Prospect Swaps and the 1B problem

I know prospect trades never happen, Delmon-Garza being the closest thing I can remember, but nonetheless it got me thinking about a trade that could work out for two teams and their respective interests.

The idea I had in mind was trading Tim Alderson for Klye Blanks and Cla Meredith. Blanks is 23 years old and has never posted an OBP below .380 in his minor league career. His power isn't quite where many thought it would be given his monstrous frame, but he would still have more power than anyone on this team or anyone in our system with the possible exception of Villalona (who is clearly 3+ years away).

Alderson might be the better overall talent, although that could probably be debated, but we have a plethora of pitchers and no imminent 1B option both for now and the future. Blanks would be under our control for the next 6+ years and has the added benefit of helping us this year when we might have some small chance to contend.

Alderson has a chance to be on this club next year, with MadBum close behind, but we are guaranteed 4 pitchers on this staff next year. I suppose we could trade Sanchez instead, but he wouldn't bring nearly as much as Alderson.

Add in Meredith and we can strengthen our pen a bit. No, he's not nearly as effective as he used to be, but he's still a lot better than Medders in my opinion, who is a time bomb waiting to explode.

As San Diego is even further from contending than we are, they don't need someone like Blanks who can contribute now. Yes, there are rumblings he might play LF for them, but I think if a deal like this was on the table for them, it would be more appealing as there isn't much top line pitching at the top of their system.

Overall, not too bad an idea in my opinion

NEVER TRADE GOOD PITCHING

like I said, never trade good pitching, unless you are getting Willie Mays in his prime on the other side of the trade.

I disagree, good hitting prospects will always be more projectable then good pitching prospects.

So, what you're saying is...

Never, ever trade good pitching? Willie Mays in his prime is a bit lofty of a floor and pitching prospects just aren’t that reliable.

But trading Alderson for a power bat at a corner sounds like a workable idea.

Intradivision trades make the price go up. and there’s no reason to believe we’d want to help San Diego with its problems.

Power bats a 1st can be had through FA (although more expensive) a good pitcher with upside is not so easy to find. I would rather sign Delgaldo or LaRoche for a few years.

Really?

Delgado who just had surgery and is at an advanced age and LaRoche who screams nothing but average production (even though that’d be like a 2 win boon compared to what we have). LaRoche’s power would be hurt by ATT

too early

he is promising, but that’s all he is at this point. He’s still yet to have good production at any level, he’s just done well for his age. He’s still ahrd to read and I would bet is a minimum of 3 year’s away from being ready to contribute. Pablo’s meteoric rise is the exception, not the rule.

Villalona is as raw a player as we have in our system

by NeifiChicken on May 19, 2009 12:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Shouldn’t we try a Guzman at 1B first – we know he can hit, his glove is the question mark – before trading a topline pitching prospect? Guzman could conceivably hold down the fort offensively (w/ Ishikawa as a late-inning D replacement) until Villalona is ready.

yes, and soon to we see what he’s got so as to make a decision on this issue.

I’d consider it, for sure. Blanks’s upside is pretty amazing. The Pads and Giants wouldn’t do it for fear of interdivision shame for the next ten years, though.

What’s with everyone’s “trade Alderson” bit? Trading Alderson at this point is just stupid; this is a team that’s going to be built on the starting rotation and by proxy the bullpen, not the lineup.

Besides, we’ve got about six first basemen in the farm system, and if one of them doesn’t work out we need to seriously reevaluate our minor league coaching staffs. Sandoval can play 1B (he’s better suited to it, then Rohlinger/Gillespie/FA can play 3B), Villanola can play 1B, Ishikawa can play 1B, Guzman can play 1B, Schierholtz can play 1B, Bowker can play 1B, and I’m a little confused by the suggestion that NONE of those guys will work out AND none of our other droves of infielders can be converted so the ONLY way to get a good 1B is through trade/sign.

Our farm system is brimming with prospects right now, and we’re not going to be in contention this year, and probably not next year, so let’s use this time to find out which one of our plethora of first basemen is going to make the squad.

Sandoval seems to be doing fine at 3B for now, Villalona is 19, Ishikawa is currently the worst 1B in the majors, Guzman, Bowker and Rohlinger are close to being non-prospects, and Schierholtz has 1 career minor league game at 1B.

Sandoval

the other key thing peopel don’t seem to get is that Sandoval’s bat doesn’t really play at 1B. He’d be below average at 1B. I think even at 3B he hovers around average to below, we’re just so bad offensively (and have been at 3B for so long) he seems great. In truth, Pablo needs to be put back behind the plate once Molina is gone and be allowed to catch. Then, when Posey is ready, we trade Pablo

Free agent 3rd baseman?

What free agent 3rd basemen have been worth getting the last 2-3 off seasons? (Hint: Pedro was among the cream of the free agent 3rd base men in that time period. Yes, it is that bad.) And if the team does not get Beltre this off season who next?

From MLBTR here is the list of 3rd baseman avilible this winter.

Third basemen
Rich Aurilia (38)
Adrian Beltre (31)
Geoff Blum (37)
Aaron Boone (37)
Craig Counsell (39)
Joe Crede (32)
Pedro Feliz (35) – $5MM club option with a $500K buyout
Chone Figgins (32)
Nomar Garciaparra (36)
Troy Glaus (33)
Mike Lamb (34)
Melvin Mora (38) – $8MM club option with a $1MM buyout
Pablo Ozuna (35)
Robb Quinlan (33)
Juan Uribe (31)

Outside of getting Beltre there really is not a 3rd base option that is looking to be an upgrade over Sandoval at third. Go a head and name one off that list. Remeber to this is a power starved whom ever you name has to be able to bring more “pop” then Panda.
