Who is evaluating these prospects?
Today there were two things I saw that really got under my skin. First we get two hit by Martis, a trade that is now being talked about heavily due to his success. Then I looked in the box score and see Matt Palmer threw a complete game! To top it off it was against one of the best offensive teams in the MLB. So I just wonder who the heck is evaluating this talent? Maritis is 5-0 and Palmer is 4-0 with a 3.38 ERA. These are just a couple guys that we have overlooked so is it poor talent evaluation or what?

I wouldn’t get too bent out of shape just yet. Even if those two guys did the fusion dance (somebody else is wearing the earrings) to become some sort of super pitcher named Mairon Partis who had ther combined major league totals as his major league totals, you wouldn’t have enough of a sample to do anything really worthwhile with.
Palmer was in the minors for eight years. He’s 30 right now and having the first shred of success he’s ever really experienced at a high level. He was a nonprospect and he kind of spent a long time looking like crap.
The Martis trade is a different colored horse of a. But there’s basically a whole thread already devoted to it so I won’t get into it.

Giants Brass gives up on Bill Mueller and he goes on to win a batting title and a World Series! Fire somebody!

well
it was actually moronic to let Mueller go, seeing as he, you know, got on base and stuff.

Martis reminds me of Livan Hernandez. He’s going to be a fatty pretty soon, he already has a decent stick at the plate, and I’m willing to bet his stuff goes to shit as he keeps piling on the pounds.

The fact that Martis is 5-0 is obviously an utterly meaningless stat, and the fact that he just dominated the worst offense in all of the land isn’t the greatest feather in a pitcher’s cap. Yes, Martis is a promising young pitcher and I would love to have him and I hate the Stanton trade and hated it at the time. But Martis has 21 Ks and 17 walks in 41 innings this year, it’s not like we traded Cy Young despite his extremely lucky 5-0 record.

Pretty much
I’m not crying about Martis whatsoever. With the exception of Joe Nathan and Keith Foulke, the Giants have a pretty good track record under Sabean of not really having anything to cry about when it comes to trading away pitchers.

the question with Martis is whether we have five starters better than him. Yeah, we do. Also, do we have better starting prospects than him in the minors? Yes, again. He wouldn’t be here if he was still in the organization and probably never would be.

In his defense…At only 22 years old, he would be one of those prospects still in our minor league system, probably still improving in AAA and waiting for Dirty to to suck late in the season. Would’ve been a nice luxury to have the depth, but who knew? Thats baseball

He just as easily could have blown out his arm had he remained in our system.

Yeah, he’s 5-0 with a worse ERA than Barry Zito. Thanks to McC, I no longer look at W-L as a meaningful stat.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

Livan Hernandez has been pretty good as a pitcher.
by xanthan on May 14, 2009 5:04 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
This is a pretty good comparison.
Livan’s had a pretty good career. Martis in this system may have been expendable, but we probably could have gotten more for him had we waited. As for Palmer, going to the AL is blessing for him. His stuff is much more suited for that league. That being said, this may be looked upon as the best stretch of his career. He’s got Mark Gardner ceiling.

calm down.
If you think Palmer is going to continue with this success, that would make you the third person in this world who does, after Palmer and his mother.

The Stanton trade… sure it’s ugly. But looking back, we had Zimmerman on the board. Hindsight is 100%, but I would say on draft day we had a descent chance of coming away with him. I would give up Martis for a coin flip for Zimmerman, any day.
Maybe I’m phrasing this poorly, it’s early… but this trade wasn’t terrible.

Of course.
It’s our future Giants GM. What did you expect? We can look forward to not making any trades of marginal prospects and filling AA and AAA with washed up journeymen pitchers.

This is actually the second recent fanpost/shot recently complaining about Matt Palmer, so I’ll just quote what I said in the first one:
Of all the reasons to hate on Sabean, this is approximately #73,814, right after his letting Edwards Guzman get away and before him wasting last year’s 46th round pick on Joseph Hainsfurther.

Funny
I had Sportscenter on this morning and they were doing the Angels highlights and they mentioned Matt Palmer and his 4-0 start. I thought to myself no way that’s the same Matt Palmer. But yeah, it’s not going to last for him.
