ll use the niners as an example because I feel a great number of us here are fans. I have seen them win 5 times. Even though it has been 15 years I don’t really mind them not winning. I want to see them win but it doesn’t feel crucial.

Of course my love for football pales in comparison to baseball. Nevertheless, once we do win a World Series I am confident that a great weight will be lifted from all of us. And once this comes to pass our tolerance will go way up and the defeats of the past will fade away.

An analogy could be made of falling in love. You might have your heart broken a few times but once you do find love, the pain of the past becomes a memory.

I don’t get this weird sense that if the Giants win once it’ll fulfill some great gaping hole that will allow fans to forever more put up with future mediocre performances… just so long as they win it once.

The fun of being a fan of baseball is the idea that we invest in six months/162 games because we want to win the World Series every year. Not once in a lifetime – every year. Look at what winning did to Red Sox fans. The first time was a miracle and many said they’d never complain about their team again… until they fell short in 2006 and then it was back to ‘woe is me.’ They win in 2007 and now every season is epic fail if they don’t win the WS. And even with the ringzzz, ask a true lifetime Red Sox fan about Bucky @#$^ing Dent or Buckner and they’ll still grimace and bitch.

Wrong. The Red Sox fans i know don’t care about Dent or Buckner anymore because of 2004 and 2007. Though the idiots who wouldn’t know the difference between David Ortiz and Josh Beckett are the ones who whine.

I always boycott life when it goes to shit, so why not? I never apologize first when my wife and I fight. I just don’t go into work if it gets too stressful. Yipee! Boycotts! Can trade in my parents too?

In a way Neukom reminds me of an administrator I had the displeasure to endure once. For an entire school year she just sorta sat back and took notes, saw what the ebb and flow of the department was and then the next year she made sweeping changes that we are still trying to recover from. I haven’t seen or heard much from him so far, maybe at the end of the season he will make some major changes; however I’m hoping in this case the sweeping changes will be made on logic and reason, not on trying to bolster your resume with sleight of hand shenanigans.

IAWTC

And I agree with Neukom’s strategy (if that’s what it is). At the end of the year he should know which people are pulling their weight.

I went shopping at my favorite thrift store today and bought a 2002 World Series Giants shirt that says CRUSH THE MONKEY. Must be some crazy-ass misprint since they had to cancel 2002 season…

I guess they canceled the 1962 and 1989 season, too, huh?? So it’s been 55 years since they were last in the World Series?

Little help

Here’s a link to a website you might enjoy, since it’s about the Red Sox:

I can’t imagine too many Sox fans are going to get much out of a board about the Giants. So… Enjoy!

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

If the giants win, I feel good about it. If the giants lose, it gives me something to constructively complain about. Its a no lose-lose situation.
