After Sanchez...whats next

Whether it happens in May or in July it seems like good ol' dirty sanchez will be traded for a bat playing 2b,1b, LF or hopefully someone that can play all three at the same time.

My question is who is coming up to replace Sanchez in the rotation?  Will it be a top prospect in AA, a solid young pitcher in AAA, a former prospect, or a free agent?

Personnally i wouldnt mind a flyer on a Free Agent like Byrd, who wont blow anyone away with stuff but also wont derail Pucetas/Sosa but i realize that having Johnson/Byrd in the same rotation is living dangerous so i am going with Pucetas.

Poll seriously needs a Sadler option

Not saying Sadler is lock but if trying to establish (or reestablish) a pitcher why not go with the guy that, if things half arse work, would be team controlled for a bit and thus have some value?

Almost everybody and his brother will be after Sheets if he is healthy enough to pitch from August on. It could be one of the most amusing contract negotiations I’ve seen in a long time.

I mean imagine him on the ‘Bums, Phillies, Cubs or Cards. Let alone the M’s, A’s Tigers or KC ( nice pitching yards that could still be in the race).Changes the look of the whole pennant race without trading a prospect. That is assuming no one in the ESPN Division AL East feels they are close and need a starter. A healthy Sheets just as too much potential for someone to not make a fool of themselves.

I’d think the logical first chance would go to either Martinez or Pucetas. It’s possible that they could give one of the young guns in AA a shot as well. Of course it depends on how well the team & individual pitchers are doing at the time.

Alderson pitch when he was in A ball. If he progresses, he could be moved up to the rotation like Timmy was at the end of the season a couple years ago. If this will hurt his development, Im against it, but if he is ready, it will be him.

I don’t think even the Giants would hold back Lincecum just because they thought the 2007 model of Russ Ortiz was going to be so awesome. I’m sure they had other reasons for starting him in the minors.

I think the fact that Lincecum went 4-0 in 5 starts at Fresno with a .742 WHIP and 46 Ks in 31 innings may have convinced them that there wasn’t much more for him to learn from pitching in the PCL.

I wouldn’t move anyone, and let some of these kids gel in the majors. Maybe we have a team loaded with second half players. If only some of these guys would take a walk. Giants will average almost one runner or even more per game less than most teams simply because they refuse to take a walk. They will work a 3-1 count, and then swing at garbage to make an out. Why even bother to work the count 3-1 if your going to swing at the pitchers pitch.

Alderson

I would like to see them bring up Alderson before Bumgarner. He’s older, a year more experience, and thus less likely than MadBum to freak out at the call up.

None of those AAA retreads look appealing to me as an option.

On a larger note, I would not be surprised at all to see Cain get traded for a bat before Sanchez. He would bring more in return than Sanchez and would free up more salary room. They could pick up Hardy from the Brewers to play 2b or 3b or a guy like Robinson Cano from the Yankees for him. Problem is that there arent very many 2B/3B guys with pop that will be available.

Really you want cano or hardy for cain? How is that going to free up salary? Those players are arb eligable, Hardy makes 4.65 million and Cano is on a 4yr 30 million contract that pays him 6 mil this year, Matt is on a 4 yr 9 million dollar contract, with the most coming on the team option of 6 mil. This year is making 2.25 mil. Maybe I am stupid but getting either hardy or cano is not saving money.

Brewers need a pitcher, Escobar appears ready

There is a lot of talk in Milwaukee about the Brewers dealing for Cain or even Peavy. And the main player that makes sense in either trade is JJ Hardy. Yunel Escobar is hitting about .280 in AAA and putting up the outstanding defense that they expect from him.

Brewer offense will only go as far as Braun and Fielder will take it. Hardy, although not expendable, can be dealt and not damange the team all that much. Imho, he is destined for 2b in the future, he is an average to below average SS and his power will diminish over time.

If a Cain for Hardy deal were to materialize, the Brewers would have to throw in a prospect as well to even things out.

And yes, I meant Sanchez is cheaper than Cain. Less Payroll in a move involvind Cain and more in return in a deal involving Cain.

by backtocali on May 27, 2009 9:42 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yunel Escobar plays for Braves.

While I like JJ Hardy (below average defensive SS, my ass), we clearly need an upgrade at corner position more. Can we officially stop with the CAIN 4 HARDY nonsense we’ve been hearing for a year now.
