Lowry's agent: Giants messed him up
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4179864
Thought this deserved its own fanpost. Curious to see what the Giants' response will be:
As San Francisco Giants pitcher Noah Lowry prepared to undergo surgery for a circulatory problem Tuesday, his agent charged the team's medical staff with misdiagnosing a forearm injury 14 months ago, subjecting Lowry to an unnecessary arm operation and turning a potential short-term recovery into a lengthy medical ordeal.

Perhaps his agent would have preferred the Giants not to buy out Noah’s arnitration years.
Maybe they did misdiagnose Noah. But his financial situation could have been a lot worse.

Interesting. Lowry was hurt (oblique, I think) during Conte’s last season (he quit in October of 2006) and really ran into some of the heavy medical problems in his 2007 season. I wonder if he was partially a victim of staff turnover?
Dave Groeschner took over for Conte after he left. Groeschner has been with the Giants for most of the last years, but he worked with the Cubs in 2004 and Chicago apparently didn’t like the way he did things.
by xanthan on May 19, 2009 12:59 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I’ll add that Groeschner had some back press coming back to the Giants from Chicago but I think a major sticking point with him and the Cubs was that Prior and Wood missed most of their seasons in 2004. Which, in hindsight, it’s pretty funny to get made a trainer for not keeping Mark Prior and Kerry Wood healthy. I don’t think even God could have kept them healthy.

I would be interested to find out how/why the agent thinks this is a misdiagnosis. It’s not only Groeschner’s fault here. Several doctors looked a Lowry, and had to sign off on this before the surgery. Do we really think Noah didn’t get a second (or third or fourth for that matter) opinion before undergoing this procedure? Right.
by tyrannoman on May 19, 2009 1:05 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Here’s what I put in the other post (if I may repeat myself):
Oh please. There was nothing stopping him from getting a second opinion at the time. And frankly, an athlete who is about to have surgery should definitely get a second opinion. Even if the Giants’ staff was wrong at the time (and all doctors make mistakes), it’s bad form for Lowery’s agent to come out whining about it now. Why wasn’t he advising his client to seek further medical opinions at the time?

I don’t care. He’s still one of my favorite Giants ever. Also, he was pretty great in his first two years in the majors. I think a lot of people mainly remember his bad 2006 and lucky 2007, but his 2004-2005 seasons were very similar to Cain’s 2005-2006 (though Lowry was a couple of years older). Anyway:

Isn’t the agent counting his eggs before they hatch here? I mean, I hope they did find out what the actual cause was and he returns fully healthy, but what happens if this doesn’t fix it? It just seems like he should’ve waited until Noah is healthy and throwing from a mound before he starts accusing the Giants of malpractice.

I love Noah and think he was a great Giant and a good pitcher, but the first year he got injuries back in 2006 in his first start of the year was the beginning of the end. I always felt the Giants misdiagnosed Noah THAT year when he had an oblique injury supposedly. I always thought the injury was to his arm for the get go, and of course later in the year he was shutdown due to a forearm injury. The reason being for my suspicions were his erratic command and diminished velocity on his fastball. The year before (which was a significant increase in IP from 04 to 05) Lowry was around 89-91 and by the end of 06 and then into 07 he was at 87 tops. Usually closer to 84-85. His command also went to shit as well.
So I do agree that he was misdiagnosed by the Giants staff and their doctors. I think were Noah went wrong was in continuing to try to pitch THROUGH pain and not saying anything to trainers that something wasn’t quite right. Had he been upfront from the outset all of this might have been avoided or resolved sooner. Granted he’s a pro and most people want to compete DESPITE injuries, but I think in Lowry’s case it might have ended his career. He also declined to have surgery for 2 years on his arm until his awful spring training last year when they pretty much forced him to get it done.
by Hobbes2d on May 19, 2009 4:15 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I was at the game where he strained his oblique (against the Braves, as I recall) and he clearly grabbed his ribcage as he came off the mound. Now, I’m not a doctor and I slept in my own bed last night, but when a guy grabs his ribs after a pitch, that is usually the site of the injury rather than the forearm.
by tyrannoman on May 19, 2009 4:55 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I've worked on a bunch of med mal cases.
First, it would be interesting to see whether one can sue a team or its trainers or anything, as they are not licensed physicians. If there is a cause of action against anyone, it would be against whatever physicians made the diagnosis, not Giants trainers.
Second, of course, not all mistakes are negligence. If the diagnosing physicians complied with the standard of care and made a reasonable diagnosis under all the circumstances, it’s not negligence, albeit wrong.
It definitely looks like a mistake was made. When two independent outside docs who are independent of each other arrive at the same conclusion, that is pretty compelling. If they think it was a circulatory deal from the start, that’s pretty strong to me.
Anyway, good luck, Noah. Get well.

I was diagnosed with herniated discs in L4,L5, and L6 in 1982 (Sports Injuries). Fusion was recommended. I was as not going there at all. When a fusion is done, you are jacked up for the rest of your life. The procedure is final. I mean c’mon, they put a metal cage around the damaged portion of your spine. No. Thank. You.
Talked with a number of people, and decided there were other options. Worked the ASU Sports Medicine Director for about 4 years and a very good chiropractor and muscle therapist until the disc degeneration finally won out in 2001. Decided to have the surgery when I could not feel my legs below my knees.
Had a Microdiscectomy: Lumbar Micro decompression Spine Surgery, which did not exist at the time of the original diagnosis, and it worked great. As explained to me by my Spinal Surgeon, at some point the surgery or disc replacement will have to be done again. It could be 20 years or 1 year. Here is hoping the artificial discs are perfected by that time.

Yes, fusion was recommended to me 9 years ago… I also did conservative therapy and chiropractic for a couple of years and while not pain free or even very spry, I’m reasonably functional (I think stopping with the manual labor also helped quite a bit).
How long ago did you have the procedure? I’ve heard of it and while fusion is not something I want to do, this sounds less drastic.

Going on eight years ago. Have not had much trouble at all. It is just amazing that spinal surgery can be done as out patient. Check out the link for a detailed explanation. I have had five arthroscopy surgeries on both knees combined. The first one in 1975 was in patient, stayed in the hospital for three days. The last one in 1998 was 25 minutes in the doctors office with me watching the surgery on the screen at the same time.
I have occasional pain if I spend all afternoon working in the yard, or doing heavy lifting. Lots of stretching and since the little nvsfg’s moved off to college and what not, we set up a home gym with a stationary bike, a bow-flex and the requisite 32 inch flat screen LCD on the wall.
The surgery while expensive (25K) went great. It was out patient, about a three-week recovery to get mobile again, and about six months with lifting restrictions. The only thing I would insist upon with your insurance is that they allow blood tests every week. I ended up with a staph infection that was nasty and did more damage than anything else. (describing that whole ordeal would be longer than one of Grant’s intricate “off day” posts, LOL) .

It seems to me that the agent’s responsibility in an advisory role would have been to strongly suggest getting second and third opinions.
As a job steward at UPS, I always cautioned people to get seen by their own doctor for injuries and even handed out the form you need to file (BEFORE the injury if you don’t want the company doctor making your medical decisions) to new members.

Schulman brings up an interesting point here: how will this war of words affect Kevin Frandsen, who is a client of Damon Lapa as well. (I’m now predisposed to dislike anyone named “Damon” since a certain KNBR host began doing a show.)
Given how upset Frandsen was after being sent to Fresno at the end of spring training, and now with the Lowry thing, I wonder if Lapa’s dealing with some disgruntled players and lashing out at the Giants on their behalf, for better or worse.
