Who TF is This Guy from Nobody's Ever Heard of High School

Sounds like a Giants pick to me.

"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

Scouting report

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/draft/y2009/reports.jsp?content=trout

Doesn’t sound like a #6 pick. Might as well go for Tate, with his higher upside, and try to lure him away from college football. Other sites didn’t even rank Trout in top 100 overall picks, although some had him as the #2 or #3 HS OF prospect. Shades of Tony Torcato?

by baseballjunkie on May 22, 2009 7:47 AM PDT reply actions

I say go for tate, if he declines we pick number 6 next year possibly with some more talent

I don’t really want us to go with Tate but if we’re going down that route then he’d be a much better choice than Trout!

Torcato was actually a third baseman when he was drafted.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that pie > cake, that Bochy is endowed by his creator with certain undeniable traits, that among these are veteran man-love, a gigantic skull, and the pursuit of the double switch.

Tony Torcato cannot play [all positions].

Correct,

but my point was that Torcato was not even ranked in the top 100 pre-draft, was relatively unknown outside of Nor Cal, and was considered a major reach. Of course the Giants had a different draft focus back then (or an utter lack thereof to be more accurate) and Torcato was an obvious signability pick. In fairness to Torcato I don’t think his health ever allowed him to develop as he could have.

by baseballjunkie on May 22, 2009 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, the Giants drafting was terrible then. They also picked Arturo McDowell in the first round that year.

Oh, and who was picked right after Torcato? That’s right, C.C. Sabathia.

That’s a very bizarre list and i’m not sure where he’s got a few of those choices. Minor at 3, Trout at 6 and Jenkins at 10 all seem very high. I can perhaps understand Washington wanting to go cheap with their second pick but there seem to be some large reaches there!

It's not just the unusual name

but the physical similarity, the football mentality, even the eyeblack that evoke memories of Tim Salmon.

A High School pitcher at #6 that most have never heard of I can see happening. Taking a high school position player at #6 that has been below the radar? Not bloody likely. Remember this is front office that lives to not tip its hand yet somehow we are getting name this far in front of the draft. I take this as the authors way of saying " How the freak should I know?"

Thing is, the anon hitter is generally a better bet than the anon pitcher.

In general you are right. To get specific I am just saying that is not the pattern the current management follows.

http://projectprospect.com/article/2009/05/21/lincolns-2009-mlb-draft-board

If you don’t want to read the whole article, this is the last paragraph:

I’m usually a little bit leery of the pop-up guy from the Northeast who seems to come out of nowhere each spring. But I haven’t spoken to anyone who’s seen Mike Trout and not walked away very impressed. He plays the game with Aaron Rowand type intensity, and shows natural instincts and tools that should help him overcome his relative inexperience.

Ummmm… No thanks! I’d be ok with the projected pick of Wheeler at #6 though.

by baseballjunkie on May 22, 2009 10:57 AM PDT reply actions

Aaron Rowand? He of the 5+ years MLB experience yet still has the brain cramps of a rookie to turn a double into a single?

Now that is out of my system for a bit. A team with the cost controlled version Rowand in his first 5 years of his career does have something pretty valuable but man that is the wrong name to be dropping in these parts.

Jonathan Mayo

Always believe in evaluating the source. With that in mind went back to Mayo’s 2008 mock draft and he seemed quite accurate with his mock draft one month ahead of that draft.

GM Brian Sabean Sighting

More Mayo:

From what I was told, there were at least four general managers taking in Crow’s start, during which he threw six shutout innings. In attendance were Jack Zduriencik (Seattle, No. 2 pick), Kevin Towers (San Diego, No. 3), Neal Huntington (Pittsburgh, No. 4) and Brian Sabean (San Francisco, No. 6). Now, just because a GM shows up doesn’t mean a team’s going to take a guy, but I think it’s not a bad call to put Crow firmly in the top 10 somewhere at this point.

Not hungry

Michael Trout? No thanks. The Giants wouldn’t recognize an OF who could hit any more than I could recognize Greek poetry or a fine wine. I mean, I know that stuff exists somewhere, but nothing in my life experience prepares me in any way to understand it or appreciate it unless someone tells me about it.

Kevin Bass? Sure.
Tim Salmon? Absolutely.
Steve Trout? Mmmm, okay, I guess.
Mike Carp? Maybe.
Shad Smith? Maybe not.
Michael Trout in the first round? No freaking way. I’d prefer a nice bowl of Matzek soup.

There’s nobody who’s going to be available who seems all that thrilling, so I doubt I’ll be OMGWTFBBQ about anyone they might happen to pick.

Of course, at this point last year I didn’t think Buster Posey seemed all that thrilling, so what do I know!?

really? What wasn’t there too like about Posey this time of year, last year?

Adoptive Parent of Francisco Peguero. He can throw, he can run, he can hit(fastballs), and he's Dominican. What else do you need to know?

i remember a lot of people here didn't want posey before the draft(including me)

All the scouting reports called him a one year wonder, with marginal power at best. Also his bonus demands didn’t seem worth it, especially with the way Sandoval was destroying SJ at the time. I think Smoak was the consensus favorite here.

by superk1ng on May 23, 2009 1:39 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, looking at the threads posted, that does seem so. However, the major scouting reports (BA, BP, MLB, and others) weren’t much worried that he was a one year wonder (i don’t recall any of those ‘calling’ him that, only slightly worried that he might be at that offensive level).

I didn’t have anything against Posey, I was just head over heels over Smoak and the thought of finally having a power hitting first baseman again after 15+ years.

Trout

Trout is definitely rocketing up the charts as we get closer to the draft. I’m not psyched about Trout but I think the Giants deserve the benefit of the doubt right now.

Many hated the Bumgarner and Alderson pick, many hated the Posey pick (granted everyone wanted Smoak and that would have been okay) – the Giants seem to have their stuff together.

Admittedly I know very little about these players but I think Grant Green has become seriously underrated and would still be my choice.

Just my two cents...

I know people don’t know me on here, but here’s something for you.

The thing about Trout is that he endears himself to every scout in multiple ways. Not only does he succeed on the field, but he’s turned his senior season into a twitter-like event, keeping scouts and evaluators informed of his every move. It’s been a brilliant move by him and his family. He could easily be making $100K plus more with this style of self-promotion in a state that’s had horrible weather, and Trout’s been on the field way too little.

My personal opinion is that he’s a second-round talent in most years. Picking at #6, there’s no way the Giants pick him. I wouldn’t worry one bit. You’re more likely to pick Tim Wheeler from Sac State than Trout if you’re looking at an outfielder. There’s just too much to be left on the board there that the Giants look at a talent that low. Granted, there’s wide fluctuation in how boards seem to be lining up this year, but Trout’s probably not a top ten guy on more than, say, five boards around the league I would guess. People view him as a consolation prize if they don’t get/can’t afford Donavan Tate.
