OT: Help with Logo
My company is doing a logo tournament that ends tomorrow morning. I'm in the process of evaluating the entries, so those of you that are graphic design-minded (Natto, I'm counting on you), please let me know what you think. I may choose to extend the contest- we'll see. Thank you very much.

Existing logo
And website here: www.ybiofuels.org
We decided we need a new one because the existing one a) has gradients, which we are trying to avoid, b) has a boring typeface that is too small in certain media forms, and c) is kind of esoteric and not loved by some of our staff.

interesting
the one that I had previously ranked #1 for awhile had to be disqualified because it looked a lot like a logo from another biodiesel company.

Thank you
12 was an early favorite of mine. The shape of 100 is nice. Curious what you think of these vs. our existing logo.

simple logo that you could use on its own and still be recognized. Also they both incorporate the recycle thing which helps show what your company is about

In complete seriousness
I was actually thinking the same thing.

I was a graphic design student for 1 semester before I learned that I hate(d) most art students / teachers. And I was pretty bad at drawing free hand.
In my photography courses in college, here is my experience:
Student A: the teacher commented on how he made things look easy and how his composition and technique are effortless and unique. Also likes how the student steps outside comfort zone (thing money walking)
Student B: Has some exposure issues (over exposure), limited darkroom capabilities and takes essentially the same pictures all year long.
Student A: Gets B
Student B: Gets A
Why b/c student A is a Science major while Student B is an art major! I know this for fact b/c I snooped finally grades b/c I was upset with my B (final grades were given out on paper in side final portfolio)

I also hate most art students/teachers. At least, the fine art ones. I was cool with my animation cronies.

Agreed about the art students/teachers. As a former engineering major-turned design student, I couldn’t relate at all.

also
somehow I made it through school with mediocre freehand drawing skills. Don’t even ask me to try and draw living things.

I wouldn’t have a problem with most art students I encounter today if any of them had any sort of integrity, artistic or otherwise. When I think of all natural artists I have known in my long life I can count on one hand how many of them nurtured their talent under the tutelage of so-called “higher education.”
I’m actually not very graphic-design minded, but I can pick out the ones I think are pretty. I like #94 and #99 (my #1 and 2 choices respectively.

My order of preference: 101, 12, 99. I like the graphic of 100, but not the font. I definitely prefer the bolder colors of those than the softer colors of, say, 108-112. Easier for the eye to pick up for me.
It's my blarg! Quick Pitch
Yeay, someone agrees with me on 101
I really like the “horn of plenty” look in that one. Also, thanks for the thoughts on colors.

I'm torn between 11 & 12
11 is my favorite typeface of all the choices (in terms of legibility and uniqueness), and I also like the color scheme (the blue looks nice against the green and amber). The logo is nice, but I’m undecided on the arrows. Part of me thinks the arrows make it a bit too busy, but at the same time, part of me thinks they get the recycling message across.
I’m drawn to the logo of #12, because it looks like it would make a nice icon, in terms of simplicity. With the drop and the leaf, it works well. It’s just missing the blue, which seems to brighten things up.
Ideally, I wouldn’t mind seeing some combination of the logo of #12 with the colors and type of #11.

You're talking rankings, not design #s
Gotcha. Thanks for the commentary.

oops, sorry about that
yeah, replace 11 and 12 with 12 and 9

I like 101 (client rank #1), but I’ll introduce some paranoia by saying that the drip of oil leaving the graphic element can be read as oilspill. You want that? Clean it up now and you’ve got a winner. The subtle recycle arrows are a great element.
In general, I’d like the text to be black. Your color choices (green, amber) are going to lead to designs that border on cliche’. Keep those colors in the graphic—don’t overdo the green-osity.
I’m also underwhelmed by the ones you have ranked 2-10. Think about living with these for however long—they may catch your eye initially, but will look soft and tedious long term.
FWIW, I have a degree in fine art photograhy, have studied design, and work as a technical writer/illlustrator (but do not do this type of work).
In closing, if you score one of these designs for $300.00, youre some shrewd businesspeople. Take your savings and update the website—just because you’re green, there’s no reason to shy away from a clean, modern style. After all, what you do is both clean and modern.
