This could be more descriptive, but I can’t argue with your facts.

watch...

4 HBPs for Rowand tonight. That’s the kind of gritty gamertude a gamer like Rowand-gamer brings to the game. GAMER!

He hit leadoff 11 times in 2007. Dude knows how to get it done.

Don’t be surprised if Rowand swings at the ceremonial first pitch.

Well at least Rowand can’t strand a runner in scoring position in the 1st

Or if he does, we will have scored 4 runs already.

or hit into a double play

by Merope on May 20, 2009 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

all part of the plan

to not hit into a DP in the first inning.

by jctGamer on May 20, 2009 4:34 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Bochy is brilliant. He avoids an early double play by batting Rowand first. And it isn’t likely for Ishi, Burriss or Sanchez to get on base ahead of him, so Rowand’s double plays have been solved.

by chilibean_3 on May 20, 2009 4:34 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I guess if speed at the top of the order isn’t working you might as well go with gamery grit…

whatever

Seriously, has anyone seen my adopted brother?

Bochy's Logic

Well, Aaron Rowand is probably the fourth best option for the leadoff spot, therefore he is the cleanup hitters of leadoff hitters, therefore he will hit dingers in the leadoff spot, therefore he will hit leadoff.

Makes sense to me Boch, do your thing.

On the run from Johnny Law, aint no trip to Cleveland, or San Francisco.

I’m predicting the Padres intentionally walk Jonathan Sanchez to get to Aaron Rowand.

But seriously

Bochy is likely thinking Rowand might get fastballs in the leadoff spot

And we all did laugh yesterday when Velez lead off, and proceeded to get 2 hits….

It's the "everybody plays" approach

Everyone on the roster gets a shot at leadoff this season. Just wait until Bengie’s turn!

If it’s anything like the way my daughter’s t-ball lineup card gets filled out, it just means that Rowand was the first one at the ball park today.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

One step at a time.

by Natto on May 20, 2009 11:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it’s kind of funny that whenever the Giants’ do anything slightly out of the ordinary (like using Pablo as the backup catcher with a multitude of off days, Rowand hitting leadoff, etc.) the hew and cry is amazing. Then, when it all turns out okay, we all just move on and forget about it. Look, I’m not saying Rowand should hit lead off for the rest of the year, but the OBP from the top spot in the lineup has been horrible, and Petco Park has been kryptonite (to the Giants Krypto the superdog lineup) this year. What’s wrong with shaking things up a little? Rowand did well last night, so let it go. Jebus.

by tyrannoman on May 21, 2009 11:28 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It wasn’t horrible with Fred Lewis there.

by Natto on May 21, 2009 11:31 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

true, but Lewis hitting leadoff happened to coincide with his slump. I’d much rather have Fred there than anyone in the lineup, but I also don’t mind his high OBP grinding out long AB’s in the 5 hole (not that he’s hitting there, either.)

by tyrannoman on May 21, 2009 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right now he’s hitting in front of Ishikawa and Burriss. That’s just a complete waste of he’s ability to get on base.

Ugh

His ability. Also, this isn’t true:

Lewis hitting leadoff happened to coincide with his slump

He hit leadoff most of last year, and did a good job.

He did a very good job hitting leadoff last year, but as I recall he did slumpright around the time he was elevated to leadoff. I’m not saying he can’t do the job (as a matter of fact I think he’s just the right guy for it), he just cooled off at that time (though he’s still getting on base).

by tyrannoman on May 21, 2009 12:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t understand your point. If you t agree that hitting leadoff doesn’t hurt Lewis (since last year, in a sample size about 6 times larger than this one, he hit very well leading off) then why bring it up?

Adoptive parent of Noah Lowry. Because he was awesome once, and, goddammit, he shall be awesome once again!

by Cookyman on May 21, 2009 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

perhaps I didn’t express myself clearly. The Giants, collectivley, have been rancid in the 1 hole in the lineup. While Winn hit there, he didn’t hit well. When Burriss hit there, he didn’t hit well. When Lewis was boosted into the leadoff spot earlier this year, it just happened to come at a time where he was cooling off from his red hot start. That’s why he’s been jerked around the lineup. (of course, based on the last two games he seems to be heating up again. He drove the ball to right last night and the night before but Giles played both balls well. First time he’s pulled the ball with authority in awhile).

by tyrannoman on May 21, 2009 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is more in line with my gripe.

How is the guy with the highest OBP and 3rd highest SLG getting penciled in the #6 spot? This is going on for most of a week now. What The Freak is THAT all about?

Lewis lead off I am cool with. Lewis hitting #2 behind Burriss was nice idea. (Heck with Burriss’s speed a batter that will willing to take counts deep might actually allow the team to steal a bag instead of GiDP, strike out through/out DP from a bust hit & run. Both games with that line up the team did score 6 runs). Lewis in the 6-8 for a prolonged period is a complete waste on a squad that can’t afford and offensive waste.

my bad.

Lewis had the 4th highest SLG. Winn, Panda & Molinia are higher.

totally agree with the Burris/Lews 1-2 idea. I still can defend him hitting 5th, just to get a long AB after Panda and Molina.

by tyrannoman on May 21, 2009 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have no problem with Lewis in any of the top 5 spots given our choices.
