Community Mock Draft
Over the offseason, the Community Prospect Ranking was a lot of fun, so I was thinking it might be fun to do something similar for the forthcoming draft. The people being ranked here are guys we know a lot less about than the Giants' own minor league players, but still, I'd be interested in what people have to say. I figure it could be interesting at least to the point where the Giants make their pick, and maybe through the first ten or so. Hell, maybe we'll even go nuts and do the whole first round. If nothing else, it's a good chance to learn more names and the arguments for and against the various players available.
We can skip the #1 pick, since the Nationals have already said they're taking Strasburg. So, we start with the Seattle Mariners at #2.
Here are mlb.com scouting reports for the players I've put on the poll:
Dustin Ackley OF/1B, University of North Carolina
Aaron Crow RHP, Fort Worth Cats
Kentrail Davis OF, University of Tennessee
Kyle Gibson RHP, University of Missouri
Mychal Givens SS, Jefferson High School (Florida)
Grant Green SS, University of Southern California
Tyler Matzek LHP, Capistrano Valley High School (California)
Matt Purke RHP, Klein High School (Texas)
Tanner Scheppers RHP, Saint Paul Saints
Donavon Tate OF, Cartersville High School (Georgia)
Zach Wheeler RHP, East Paulding High School (Georgia)
Inexplicably, mlb.com doesn't have a scouting report for Aaron Crow, so I linked to the first one that came up on Google. It's old, though.
I've thrown out a bunch of guys, but I'm sure there are many I'm overlooking, so I'm including a Write-In Vote option as well.
Oh, and if we do continue these, someone else should take over putting the polls together. I just don't know that much about who's available.

Dustin Ackley or Aaron Crow
Dustin Ackley is solidifying himself as the best bat available in this draft and Aaron Crow is a very good pitching prospect who can rise rapidly thru a system.

Here is the link for Aaron Crow using the same MLB scouting reports. It is from the year 2008.

Hmm. That has Crow throwing up to 96 MPH. Other reports I’ve seen say more like 92.

Here is a link for a scouting report on prospects with Aaron Crow #2.
Here is another link that has Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik in attencance at a recent Crow start. SF GM Brian Sabean was also in attendance.

I don’t doubt he’s a fine prospect – I’d be happy if the Giants got him for sure. I just wonder who’s right about his velocity.

Ackley seems to be helping himself a lot this spring. He’s finally playing some outfield and even though I can’t recall any specific comments, it at least doesn’t seem as if he’s been terrible. Best bat, defensive flexibility, team that badly needs offense. Seattle has to be picking Ackley.

I voted for Ackley, too – he looks like the best hitter available, which is a major need for Seattle, and the type of hitter he is sounds like it would play well at Safeco.

Which is too bad, by the way. Assuming he can play CF, he seems like he’d be a good fit for the Giants, too.

Ackley. Plus, we all know if they drafted a starter they’d just move him to long relief.

Ackley, without a doubt. He’s really solidified himself as the second-best prospect in the draft.

Aside from the actual question
Would people like to carry this one for at least a few more picks? There hasn’t been as much activity as I’d hoped, but it’s a Saturday afternoon and a holiday weekend, so that probably doesn’t help.

Some people have a life outside the basement. Carry out to at least #6.

I like Ackley here. The more I watch and study Tate I think I like him for #6. Don’t know though.

I'm learning towards Tate also
He has the highest potential out of any position player in the draft. He should also be available when we pick. I know SD likes him but I really doubt they have the cash to get him, especially if the peavy trade doesn’t go through.

I like what I’ve read of Tate too. I’m a bit skeptical of the Giants’ ability to develop him, but hitters are definitely faring better in the system lately, and he has the potential to be a star. If the best couple of sub-Strasburg pitchers are gone by #6, he sounds like a good pick.

I would not be outraged if the Giants picked him, but I wouldnt be ecstatic either

1. Strasburg
2. Ackley
3. Crow
4. Matzek
5. Green
Then it is either between Tate, Scheppers, and Gibson. Im no expert, but based off reports and scouting, these are the guys I would like

With the new ownership in SD, the Pads need a home run of a draft pick or the front office will be stoned by the fans almost immediate thereafter. I think they’re taking the best arm available, since the position player route has been the road to ruin.
If we end up with Ackley, Tate or Green, I’ll have zero complaints. I like this X-Mas in June stuff.

Believe the Padres would like:
1, Trade Peavy (saving money and restocking the farm)
2. Attempt to take the savings and sign Adrian Gonzalez to long-term deal
3. With Peavy savings select Donavan Tate

Most fans have no idea who any of these guys are. I doubt a draft pick would cause the front office to get “stoned.”

Strasburg-mania has made the fans in San Diego care a bit more about the draft than in recent years.

If the Mariners aren’t smart enough to draft Ackley at #2, then they are the team we should target in trade talks. Now with Littlefield gone, we’ve got find some GM to take advantage of.
