It is time to pass judgments, so I decree

Dear Diary,

The temptation has been there pretty much since Spring Training.  But I have kept it at bay by repeating the mantra "It's too early" over and over again.  Small sample sizes and spring training performances are no reason to get too high or too low.

But this Giants team doesn't evoke the melancholy that last year's team did.  I have quite a love/hate relationship with this team.  Sure, there are parts of this Giants team that evoke a "meh."  But, mostly this is a strong emotion relationship.

Take Aaron Rowand, for instance.  I really hate this guy.  His stupid batting stance.  His throws to the infield (though, they haven't been egregious so far this year).  His playing time (whenever I grind my teeth at Schierholtz lack of playing time, the tooth dust falls on the floor and spells Rowand's name).  His contract.  His lack of production.

All things I hate.

Yet, there's also Timmy, Matt, Dirty, the Big Unit, Sandeeval (for some reason I've taken to saying his name like a little kid might), Ishikawa (yes, I love him.  And I'm not ashamed), Molina, FLew, Winn and Schierholtz.

Well, it's May and I can not keep the temptation at bay any longer.  This fanpost might look ridiculous very soon.  It might even look ridiculous now.  But I must pass judgment.  Both good and bad.  So here goes:

THE GOOD

Sandoval:  We were all thinking it.  But he proved us all wrong.  He's a hitter.  There's nothing more to say.  Oh, except maybe "passable defense!"

Lewis:  Yeah, the strikeouts.  Yeah, the defensive blunders.  But this guy has arrived.  If he can figure out a couple of things (e.g. how to keep his discipline from leading to excessive strikeouts) then this guy might just have himself a breakout.

Affeldt:  Affeldt this might happen.  He's pretty darn good.  And the puns!

Wilson:  The blow up and the 3-2 counts aside, he's looked good this year.  I say he still continues to prove delorean wrong.

Barry Zito?:  Somebody told us he was back.  His stuff is looking better.  He's actually pitching well right now.  Will it continue?  I expect no.  I hope yes.

THE BAD

Aaron Rowand:  I touched on this guy before.  Remember that month last year?  I really wish that Rowand showed up more often.  He's a frickin' offensive drain.  That's not good coming from the highest paid offensive player.

Burriss:  I think Grant covered him just fine.

Bochy:  Everything relevant has been said about him ten times over.

Howry:  He hasn't exactly looked great so far.  And he keeps going out there almost every game.  I'm not expecting good things from him.

THE REALLY GOOD

Lincecum: Yeah

Cain:  I've said this a couple of times already.  His secondary stuff looks better than I've ever seen it.  He still needs to work on his control (it haunted him in his game today).  But I think it's time we got real and admit that Cain might be it.

Johnson:  Besides the outing before last, he's looked really good.  The only question for me is his durability.

Sanchez:  I'm one of the biggest fanboys around, so you know he has to be in this category.

THE UNDECIDED

Renteria:  He's looked bad.  He's looked good.  Which is the true Renteria?  Hell if I know.

Winn:  He's looked bad, mostly.  Except in the field.  Classy, there.  I don't know if age has caught with him or if it is just a slow start.  I am reserving judgment for now.

Ishikawa:  This guy confuses me.

THE VERDICT

That's a lot of sentence fragments.  Also, more positive than negative!  I think the Giants could actually be above .500 this year.  I really do.  I could see the starting pitching continue to dominate all year.  I think we've seen what the Giants offense will do.  And it's been enough.

After that horrible six game stretch, the Giants have gone 9-4.  And two of those games, the Giants really should have won.  I think 85 wins isn't out of the question.  There are still a lot of things that have to go right.  But I am much more optimistic about this season than I have been for a Giants season in four years.

whom I left out, for some reason.

He would have been under the bad category, though.

The last men on the roster

It’s hard to get upset or excited about a 3rd string player. Velez is a special sort of player. Torres has been pretty outstanding and also didn’t make your list. If I had to put him somewhere it would be “good” – not enough appearances for bad, but seems like a good back-up outfielder and pinch-runner.

