Around SBN: NHL Trade Rumors: Do You Make A Move For Rick Nash?

K-Law posted his first mock draft. I'm not going to spoil too much, as it is premium content and I'll respect a writer putting it behind access, but some interesting tidbits:

• He's got the Giants are picking someone not surprising
• He's got someone taken at #4 who isn't even in our community draft choice list at #4.
• One of our recently heavily discussed players isn't taken until the end of the first around. The other truly heavily discussed player...isn't even in the first round. And neither are who you think.

Overall, a very informative piece, not just on the Giants but on all the teams. If you're going to take a serious look at who might actually go where, K-Law's is one of the three mock drafts I'd suggest reading (along with BA and MiLB.com).

I’d be happy with who he has us taking there. Very happy. :)

Interesting with the Pirates maybe going for an overdraft to save money to try and get Angel Sano….that would suck for them if he signed with someone else and the guy they overdraft isn’t very good. I thought the Pirates were done with signability picks?

Question:

How accurate was KLaw been in previous season mock drafts?

You think the MiLB mock is one of the ones to read?

I’d go with Seiler over the MiLB one. Mayo can very, very odd and idiosyncratic at times (though he’s certainly worth a read).

Adoptive Parent of Francisco Peguero. He can throw, he can run, he can hit(fastballs), and he's Dominican. What else do you need to know?

btw, you can find Seiler’s draft page at http://mlbbonusbaby.wordpress.com/

I’d be happy if we went in that direction with our pick and it’s probably who i’d take at this moment. I doubt the Pirates will pull of a surprise like that, they seem to be commited to spending money in development & whilst they may not go with a high demand player i’d imagine they still go with one who’s expected in the top 10.

It’s not that surprising to see Tate slip off the board as he could well slide due to bonus demands. I think it depends on whether someone at the top end wants him as if they don’t he could slide quite far.

He’s got someone taken at #4 who isn’t even in our community draft choice list at #4.

And I was just pondering whether the Pirates would go off the board with their pick. I must be some kind of genius!

…or I left someone obvious off the list by mistake.

He didn’t have Tate going in the first?

Would hate to cripple the ESPN empire by revealing a name in a mock MLB draft.

by AngelWillSaveUs on May 27, 2009 4:23 PM PDT reply actions

As a writer who also relies on that income...

…I disagree.

Just because they are an empire does not mean that promoting the idea is good. Because the empire may not die off, but the small-time writers, working for a few dozen subscribers with a focus, will be hurt, because most people won’t make a distinction.

I’m sure this will come back with people who say they buy what they download for free, but after watching a talented musician friend stop trying after he put a non-malicious worm into a song file, and found that it had been responding from over 5,000 computers but he had received less than a dozen purchases of his music online, I’m afraid I don’t have much faith in people.

I don't disagree with you.

But I’m not sure I completely agree, either. The music part I do agree with more, as their work is original, while ESPN and Keith Law rely on their greater means to be able to go out and see people as an excuse to make people pay for it. If they made that platform completely funded by advertising sales, there’s a great chance it could equalize it. SBNation makes a good amount of money that way. But because ESPN has the original means to send someone out there to scout or talk to industry insiders, we are forced to pay. I disagree with their philosophy in that way, as that information could easily be free if someone went out and got it, since a player’s actions are public. Writers such as Keith Law, while they might have some original insights, are not working with completely original material. Law doesn’t need to go find who this person named Strasburg is to know that he’s the best draft prospect this year. It’s more of the same that allows ESPN to force people to pay to find out how a player did and how good he is. And that’s no criticism of Law. I’m sure if you asked him whether he’d prefer his info to be free or paid, he’d probably say free, providing that his paycheck is the same. Places like ESPN and BA will realize within the next decade that proving free information is the most powerful economic tool out there for bringing in advertisers, and I’m guessing that with a slow, steady transition to that format, the company could be more profitable in the long-run. With blogs and such gaining so much popularity, people are offering the same sort of information completely for free, and once that reaches something like the MLB Draft, BA and ESPN will have to change or be left behind. Newspapers are figuring this out the hard way. The pay wall sites will be next. It’s pretty much a certainty.

That being said, yeah, don’t break laws copying things that should be paid for. If they want to protect their information with a pay wall, so be it. I prefer to pay for it until better free stuff comes along, and at that point I’ll write a nice letter saying that their service is obsolete. Even if those sites want to collect money, it’d be a great thing if they went to a donation format. Numerous people that write independently do that, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a core group of scouting personnel do that in a collaborative site somewhat soon. Complaining about a pay wall doesn’t do any good, but finding alternative means to collect that same information independently and publishing it for free is powerful.
