minor lines, 5/26/09
Limited action today with both Fresno and Connecticut rained out while San Jose had a scheduled-off day. Augusta did have a double-header. The highlight there would be (a) the young Aaron King having perhaps his best start of the season and combining with two relievers for a shutout. On the hitting side, (b) both catchers, Matt Klimas and Johnny Monell, each had a hit and a walk in three plate appearances.
AAA: Fresno at Omaha postponed by rain
(with a makeup doublerheader scheduled for tomorrow)
AA: Connecticut at Binghamton postponed by rain
(with a makeup doubleheader scheduled for June 6)
A+: San Jose had a scheduled off-day
(Their next schedule off-day is June 8.)

A-: Augusta lost to Asheville 2-1 (7 innings) in game 1
Augusta: DH Andy D'Alessio: 1 for 3, 2B
Augusta: C Matt Klimas: 1 for 2, BB, SO
Augusta: RHP Chance Corgan: 5.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
Augusta: RHP Justin Fitzgerald: 2.0 IP, 1 BB, 3 K
The only GreenJacket to reach base twice, Klimas had one of the GreenJackets' four hits and one of their two walks. D'Alessio had his 5th XBH in 89 AB this season. A year ago he had 49 XBH in 459 AB.
Making his third start among eight appearances, Corgan allowed a season-high 7 H. He now has a .304 BAA against as a starter after his BAA was just .200 in five relief appearance. Fitzgerald, the Giants' 11th round selection a year ago, struck out three of the seven batters he faced. Through fourteen relief appearances, he now has peripheral stats of 20 H, 9 BB, and 28 K in 23.0 IP to go along with his 2.74 ERA.
A-: Augusta defeated Asheville 2-0 (7 innings) in game 2
Augusta: C Johnny Monell: 1 for 2, 2B, BB
Augusta: 2B Wladimir Frias: 2 for 3, SB
Augusta: LHP Aaron King: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Augusta: RHP Erick Stolp: 1.2 IP, 1 K
Augusta: LHP Dan Runzler: 1.0 IP, 1 BB, 2 K
Monell and Frias both reached base twice in just three plate appearances. In May, Monell now has an .899 OPS in 38 AB after just a .656 OPS in 47 AB in April. Frias had two hits after going 1 for 22 in his first five Sally League games.
Making his seventh start, the 18-year-old King had a season-high 4 K in his second longest start of the year. It was his first start of the year without allowing an earned run. Unfortunately, his ERA remains above 5.25 and his BAA above .300, while his K/BB ratio is below 2.00.

Aaron King's age?
I thought he was 20?

age correction
My math is suspect. Aaron King is 20 years old, not 18.

Rating the GreenJackets as prospects
I’ll kick off some comments. With Augusta being the only team in action, perhaps this is a good time to kick off discussion of who their top prospects are. There are five members of their roster who made BA’s top 30 prospects list for the Giants: #6 Ehire Adrianza, #12 Wendell Fairley, #21 Aaron King, #22 Francisco Peguero, and #27 Charlie Culberson. I don’t think you can describe any of them as having good seasons so far, although there may be mitigating factors (Peguero on the DL; Adrianza, King, and Culberson still being fairly young). How would this community rank the Augusta prospects now? I know that Juan Perez has been a fan favorite here, but does he have enough bat if the infield experiment is over or does not work out? Do any of the pitchers stand out? Matt Klimas was drafted earlier than most of the other hitters. Is anyone willing to get on his bandwagon?

GreenJackets
Surkamp and King have received praised from community list. Brute spoke highly of Runzler however he is 24yrs old and still in low A ball. Adrianza seems to be handling his own at 19yrs of age,
Where is Jason Jarvis or Hector Correa?

Correa is still in extended spring trainin. Jarvis is still listed with Salem-Keizer, his team last year. I’d venture a guess that he’s with Correa at EST.

The three guys I like the most are Juan Perez, Aaron King, and Eric Surkamp. Surkamp is interesting, he has great K and BB rates, but he’s getting hit around a bit. I know he doesn’t have great stuff, so I wonder if he’ll always just be hittable (instead of it just being some bad luck).

I like how there were mitigating factors for everyone there… but Fairley.
lol Fairley.

They’re judging him unfairley.

Fairley suffered a shoulder injury early in the season...
…though he was insisting he was over it about a month ago.

Is Frias’s first name really spelled “Wladimir?” The Augusta Greenjackets website says “Vladimir.”

Yeah, you’re right. It’s Vladimir. I confused the first name with the Mariners’ Balentien, or at least I think I did. I admit that I am having a hard time keeping straight who is Kelvim and who is Kelvin. Add some other names to the list that I am likely to confuse.

Long-term, I like Adrianza and Peguero. As for pitchers, Runzler, Fitzgerald, Ronick, Corgan, Nicholson, and Surkamp are all intriguing. Other than Runzler, all are pretty far away, though.

Scouting Report on King?
Does anyone know if he’s still got that disgusting motion?
by dogdays on May 27, 2009 9:22 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Define disgusting
I saw him VERY briefly in the rained out game. Very high kick, 3/4’s arm motion, a bit of a high scap load. But nothing too crazy. I was unable to get velocity readings or a good read on his stuff, as I was doing photos at that point. (I usually wait until 3rd or later innings to watch pitches to get motion, as many minor league starters won’t start throwing their full arsenal until then).

I saw video of his motion from Community College
but as I recall it was an odd motion with Zero follow through. It was as if he hucked the ball and then instead of following through he just stood straight up. That’s a lot of strain on the arm to throw a ball as hard as you can and then just stop your arm without much of a follow through.
Also he seemed to whip his arm from an awkward postion… Elbow seemed really high just before he made the final move forward to his release point (this may be the scap loading, I don’t know the tech terms)

Crucial series this week for the little Giants. They’re in Visalia for four games. The Rawhide is two games up on the Giants and the Nuts in the division. Visalia has been slumping a bit, and the Giants just took three of four from the Nuts to pull into a tie for second. If the Giants take three of four from the Rawhide that would be very good. Stockton comes to town after that. Even as Stockton is not great, they’ve been playing better lately. The time is basically now, gentlemen.
Also I’m thinking of June 3 for a SJ Giants game as it is my birthday and one of the few days I have off. Perhaps others can come too.
