I am reminded more and more

of A’s-era Jason Isringhausen. At the end of the season, the stats say “Saves=40”. But every one of those things involves walks, wild pitches, loading up bases only to get a standing O for getting out of a jam- that the closer creates for himself.

I don’t like every strategy from Moneyball, but Wilson (and Benitez) are good examples of guys that bring more than they are worth in trades.

It’s okay you guys, Brian Wilson just can’t pitch unless it’s the 9th inning and he has between a 1 and 3 run lead. A tie game in the 9th inning just isn’t high enough leverage for him.

sooner or later Bochy will figure out that Wilson isn’t the same pitcher in a non save situation. That’s totally Wilson’s fault, not Bochy’s, but Bochy should know this by now. Wilson’s not the only closer with this problem, but he’s one of the worst. Why did you pay all that money for Howry and Affeldt if you can’t trust them late in a tie game? Howry has more or less shown that he can’t be trusted, but Affeldt looks pretty damn good to me. He should have had the ball in the ninth. Pitch a scoreless ninth, and you get the erratic Sean Green instead of KRod, and you probably win the game.

Sadler could very easily start four games and have his team lose all four games as Sanchez has done recently. And the Giants wouldn’t skip a beat.

So because the Giants lost the last four games Sanchez has started (including one in which he pitched five innings and gave up zero earned runs), we should assume that anyone is better than him?

And does that person have a chance to be as good in the future as Sanchez could be? He needs to be starting in the majors to try to work his issues out. If he can’t, then oh well. If he can, then good. This is exactly why we have a 5th starter spot.

by tobias on May 14, 2009 10:44 PM PDT reply actions

I don't really think so

If he can only pitch in one specific situation in one specific inning, he’s useless. This is the year to see if he can be a decent pitcher. Other than occasionally bringing in Wilson when it’s not close but technically a rulebook save situation, I have no problem with how Wilson is being handled.

His failures are on him and him alone. And we need to see him have those failures if we’re going to know what he is.

what more do you need to find about him? I think he’s proven to them he’s a good closer. They’re not looking to replace him any time soon. Someone just needs to get into his head that he has to bring it everytime out, no matter the score.

Proud new dad of Edgardo errr Edgar Renteria!!!

by rxmeister on May 15, 2009 5:25 AM PDT up reply actions

If he can’t bring it with the game on the line just because the team doesn’t have a 1-3 run lead, that’s a load of crap. That’s still a game-on-the-line situation.

Frankly, I think if it had been a save situation last night, he would have blown it. I really think this is less of a “Brian Wilson didn’t bring it cuz it wasn’t a save situation” kind of thing and more of a “Brian Wilson has poor control and lets runners get on base a lot” kind of thing.

Really, what part of “tied game that NEEDS to fucking stay tied” isn’t the kind of situation a closer can get jacked for?

Brian Wilson is not always bad. Sometimes he’s very, very good. But his control comes and goes and he’s completely erratic. I think we’ll see some actual blown saves before its all over.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

by howtheyscored on May 15, 2009 7:06 AM PDT up reply actions

yes, but how many closers are true lock down closers in this day and age? Not only that, but the handful that are, now make more than 10 million per year like Mariano and KRod do. Brian Wilson is definitely in the next tier after that, and he makes 500K. He’s the closer, pure and simple. He’s not losing his job, and they won’t be looking for a replacement in the FA or trade market, no matter how many times he blows up in non save situations. I agree with you that he should always pitch with the game on the line attitude whether it’s a save situation or not, and it drives me crazy that he doesn’t. Someone needs to get in his face and talk to him about it.

Proud new dad of Edgardo errr Edgar Renteria!!!

by Cookyman on May 15, 2009 8:41 AM PDT up reply actions

because he’s one of the better closers in the game right now and he makes a minimum salary. Why would they be looking to replace him? They’ll eventually have to stop using him in non save situations, but they’ll live with that. If he starts to blow saves that would be one thing, but he’s young and he’s good, and the Giants’ have alot more pressing problems than a closer who can only close.

