The McC-Meme that just won't die (but absolutely should)....
It really surprises me that so many of the McCoven faithful are still talking about this, considering we're all mostly level-headed and rational when it comes to this organization. In fact, because of this, it drives me up the wall anytime someone mentions this...
Now, despite my "sabermetric" leanings, I understand that numbers don't tell the whole story, that every once in a while a player comes out of nowhere and mesmerizes us fans to the point where we fall head over the heels for the guy and collectively back the guy like he's ours, and all those who threaten him will feel our wrath. We experienced this last year with Pablito (and a little Romo on the side).
And I know Jesús Guzman COULD be that kind of guy this season, but the chances of that are as good as the chances of Bruce Bochy passing up a situation to insert one of his savvy vets into the lineup during a double switch.
OK, so I know the dude ripped it up last season with the A's, destroyed the VWL, and has been raking ever since he joined this fantabulous organization of ours. I get that he could be "this year's Sandoval", and I know that he might very well be an upgrade over Travis Ishikawa, even when considering Ishikawa's sizable advantage defensively.
I also know that calling him up would probably not be the difference between playoffs/no playoffs but would unnecessarily burn yet another spot on the 40-man roster and start Guzman's service-clock time toward free agency sooner than need be.
I'm not going to delve into his minor league equivalencies (nothing to write home about) or what his projected performance would be if he were to be called up, because I don't want to try and get all math-y and frustrate the hell out of myself and all those of you who made it this far without changing the page. But if the above paragraph didn't sway you, then maybe this will: there's a guy on the active roster right now who could provide a poor-to-mediocre glove with a good, potentially very good bat. There is a guy. Right here.
Maybe Jesús will be a major force for the Giants in the future. I hope he turns out well for us. But as of now, I'd like to see another season's worth of production and improved defense before I see him in a Giants uniform.

I also think it worth noting that we haven't learned everything about Ishikawa yet.
Ishikawa IS the guy with the job right now, and while that doesn’t have to be permanent, I also wouldn’t want to sack him before we have learned whether he can improve or not, in what ways can he be expected to improve, and so on. I just don’t think we know everything there is to know about that guy. I do, though, think we know everything about Eugenio Velez, and for good or bafflingly bad, there’s nothing else to know. I kind of think that of Burriss, too, frankly. But TI could still evolve. Can’t say he won’t. Yet.

I’d love to see a Jesus/Travis platoon. It’d certainly make the team more interesting than Richie/Travis semi-platoon. But Jesus would have to play. I don’t want to bring him up and let him rot on the bench with Nate.
As for your Nate proposal. Duh. Stick Winn in CF and Nate in RF. If Big Papi can get benched in Boston, Rowand can get benched here (I don’t care what he did today. He fucking blows goats).
I’d also get demote Velez and bring up either Frandsen (for good) or Bowker.

Fixed that for you. Seriously, I just don’t see the reason to keep Velez. His two walk off hits aside, he makes errors in the field, he makes base running errors, and I get a queasy feeling in my stomach every time he steps on the field.

Agree re Velez. "You can't fix stupid." (My now Pavlovian response whenever Velez is mentioned)
His invidivual skills MIGHT improve marginally, but he overall is just never going to improve. He simply doesn’t understand the game, and thus he can’t think 2-3 steps ahead.
Like when he’s in the field and something “unexpected” happens (which itself is absurd, because there are only a few possible permutations when a batter puts a ball in play) and something gets a little out of the routine, he has NO IDEA where to go on the field. That’s not entirely due to lack of coaching or experience— someone who understands the game enough to play it professionally should know where to go on a grounder to RF with runners on this or that base. Holy flicking christo almighty.

“You can’t fix stupid”
Not a direct correlation, but I Coach Girls Fastpitch Softball, and for the first time in a long time I had players that fit into this category. Good athletes, but they are missing the neural synapses to complete the thought process. These three girls continued to make mistakes and errors in judgment that cannot be explained, as we have practiced situational play repeatedly. It just kills me every time
Generally, you can Coach around a lack of skill, or a lack of speed, or even a lack of power. You cannot Coach around stupid.
This is how I feel about Velez. It is just an impending sense of dread. Something bad will happen.

I get the feeling if called up now Guzman might make Bowker’s first base glove work look good. I would rather Guzman is playing every day so he can get to a level that his stick could make up for defensive gaffs then we can talk platoons and competing for MLB play time. If we are lucky that point is only a couple months away.
I am right with you on Items B & C. As for Velez I still say he is fine on a 90+ loss team. This squad should not view itself as a 90+ loss team. I have enjoyed Velez but with Torres due back Frandsen makes much more sense than Velez.

there’s rumors that Jesus will be called up to DH in the interleague games. That’s a good start. Don’t give up on Ishi, but platoon them for now and if Jesus starts hitting and TI continues to struggle, then Jesus should start getting the bulk of the starts.

Dude had two good seasons – as a 24 year old in his third year in AA, in a crazy hitters league, and as a 23 year in his second year in A+, after he had spent the two year before it in AA. I’d stick with Ishikawa for now.

As said before, if it’s Ishi down for Jesus, I’m “ehhh”.
If it’s Aurilia DFA’d for Jesus, I’m “woohoo!”
I still would like to see him up, though, especially if Ishi continues to be the worst first baseman in baseball far and away. The excitement that comes from watching an exciting, competent hitter like Pablo vs. an automatic out like Ishikawa is pretty big for me. And I don’t really buy the service clock thing. That’s only something you worry about with a can’t miss prospect, not someone who could be awesome or could be lol. And the 40-man roster? You really think we’d miss Bocock?

Anyone see that piece in the chronicle (was it by jenkins?) saying how pretty much anyone can play first base? I’m not sure if molina can play first, but I know I don’t want to find out. The writer laughs off the importance of range and footwork at first base – I agree that it’s not the most important defensive position, but that doesn’t mean you can stick anyone there and not expect to lose some serious runs.

I did not have any luck finding anything on this online, but does the whole service time time thing work differently if someone is signed as a minor league free agent. I can’t find anything regarding it, but have to imagine it to be the case.
P.S. If a spot opens up on the 40-man roster, I say it’s worth it to let him DH during the interleague stretch in June.

Well, he’s never been optioned, but I’m not sure if the options start when he was internationally signed or drafted or whenever he’s added to the roster.

The minor league service time works differently, but if the Giants put him on the 40-man and in the majors, it works exactly like it does for every other rookie.