When he first made the team, I was not happy with the decision. However, he has become probably my favorite non-starter. I like the guy. We’ll see how much he contributes, and for how long, but I like watching him.

1) LOL @

that kind of special

2) Velez, even though it was that kind of special as to which he was referred, is nevertheless unworthy of distinction. In my mind, the Giants have a twenty-four man roster. In fact, we aren’t even having this conversation.

Fred Lewis-- move into the Undecided stack

Elsewise, I pretty much agree. Except I think it is too early to fret much. We aren’t going to the Big Dance in October anyway, so it doesn’t much matter whether our invitation doesn’t show up on May 2 or July 2 or — as I am hereby setting the over/under — September 12.

Yes. Oh, wait-- you mean the Giants, like, as a team? Then no.

14-1. The Giants’ general manager isn’t going to make the late-summer moves that will carry us over the top. Search your feelings, Luke; you know it’s true.

Actually his worst month is June. Lowest power numbers in April but a career .273 compared to .272 in June. Last season batted .241 in April and .232 in July. Actually if you look at each month, he is pretty consistent (273/.292/.272/.306/.286/.300) month to month.

Bochy

hardball times did a study of managers and Bochy game out as an above average manager, though they admit that managers have very little to do with the success of a team. I

by Change Up on May 3, 2009 1:55 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I’ve believed for a long time that a manager has a much higher capacity to negatively impact a game than he will ever have to positively impact a game. Thus, his greatest responsibility is to simply not screw it up. It doesn’t sound like it should be too hard, but some guys just can’t keep their fingers out of the pudding.

I don’t think Pablo “proved us wrong”, he’s really just a slight BABIP regression away from hitting like most of the McCoven (and he projection systems) thought he would.

Aaron Rowand

His fielding has been much better this year. His hitting, well could we just bring Pedro Feliz back and save about 8 million dollars a year. In the old days it would have been a trade, Rowand for Feliz and the giants (in todays dollars) also throw in an additional 8 million a year to the phils. Last year it was just a case of reciprical signings. If you look at the stats this year, so far the phils have gotten the bargain.

Ischikawa

He looks good in the field. He does not look all that bad at bat. But he seems to have 395 foot power to the 400 foot mark. He has probably hit about 10 fly outs so far deep into the warning track. He had the power to make them go out in Spring training. Speaking of power in Spring training, the giants may take until the end of July to match their homerun total in Spring training.

I think we might be looking at park effects. When Ishikawa was away from SF he (like most of the rest of the Giants team) went into a horrible slump. But we can expect more dingerz.exe, if Ishi is given a chance to take some rips away from the damp and spacious Phone booth.

From the fielding metrics I’ve seen, ishikawa’s fielding has been judged to be extremely valuable, IIRC. Still, I wonder if his hitting doesn’t pick up how long they’ll keep running him out there.

ishikawa, etc

I’m an Ish fan … but offensively he looks like he’s asleep. He’s taking hitable strikes and swinging at pitcher pitches. Anyone notice Frandsen has been playing second, instead of short, the last couple of games, with Downs in right. I don’t know of any reason, but the Giants may be getting him used to the right side again in case of a call-up. Guzman is up to .300 now with 6 home runs.

richie isn’t being used at third, so guzman would be a natural replacement in the platoon we’ve been seeing. could also start at third every 5th or 6th day when pablo is catching, and be our power off the bench. i get the idea that we’ll see him starting there around midseason if travis hasn’t dug himself out of the toilet.

What about Uribe and Aurillia? (Bochy please do not read this)

I have to admit I’m confused about these guys.

Adequate defense for both, although Uribe is a slug in the middle IF positions. Neither of them is nails at the plate, but compared to the young kids, they really work the count and have at least been tough outs in clutch situations. No, you can’t count on them to get it done necessarily, but you can almost always count on them to wear down a pitcher in a stressful late inning with men on base.

That’s got to be good for something.
