Sweeping Changes, Yes We Can Style
After last night's game, I'm thinking it's safe to assume that most of us here wouldn't mind seeing the nuclear option employed. Since we can't fire our entire lineup, just fire everyone at the top. Here's my new leadership dream team:
GM: Bobby Evans - seems to be in the mold of the new breed GMs that we desperately need
Manager: Steve Decker - winner and can match gamerness with anyone
Bench Coach: Len Sakata - I have nothing to base this on, but seems like the perfect #2 guy
Pitching Coach, Bullpen Coach: Trevor Wilson & Jeff Brantley - If memory serves me right, they had bulldog mentality. Or was it just Trevor's gritting overbite I'm thinking of?
Hitting Coach: The Thrill - who the f&#^(@# else to light a fire?
1B Coach: J.T. - Good times.
3B Coach: Matt Williams - Good times
What's your dream team?

Most of those seem good, not sure about Brantley though.

Not this again!! I thought this post would be about changing the actual shit we have on the field, not the front office and coaches. I’ll sit this one out while everyone talks about Kim Ng.

My dream team involves a lot of different players. We can replace the coaches too, but that strikes me as more of a deck-chairs kind of thing.

What are the realistic expectations for Sabochy?
While the thought of not renewing Sabean and Bochy give me hope and excitement for the future, what are the realistic expectations on what will happen with them? Should I keep my expectations low and assume they’re coming back, so that I can get excited when they don’t? Or should I hope that they’re not coming back, only to be devastated if they do return?
Please Advise.

- Bochy needs to assemble a lineup that gives this powerless bunch a chance to put 1-2 runners on a side. If it means 1-2 quick side for the other slots then so be it.
- Bochy needs to stop making decions that assume a power hitter is going to mysteriously appear and hit a 1-2 run shot in the last 4 innings and save ( or add to ) the lead.
- Bochy need to stop wasting P.A.s and vets either are not producing or doing dumb things. He treats "the kids" that way but the vet always get a pass. Imagine if Lewis or Panda had stared a double into single in SD. You think they would be batting in the same slot the next day?
The let the itcher hit in teh 5-7 than pull him 1-2 hitters into the next side is assnine as well as his Lefty/Righty maddness but I am not goign to ask for the moon here.
He does those 3 bulletted things and not beat the crap out Tim or Cains arms I can handle him and even back him.

Out of curiosity, what kinds of decisions does he make that assume a power hitter is gonna hit a home run in the last 4 innings?

If Bochy is not managing like he is going to get another run why is he so free with Johnson getting 3 extra batters? The tie run is only 3 bases away and the runner has decent speed. The Run Expectancy is at 57.3%. Once Johnson walks Johjima it is runners at 1st & 2nd with one out the Run Expectancy is now up 97.1%.
A large jump but Big head is not worried yet. Leaves Johnson in who then give up a sinlge to Lopez. Game is now tie. Runners at 1st & 2nd with 1 out. Run Expectancy is still at 97.1%. Big Head is still not worried. Leaves Johnson in. How is Big Head not worried unless he plans on the Giants scoring again?
If Big Head plans on the Giants scoring again ( and he must given the choices he made and treated the 1 run ) how are they going to do it? At point of the game the Giants have 0 BB’s, 1 single & 1 hr. So if a team is getting no one on base just how is it going to score? Long ball is the only answer. And this chain is repeatedly followed.

Bobby Evans. Him?
Bobby’s a great dude, but I have a hard time imagining him as the savior of a GM. I suspect a lot of people would be twice as disappointed in Bobby as they are in Sabean. Very good guy, and he’s good at what he does… But if I were Neukom, I wouldn’t hand him the keys to the franchise.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

Here I thought this was going to be about using the broom in a back and forth, side to side sort of motion; instead of the circular whisking motion we’ve been using lately.

Decker
Absolutely agree that he should be the future manager. The team will play small ball and run at will. Andy Skeels as another coach would be awesome, he’s even more of a hardass than Decker if you can believe.

all the small ball in the world doesn’t counter the old three run homer. I don’t mind Decker as the new manager, but little ball doesn’t win. We either need to go out and get some power hitters, or pray that prospects like Villalona, Crawford, Kieschnick etc. are the real deal and get up here quickly.

In the longer term i agree.
I am at the point now that giving Decker chance with this season sounds like a good idea. We already know Big Head will not change his methods to fit his rescoures and we can’t change the resourses enough to fit his ways so it is " Don’t go away mad, just go away" time.

If we were really trying..
We would have fielded a faster team that could bunt, not strike out, and can score on any grounder/fly out. We are a station to station team with no power, bad combo.

It isn’t small ball. Botchy still makes pitching moves, and double switches, in the 5-7 innings like he expects someone in his line up to hit a 1-2 run shot between then and the end of the game. And will not go into his blatant discarding of OBP. A small ball manger lives and dies with OBP even more then station to station one.

And it’s clearly an attitude he’s instilled in the team, as well. All those pop-ups are a produce of hitters who are collapsing on the back-side as they drive to elevate the ball and hit homers. Not a single hitter on this team should be looking to hit homers, not even Bengie. They should be looking to drive the ball to take advantage of the team’s one offensive asset, speed.

Just to carry on about this I would not be shocked to find out some Lewis’s issues stem from managements "he needs to be more aggressive" campaign. Lewis will never be an HOF candidate but a guy with his speed and a high 300’s OBP under team control is very valuable. If you trade him you should be able to get a nice piece (or maybe 2 it packaged well) from a team that thinks it is contending or has hole in the top of their order. Of course that ship has probably sailed because even if he is not viewed as damaged goods the Giants management has given every indication that they don’t really know what they have so the will be low balled.

This is something that has been bothering me quite a bit lately… the poor plate approach and execution. The Giants are a bad offensive team that gets even worse when trying to be a power hitting club.

The Giants dont play small ball
They just arent good at any style of play. The play “Giants ball”, which consists of not getting on base. And when they rarely DO get on base, they try and find new ways to mess it up.

I have raised this question before, why does nobody feel that Roberto Kelly can’t be our skipper after Bochy?

one bright spot of the organization is the apparent competency of the minor league managers. Kelly’s a good one too. Certainly would be in my dream team as baserunning coach. And he’d be tons better than Botched.

New GM, Manager, and pitching coach
I’d definitely like to see a new GM and new manager. Sabean’s power has been reduced significantly over the past few years, with the likes of Barr and others responsible for the change in organizational philosophy and direction.
Bochy is fine, but I don’t always like the way he handles the starters.
I think Righetti should be replaced as well. I think he is a solid pitching coach, but not a spectacular one in the mold of a Dave Duncan or Rick Honeycutt. I just think some of the Giants pitchers might benefit by someone with a fresh perspective.
by Squire_Boone on May 23, 2009 1:43 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I’ve been known to defend certain aspects of Sabean’s career, that I believe him to be incorrectly blamed for. But I’m also ready for a new GM, I think after this season it might just be time. The minor league system has improved, but our ML roster is a mess, and I’m tired of the don’t-draw-a-walk philosophy, like what Daveinexile is talking about above. I think a new GM sets a new tone. I’d like to see that.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
