Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

What does it say about the economic conditions around Detroit and the Tigers that they’re willing to eat $18 million in salary (plus a $3 million buyout) just to ensure his 2010 option doesn’t kick in?

They’re not. The Tigers MAY reduce his playing time (in large part so his options don’t vest), but acquiring him would require a trade and picking up a fair amount of his very big ($18 mil this year w/ option for ’10 and ’11). That is not what this team needs. Ordonez means young developing players – Lewis, Schierholtz – get even less playing/development time. This is a short sighted, play for this year and damn the future thinking.

If he’s cheap, I see no reason not to. Low risk high reward, I guess.

Proud father of Barry Zito. As long as he keeps throwing strikes, that is.

Trade straight up for Rowand?

We can get older AND block Schierholtz at the same time.

Get it done, Giants Brass!
