OT: What Would You Change About Baseball If You Were the Commisioner
Over on THT, Craig Calcaterra takes issue with Rick Reilly for a number of reason's but focuses on his statements regarding what he would do if he were MLB Commisioner. Most of Reilly's ideas are ridiculous and Calcaterra correctly rips him up. It did however bring up an interesting topic for a post: What would you change about baseball if you were the commisioner ?

The AL has a curfew rule that games that go past 2 AM will be postponed, I think that is the most pussy rule in the game.

Strikezone
Would have the umpires call ball and strikes as written in the book. It would enlarge the strikezone as it is called today thus speeding up the game.

Your views intrigue me and I would like to sign up for your news letter.
They will never lose the DH (Yes, I am one of those) so this is the next one on my list!
Then down the list is a 7 game series for every play off series.

I actually agree with that one. The strikezone is too subjective as evidenced by last nights game.

The Giants are given 10 strikes per at-bat, aluminum bats, and 20 outs per inning when on offense.

Maybe if there is legit floor on the owners along with cities getting a large stake in teams when they finance a team’s home yards for them. Otherwise all a cap does is encourage Like the Dorky York’s of the 49ers – no thanks.

Raise the mound back to 15-18 inches as was before 1969. The Giants would get a nice advantage from this. I also agree with Wilriv about enlarging the strikezone. I watch old games from the early 90s and late 80s and that thing was letters to the knees and fairly wide too.

Re: Strikezone
believe the umpires call the game fine on the corners – no need to expand the zone there. It is that it Blue seldoms calls the strike at the letters.

No DH
No more THIS TIME IT COUNTS
Work to get MLB Network carried on more cable/satellite providers as it’s a huge boon to the sport
Similiarly work to restructure mlb.tv and their retarded blackout issues for the same reasons
Restructure the FOX Game of the Week crap. No way in hell should a local fan not be able to see his or her team just because FOX is carrying the game. No.
International draft

I hate international FA rules

Instead of the disorganized international FA stuff which was led to shady dealings lately in the Dominican, especially with Bowden in Washington pocketing money from signing the kids, have the kids declare for a draft. The system is already kind of set up for it, with the July date being the time when 16 year olds can sign out of DR. I can see the academies down there taking a role in organizing the kids to declare for a draft. There are academies that I know if in DR, Venezuela, the Netherlands Antilles (Curacao, Aruba, Bonaire, Sint Maarten), and the Netherlands. So, if the draft were to occur a few days after the July date it would already kind of work in conjunction with the way things are now, just legitimize it.
It’s still a rough idea but I think it can work.

A. 100% revenue sharing or eliminate team territorial regions.
B. Implement unrestricted free agency (and thereby also eliminate arbitration).
C. Eliminate DH.
D. Stop all drug testing, or push drug enforcement on to players association.
E. Accelerate the use of technology to phase out umpires, or at the least mute the variance in umpires.
F. Shorten Season to 154 games.
G. Eliminate All-Star Game.

I would also address the testing, but the MLBPA and the testing and shit is so screwed up that it would be a huge undertaking. I’m not sure it could be done by one commissioner alone.

Directive D. would be almost impossible to implement in the current climate – congress would want to get involved. Ideally, it’s the players who need to police themselves – since they are the one’s directly effected by competitive pressures.
