Draftin The Giants Part Deux
There have been some rumblings lately about the Giants want to draft a high school pitcher (mlbtraderumors). This would make a certain sense since it is probably the deepest position in the draft, though I won't put too much weight in this rumor as Sabean and Company have traditionally been pretty tight lipped when it comes to their drafting strategy. Just think Lincecum, when Sabean feigned disinterest in the hope to keep the spotlight off of him.
But if we are going to be drafting a high school pitcher over the already discussed possibilities (Scheppers, Crowe, Green, Tate, White), we should probably discuss some of our new options. I've heard that Tyler Matzek, Zack Wheeler, Shelby Miller, and Jacob Turner are possibilities at this point
Tyler Matzek - I already discussed him in an earlier post but here's a quick recap. A projectable lefty with polish. He has four pitches right now (all that could grade in the future as plus): a low 90's fastball that has touched 97 this year, and tight two-plane curveball, a sick slider, and a developing changeup he is already using as a strikeout pitch. He's been considered the top HS pitcher the whole year and has been comp'd to a young Brian Matusz.
Zack Wheeler - He's been tied to the Atlanta Braves an awful lot lately and it's hard to argue with the way the Braves have been drafting the last oh i don't know, couple decades. The thing is we pick right before them, so we have the potential to steal him from under their noses. Wheeler has thrown low 90's (with great life) most of the year, hitting up to 96 at times. He has shown a good feel for pitching and has a solid slide piece. He doesn't really have a changeup to speak of but neither did MadBum.
Shelby Miller - He possibly could have the best fastball in the draft. He sits in the mid 90's and has regularly been recorded in the high 90's and he is said to still have some projection yet. He has a curveball and changeup that are rarely used because of the success of his fastball but could potentially be plus in the future. One more thing, he is not being represented by Boras.
Jacob Turner - He's got videogame numbers right now with a 0.82 ERA and a 92-17 K/BB ratio in 45 innings this year. He's right there with Miller in the running for best prep fastball with Miller and is still believed to have some projection left. He reached 98 mph in his last start, is said to have an above-average curveball, and good control right now. His combination of great stuff, projectability, and polish have him shooting up draft boards right now. He is a Boras client.
I didn't write about Matt Purke just because we haven't been tied to him and it seems as if his stock has been slipping a little as of late (going mid 1st). He does have a Mid 90's fastball with projection and is said to have slightly better pure stuff than Matzek (both southpaws). So feel free to vote for him.

I’d probably rate them:
Miller, best velocity, good curveball, delivery should work for changeup;
Matzek, longest track record, solid array of pitches;
Wheeler, good life on the fastball, jerky delivery;
Turner, solid all round.
I’m not really qualified to distinguish among them, and I think we all trust Dick Tidrow and Co. when it comes to pitching. But that’s how I’d order them for now.
The key question is how this group fits in with the overall prospect line up. I think Stras and Ackley are clearly ahead of the high schoolers.
I’d probably put Crow ahead of the high schoolers, too, given his combination of stuff and polish. I could go either way on Scheppers, as I think he might be a Rich Harden good-stuff-frequent-injuries kind of guy.
Then you’ve got the super-polished college ace Kyle Gibson, who’s probably a big leaguer but not an ace at that level.
I’d probably stick Miller and Matzek behind Crow, but ahead of the others, based on what I’ve read.
P.S. I’m not feeling it with Donovan Tate. I usually like risky high-upside picks, but I’m not sure this guy can hit college pitching, much less professionals.

agree with this list
I like Tate, but maybe that’s just me

if the giants took tate...
i’d be excited to add another young bat, but i would be “fairley” worried that the team might not be able to develop it. I recognize that at some point you’ve just gotta take a chance and go for it with high schoolers, though, and maybe this is the year.
I’d rate it:
Strasburg
Ackley
Crow
Matzek
Z. Wheeler
Tate
Idolizing Robb Nen since 2002...

I like Wheeler just a tick over Matzek, but I’d be very happy with either. I don’t trust Ackley, and I agree with Dan about Kyle Gibson. I’m inclined to put Crow in that same category, but that’s more of an intuition than based on any demonstrable fact. I hope the Giants stay far, far away from Tate. I don’t yet know enough about Miller to have an opinion.
Actually, I wish we could trade down to around #15 or so, and draft Rich Poythress there. Assuming we got something useful out of the trade itself, I think that might work out better. This draft is really a crapshoot – more so that usual, it seems – after Strasburg. Might be a good year to lie low. Too bad you can’t do that in baseball.

I’ve had the exact same thought regarding Poythress. Maybe he’ll end up getting drafted higher than we expect.

What?
And listen to all the griping from the statheads about how Poythress doesn’t have Top-Six talent? And how you can’t draft for need, you have to take the BPA? Nah.

No need to trade down. Do what the Brewers did when they selected Matt LaPorta a few drafts ago.

