Post-Game Recap! Mariners beat Giants

Wow! What a stellar contest! I'm sure glad I saw that game instead of going to the movies, which I certainly did not do.

And how about that ending! Exciting stuff, unless it was boring.

Edit: Oh, man. What a treat to miss that one. I had some of the details wrong, but Randy Johnson pitched well, and the Giants lost 2-1. They'll lose tomorrow by the same score. I can't believe I waited all winter for this.

How do the Giants get their 1 run tomorrow?

I’m guessing there will be a fielding error, followed by a throwing error. Then, Rich Aurilia promptly grounds into a double play…

and a run scores.

Being there

If you think watching or listening to 12 innings of fail was hard, try attending the game. There were tons of Giants fans there (we actually briefly got a “LET’S GO GIANTS” chant going in the top of the 12th when Rowand stole second), and all we got for our travels was three hits. TWO of them from Rowand, who we all wanted to run out of town a week ago.

Seriously, words can’t describe how excrutiating it is to watch this team bat right now. I was actually wishing for Dave Roberts and Brian Bocock in the lineup, because I don’t think we ever had a week of offensive futility like this last season.

Oh, and while Safeco Field is a great park, and Mariners fans are generally extremely friendly and polite, there was one asshat behind me who kept yelling “fatso” at Pablito. And then saying he was going to strike out. And then he did strike out. Gah.

The noise that crowd made during Griffey’s AB in the 9th was one of the loudest things I’ve ever heard. They LOVE the guy. Possibly more than (most) Giants fans loved Bonds. It was something to see. And had I known I’d have to endure another three innings of suck, I would have willed his fly ball a few feet past the warning track and I would have saved all of us some time.

Griffey

I was corrected for saying he was the best player in baseball back in the day, but the point remains. The guy forced a trade because he made it clear he was going to sign elsewhere when his contract expired, and he only came back this year because nobody else wanted him. For the fans to forget about that and take his washed back ass back with open arms is just ridiculous. There’s no describing the stupidity of sports fans. It’s the same mentality that will make fans cheer when a steroid suspended player returns, or when a convicted felon who kills dogs returns and throws a TD pass for your team.

Kevin Frandsen should be the starting second baseman. I don’t care if Franny is 0 for 14, giving him the regular job would relax him and get him going. Manny should be sent to Fresno with Bowker or Matt Downs getting the call. Nate should replace Fred Lewis with Winn moving to left as well. Freddie has been terrible. Andres Torres needs to be called up with Aurilia being DFA’d. Romo has to replace Pat Misch. All before tonight’s game, please. Frandsen CAN hit. You’re going to dismiss what he’s done before because of four games this past week? He hit a decent .269 in his only extended stay in the majors, and power wise, he’s Albert Pujols compared to Manny Burriss. He’s looked pretty good defensively at short so far this year, certainly better than Manny Burriss has looked over there in the past. And if he can play short better than Burriss, why can’t he play second better than him? Burriss has the reputation of being a great defensive second baseman, but he’s hid it well so far this season.

Bruce Bochy continues to shine

also want to mention that our stupid manager has no comprehension of how to play when you are using the DH. He didn’t use the bench the entire game, even though one player after another was having futile atbats. How can you keep sending the light hitting Manny Burriss up there when you have Nate Schierholtz, Travis Ishikawa, and even Juan Freaking Uribe on your bench? Does he know that you’re still allowed to make moves other than pitching changes under AL rules? He’s so quick to hit Aurilia for Travis when the other team brings in a lefty, but he kept sending Aurilia up there against righties, even though Travis clearly has better numbers this year than Aurilia. (not that that’s saying much) Bringing in Travis even improves your defense, so there is absolutely no justification in continuing to send Aurilia up to the plate after the lefty was pulled. He’s a shitty manager, who writes the lineup card and then thinks his work is done other than making obvious pitching changes. He needs to go.

Proud new dad of Edgardo errr Edgar Renteria!!!

I thought this too

by FairweatherFan on May 23, 2009 9:45 AM PDT up reply actions

One ticket.

