I live in New York City. I watched the first two games of the series on the Mets Broadcast. They weren’t this Mets-centric. fox was about this bad, but they weren’t dredging up crap from weeks ago just so they could ignore the game.

To be fair, I thought the Mets team did some okay analysis, and gave a lot of the Giants players their due. Plus one of them grew up in Pacifica so they were actually pretty SF-tourism and Giants history centric. not as good as our guys, but the best I’ve heard outside of them (outside of the SF-crew I’ve pretty much only heard Fox, Espn, etc. Again it’s not a fair comparison, since I hate those guys and actually kinda liked the Mets-broadcast team)

Giant Fan in Connecticut

Hi Guys

I am a Giant Fan living in Connecticut! When you have time can you explain why a city the size of SF cannot afford a payroll close to that of the Mets and Red Sox? I love this team but i do not understand. I’m trying to learn.

by Tariq on May 17, 2009 6:50 PM PDT reply actions

ball park

They’ve been paying off the ball park for the last 9 years

by superk1ng on May 17, 2009 6:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Because the Giants didn’t hold the city for ransom trying to get a new ballpark

you mean

it doesn’t cost $65986279267982 to sit behind home plate?

We actually want people to sit there.

So the seats are paid for.

Even though I still find the Field Club prices expensive, I started considering one yesterday when Lincecum wandered over and started signing. Actually, he was at the end of the aisle that goes all the way up to Lower Box 120something, but still, I was trapped in the middle of VB 307 and thought, Next time.

Payroll isn’t everything.

by Natto on May 17, 2009 6:51 PM PDT up reply actions

They can afford Red Sox payroll, but it bears mention that the SF bay area is the smallest two-team market in baseball. And they have a $23MM/year mortgage payment.

cause the Giants didn’t rip off the tax payers and paid for their own ball park

SF isn't that big of a city.

Also Mets and Red Sox are the most valuable teams behind the Yanks.

by GiantBrass on May 17, 2009 6:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Among other things not named Zito (and some other deferred contracts), the Giants paid for (most of) their ballpark rather than getting it paid for by the city.

by shanghaijim on May 17, 2009 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

also

according to Magowan, the Giants should be a top 5 payroll team once the Stadium is paid off…which i think is going to happen in like 5 or 6 years. That and the fact that they’ve got that project going on near the ball park that’s supposed to bring in a bunch of revenue.