Since you can’t teach pure fastball velocity nor handedness, I went with Matzek by a hair over Miller. I would have flip-flopped the order if both threw with the same hand, but in this case I am going with the lefty since he is the rarer commodity. Looking at scouting reports, Matzek and Miller have an edge over Turner and Wheeler in terms of secondary pitches, but the edge really isn’t that pronounced. Hate to sound like a broken record, but I will have to trust the Giants on their pick of a high school pitcher, but I am actually in favor of them going high school arm since the top prepsters have a higher upside than the available college arms this year.

LH vs. RH
I think I’d rather the Giants get a RH pitcher than a LH, if their skills are similar. Obviously, I’d take Bumgarner over Pucetas, but if the choice is Matzek and Wheeler, or Matzek and Miller, I’d take the RH, just keep the other team batting lefty as much as possible in AT&T.

HS pitchers have a checkered history
Miller, Purke, Maztek and Wheeler are NOT Boras clients.

Don’t all pitchers have a checkered history? I seem to recall MANY a college pitcher who were absolute crap despite being highly touted in school. And many who never even reached the majors because of injuries.

Matzek
He sounds pretty solid. I like guys that have a couple different strong pitches they can go to.
I also value control above everything. heres what MLB says about their control.
Wheeler-His command is in and out. His fastball command was better than with his curve. Inconsistency with delivery causes the disruption in command.
Matzek- It wasn’t pinpoint, but overall it was good. He left a few balls up in the zone. He tried to throw one curve for a strike and the harder curve to chase and was above-average with that
Miller- Biggest flaw is that he doesn’t show consistent command and control, though some saw him more as a high strike zone pitcher.
Turner- Has average high school command, with a slight head jerk that impacts his consistency.
Purke- He has good command and moves the ball around the zone well.
Crowe- He had good command and was generally around the plate. His fastball command was better as he was inconsistent in spotting his secondary pitches
Scheppers-Considering the long layoff from pitching in a live situation, his command was pretty good. An improved and smoother delivery clearly helped.
So they review Matzek, Purke, Crow and Scheppers as the best controllers. Inconsistency is a key word.

a thing one must remember when reading the MLB reports is that it is normally just a one day scouting report. If the pitcher is “on” then the report glows if the pitcher is having an “off” day then it will be reflected in the report.

I find it funny that Purke has kind of fallen off a bit in terms of people talking about him. He’s a HS LHP who throws in the low 90s with a good frame and projection. What’s NOT to like?
by Hobbes2d on May 18, 2009 2:53 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't know
He wasn’t quite as dominant as some expected and the other lefty Matzek seems to be better in almost every regard, even if marginally so. Still mid first round is nothing to balk at. There is just less of a consensus for the top prep righty.

I would rather have Aaron Crow than these guys (I would still be happy with any of them though)

however he very likely will be selected before the Giants pick at #6.

I just want the Giants to draft a pitcher with control problems or a CF who GIDPs on the first pitch as much as possible and rarely walks.

Nice post again
I voted for Miller this time, I like that he has the best fastball plus he’s a RHP, we are getting overloaded with lefties in the rotation.
The way it’s looking Green might fall to us in Round Two, much like how Crawford fell to us in Round Four, he was a Top 10 choice pre-season and fell horribly last year.
Thought I would throw out this thought for commentary here as well (posted this on other thread): how good is the draft next season? I’m not too impressed with the group of players this season; if this were last season, we could have picked up a Smoak or the other Beckham.
My thought would be to select a Boras client and stick to slot for him, which would pretty much guarantee that he won’t sign with us. He won’t know anything is up because he doesn’t negotiate until the last day anyhow, ignoring all the team’s tries for communication. Then the Giants just send him slot and say it’s non-negotiable. That would be that.
That would give us the pick after the #6 pick (actual pick depends on how many teams ahead of us don’t sign their draftee, but odds are #7 overall), which would give us two picks in next year’s first round draft, probably in the first 15-20 picks. Of course, if the depth is worse next season, then this don’t work, but I thought it would be interesting as a thought exercise.

Shelby Miller
Heard Nolan Ryan went to check out the Texas RHP Miller and came away very impressed. Believe it was a state playoff game and Miller had 14 Ks.

Here is an article about the game. When SF selects HS pitchers they normally seemed to like the big sturdy kind – Cain, Alderson, Bumgarner
Jacob Turner….. 6’5" 210 Boras client
Shelby Miller…… 6’3" 195
Tyler Maztek…… 6’3" 185
Zach Wheeler…. 6’4" 170

Say
Why isn’t Rich Poythress given more attention from draftniks?
I was reading something on him – http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/college/on-campus/2009/267933.html – and he sounds pretty good. Is it just that he’s not Top 10 good, but more back of first round good? Or has he cooled off since that article?
Jes’ wondering…