Granted I’ve not looked at the win probability graphs but this game was lost on the Johnson vs Russell P.A. The Giants’ still had the lead. Johnson was struggling and around 90 pitches. Branyan laid a 10 pitch P.A. on the Johnson. Johnson got the K and Balentine stayed at first but from that point on Johnson was gassed. Of coarse the Big Head gives Johnson 3 more batters to face.

That P.A. holds so many reasons why Bochy needs to go.

1. This is a low scoring club that is in a slump. If your team gets the lead you protect it like your new born child.

2. If Johnson is pulled after Branyan than this team only needs to get 11 outs for a win.

2a. Now that he didn’t protect the lead the ‘pen had to absorb extra innings

3. Now that the tiring Molinia has caught extra frames the fact you let Holm go without a replacement is looking incredibly dumb.

3a. Now we are left with option of moving Panda behind the plate and Uribe to third ( and not so sure this is not adefensive down grade at this point) or just sticking it to Molinia and seeing our clean up hitter not be able to cath up to more fast balls.

4. Just why does the other team have the longest P.A.? I mean seriously this happens so often that I think it is entirely reasonable to blame the manager here. If Big Head was managing the talent he had instead of the talent he wishes for he would be stressing working over a B.O.R. pitcher instead of banking of the line up suddenly providing a power hitter.

Where is my beer & chili dog?

This is like the 4th time Johnson has died after having a tough AB.. Bochy should have figured that out a long time ago.

I have to beleive that he was only out there to try and finish the inning and possibly get a win. Im sure he would be out of there if that wasnt the case

I’l l grant you that point but that point is only more damning of the Big Head. He is suppose to trying to either get wins, or show the younger players how to play the game to get wins. Not have the younger players focus on individual moments of glory.

I 100% agree that he should have been gone after the Branyan K. Records should not affect how a team should play to win.

Yeah, I didn’t get that either. I fell asleep during the 1st inning and woke up during the 9th? I was surprised to hear at that time that Botchy hadn’t used any of his bench players. At this point I think maybe he should be tested for dementia.

by Merope on May 23, 2009 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions

wow that was a reply fail of major proportions….
that was meant as a response to rxmeister’s:

He didn’t use the bench the entire game, even though one player after another was having futile atbats. How can you keep sending the light hitting Manny Burriss up there when you have Nate Schierholtz, Travis Ishikawa, and even Juan Freaking Uribe on your bench? Does he know that you’re still allowed to make moves other than pitching changes under AL rules?

Another thing

it really bugged me that Justin Miller pitched so well and takes the loss, while that fucking incompetent Pat Misch gets charged with 0 runs and a no decision.

I forgot to mention that I was hoping the ball would go out and was disappointed when it hit off the wall. It should have been a walk off grand slammer and Misch would have been charged with three well deserved runs.

That's why

smart baseball fans know that ERA and Win/loss can be fucking retarded stats, especially when evaluating relievers.

I’m glad I was at a birthday party and only saw the first inning. All I have is a happy memory of Aaron Rowand going 1/1 with a HR and the Giants leading 1-0.

Good news

blackout means we don’t have to watch the Giants today!

Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

Me, I’ll be at the Stanford-Oregon State game tonight.

Baseball America sez

C Ryan Ortiz from Oregon State

Not a heck of a lot in terms of top talent.

At this point, our offense just feels hopeless. It looks like they’re all trying to hit a wiffle ball with a 50 lb bat.

Guzman got his first hit.

Matt Cain pitching a complete game, even the Seattle announcers up here were impressed. It makes me wonder if Sabean ,(who is in the neighborhood) is thinking of trading with Seattle, for a bat( Andre Beltre)who is eligible for free agency at the end of the season. He’s only batting .214 for the season, the last thing we need is another batter who is having trouble hitting above .200,Remember that why we got rid of Omar Visquel. Also we would have to depart with some of our young talent It’s also known that Seattle needs pitching. If they covet Sanchez, well good riddance, plus it will stop Bochy from using him as a 5th starter.I sincerely hope they don’t have their eyes on Randy Johnson. Our young talent is going to go thru some growing pains,(on the job training)WE’ll just have to be patient, and keep developing our players.Meanwhile Jesus Guzman got his pee pee wet,you know what comes next!.
