Brandon Crawford is white!?

Confusion over minor league players' racial identity is something of a running joke on MCC. Which players did you incorrectly think were white/black/etc.?

Mine:

- I heard about Jerome Williams for a couple of years without realizing he was black before seeing his picture in Baseball America. This is back at a time when there weren't a lot of really famous black guys from Hawaii.

- I was really surprised when I first saw Khalil Greene as a rookie and he was a blonde-haired white guy. I mean, his name's Khalil!

- I always thought Billy Sadler was black until I first saw him on tv. During his first cup of coffee, I was out of the Bay Area and listening on gameday audio, so this confusion lasted for some time after his debut. I have no idea why I thought he was black.

- I never would've guessed Marvin Benard was Nicararaguan, given his name. His middle name is Larry, even!

I’ve noticed stereotypes in my thinking when I read a scouting report. If a player is listed as toolsy, I usually think they are black. Conversely, grinder/gritty/gets more out of his talents/etc. end up being white in my mind. I think it’s part my own stereotyping and part experience. By experience, I mean that those biases get put into scouting reports initially, and I have learned that and so my mind guides my thoughts one way or the other. Or, maybe I’m just a racist dick.

Baron's right. But it is also partially driven by media shortcuts

For years, black baseball players were patronizingly described as “natural talents” at whatever position. This was thought to be a compliment by the whiteys who were saying it, but in fact was a dismissal of the work, thought, creativity (tool #19 on the Jenkins “list”) those guys put in. So I wonder if “toolsy” is the new “natural talent,” and is just the new version of stereotyping and shortcutting the media use.

I’d say that’s a fair assessment. Turks, Afgahnis and Iranians would probably be seen as non-white by a large majority, too.

It probably also has to with Jews being more long-established in the United States and not presently being seen as The Enemy.
