Rich Aurilia - Still alive, but done as a player

Star-divide

Remember 2001 with 206 hits and 37 jacks....well its 2009 and he's batting .152 and is 0 for 15 over past 7 games with 5 K.

It's about time Richie gets the pink slip.  I don't mind RIchie anchoring Giants baseball games with Dave Roberts but if i see Rich Aurilia PH and strike out with runners in scoring position one more time i am killing the first Dodger hat wearing douche that i see.

Yeah, I had that though too for a second. It’s kinda sad that my first instincts were that “I hope he’s been cut” not that “I hope he’s not dead.”

Maybe a better title would have been “No Country for Old Man” or “A Comparative Study of the Giants Career of Rich Aurilia and the Narrative of the Classic Film ‘Old Yeller’.”

the problem with the Panda or Bengie option is that it means Richie is hitting high up in the order. And less than two out doesn’t matter, because Richie will hit into an inning ending DP

GIANTS:
Well, he will be soon. He’s very ill.
AURILIA:
I’m getting better!
GIANTS:
No, you’re not. You’ll be stone dead in a moment.
FRESNO:
Oh, I can’t take him like that. It’s against regulations.
AURILIA:
I don’t want to go to Fresno!
GIANTS:
Oh, don’t be such a baby.
FRESNO:
I can’t take him.
AURILIA:
I feel fine!
GIANTS:
Well, do us a favour.
FRESNO:
I can’t.
GIANTS:
Well, can you hang around a couple of minutes? He won’t be long.
AURILIA:
I think I’ll fake a bunt.
GIANTS:
You’re not fooling anyone, you know. Look. Isn’t there something you can do?

With great sadness, head hung low, I climb wearily onto the DFA Aurilia bandwagon. Only three steps up, but it might as well be a thousand. I know Rich is somewhere nearby, watching the growing crowd on the bandwagon.

I keep my head down, ashamed at the thought that he might make eye contact. There’s probably nothing to worry about, I think; Richie hasn’t made contact of any kind in weeks. I immediately feel guilty for thinking that.

So here I am. I’m not proud of it, but I’m on the bandwagon.

Meet my new son: Sundrendy Windster, coming soon to a minor league near you.

Sadly, Giant management also recognized Richie was done, and that is why they didn’t offer him a contract until late in the off season. However only in Giantsland, do non- roster invitees to ST have an advantage to hook up on the roster come opening day. Thats if you are over 35 and suck….Is there any wonder why this team hasn’t won a championship in oer 50 years?

Wait….what? Are you saying that other teams don’t have non-roster invitees who make the opening day roster? That’s not even remotely true.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that pie > cake, that Bochy is endowed by his creator with certain undeniable traits, that among these are veteran man-love, a gigantic skull, and the pursuit of the double switch.
Adopted Giant: Fred Lewis, who can still draw a walk.

I took that to mean that Aurilia was like a courtesy invite, the way Dusty Baker brought in Marquis Grissom to the Cubs s.t. camp a few years ago before gracefully releasing him. With the Giants, though, it felt like all Aurilia had to do was show up and swing a bat and he was suddenly back on the 25-man roster.

by ho-hum baby on May 15, 2009 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Grissom would have made this team too had he been invited to ST

To be fair, though, Richie did a lot more than just show up this ST: .352/.470/.519 in 54 ABs.

Key words being “Have an advantage” and that is because of this teams penchant to bend over for an overage veteran over a more promising youngster….This goes back to the Dusty Baker days…remember Shawn Dunston? Charlie Hayes??There are many others……

Better players have been without jobs for longer

Aurilia is lucky in many ways. He scored a 2-year deal for 2007-08 when he should have been a year-to-year pickup at that point. So when he sucked in 2007, he got to come back in 2008 instead of having to scramble for a spring-training invite. It’s telling that no other team has deemed him worthy of a late-season pickup the last 2 years.

Larry Stone (Seattle Times, ex-Giants beat writer at SF Examiner) says he thought for sure that Aurilia was done after watching Richie fail at SS for a couple months in 2004 (the Mariners released him right away). So Aurilia has dragged this “veteran” phase of his career out a long time. No tears.

by ho-hum baby on May 15, 2009 1:52 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

he did a good job of recreating himself as a utility infielder. He’s been useful in that role since his Seattle days, but alas it is time for him to go.

I think I am as frustrated as the next guy over his pinch hitting failures, but .352/.470/.519 (ST) indicates he is not done, just in a horrible slump that is more likely than not to morph into 285/360/500 sometime soon.

Spring Training stats are not indicative of anything.

Well then Travis Ishikawa’s .302/.348/.581 (ST) ought to indicate something, too. And Velez and Burriss had All-Star quality spring training numbers.

Then again, Rowand sucked in Arizona, so perhaps there’s something to this.