Proud new dad of Edgardo errr Edgar Renteria!!!

by rxmeister on May 15, 2009 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Wilson is above average, but far from elite. He’s not even top-10 – Rivera, Lidge, Broxton, Nathan, Papelbon, Jenks, Valverde, Soria, Qualls (first year as full time closer, but he’s been great the past two years), and Fuentes are all better.

He’s a pretty good player, a great one to have for free, but really shouldn’t be considered untouchable. The way it’s looking, Bumgarner and Alderson are both going to make the majors relatively soon. Assuming Lincecum, Cain, and Zito are still with us by then, that would leave only two open spots for Bumgarner, Alderson, and Sanchez. Best case scenario, in my opinion, would be to move Alderson or Sanchez (Basically depending on how well Sanchez performs as a starter this year) to the closer’s role, and trade Wilson for a bat.

So when a player hits a line drive foul, he’s doing good?

It’s not that he had a bad game, it’s that he’s had a horrible year. He had a chance to gain some ground by drawing a walk to load the bases, but continued to press. The fact that he is not showing signs of improvement in patience is why I’m pissed.
I’ve seen him hit plenty of line drives this year, this doesn’t impress me. Maybe if they went over the fence or found a hole, I’d care a little more. But just hitting line drives that are caught is the excuse of just about every major leaguer who didn’t make it.

by AmorVincitOmnia on May 15, 2009 4:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow!

I didn’t see the game, so I might not be one to talk, but this seems a bit of an overreaction. Sure, you rather see the guy walk than strike out, but even then, he would have just loaded the bases.

I am pissed that Sandoval, Molina, Winn, and Lewis all failed to collect consecutive hits. I think they should all be released. Oh, and what about Sandoval going 1 for 5?

by Squire_Boone on May 14, 2009 11:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah but

c’mon that’s hardly a fair comparison. Ishikawa has blown ass all season and he has couple good games and now we’re supposed shit all over ourselves?

I don’t know if it’s possible to overreact to the suck of Ishikawa.

.241/.307/.304 out of first base
no home runs in 79 PA and only 4 extra base hits, total
25 Ks in 79 AB (31.6%)
.345 BABIP so it’s not even like he’s particularly unlucky and you’d expect him to be hitting much better. Seriously, HIS BABIP IS .345!
.063 ISOP
.214 EQA
second to last on the team in VORP (right in front of Aurilia)

THIS INCLUDES PITCHERS.

Travis Ishikawa is having a horrible year and, honestly, it’s the middle of May now. He had a couple “nice” games (where he hit a couple of singles… whooo POWER FROM THE FIRST BASEMAN!) but I think it’s getting to the point where we have to do something about our first base production and badly.

Yes

Since Aurilia didn’t make sense at the beginning of the season and has proceeded to bat .174, I would say dumping him is the right call. But not re-signing him in the first place would have been better.

I would send down Velez, DFA Aurilia, and bring up Frandsen and Guzman. But that’s also what I would have started the year with, so obviously I don’t know anything.

Bochy totally blew that scenario. He could have sent Nate to the plate as a bluff, forcing Manuel to go to the lefty (Feliciano) in the bullpen. That way, he at least gets the matchup with Aurilia against a lefty and Rich has at least a chance. If Manuel doesn’t make the move, then he calls back Nate anyway if he was truly not available. At least show you have a pulse, Bochy.

The Giants were not as horrible as the team that went 3-8 to start the season, and not as good as the team that went 15-6 after that.

They have good pitching but their hitting is a disgrace. Right now, they have the third fewest runs scored in the league, but they have benefitted from a hot streak. They will eventually sink to last in the league in runs scored, just as they are last in the NL in:

  • Doubles
  • Home runs
  • RBIs (lots of runs scored via GIDP’s, wild pitches, passed balls and errors)
  • Walks
  • Slugging Percentage
  • OPS
  • Number of Pitches

The Giants’ pythagorean was 16-17 going into tonight. It’s early, but I think that’s about right.
