Besides being the sexiest trade ever, the Angels writer suggests a high-upside power hitter that the Giants could maybe get right now. Worth trading Dirty for?

I would trade for Wood pretty danged fast. I think.

by xanthan on May 12, 2009 10:22 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

From the Giants side I would do this in a second. Furthermore, it is a good trade that would help both parties.

On the side: Do people think that Ben Sheets being a free agent will devalue pitching trade chips at the deadline?

No

1. Because there is only one Sheets. [ insert Sean Connery Highland vioce]
2. If he shows up on your division foe you have to seriously consider getting a counter measure to not lose too much ground.

I’d want another, lesser, prospect as well.

Every time I think of B. Wood I remember that we have B. Wood v. 1 in our minors right now, only he’s named Dallas McPherson. The reason the Angels didn’t start Wood when they called him up this season is because he was hitting worse than Macier Izturis. That’s not exactly striking oil for the third base position, and though I think Wood has power potential, I worry that we’d be trading a promising pitcher for Andy LaRoche, AL-version. (I personally think Wood has the glove to not be a defensive black hole at SS, but then what to do with Renteria…) I wouldn’t be sick about it if the trade happened, but I might check the medicine closet to make sure we had Tums. (Both for Wood’s potential disappointment and whoever would be the new fifth starter’s starts…)

But that’s not his whole story, right? In 2008 he had 150 at-bats with an OPS+ of 43.

Proud parent of future rookie of the year, Gerald Posey!

55 bad games (only 38 starts), which included a .243 BABIP. If you want to judge him entirely on that, go ahead. He hasn’t really been given a fair shot so far in his career and he’s certainly shown a hell of a lot of power in his minor league career (power we are sorely lacking in.)

No one would say he’s a sure thing but neither is Sanchez. (I wouldn’t even say it’s a sure thing Sanchez would be a shut down reliever… I mean, obviously he has the stuff for it, but his performance as a reliever hasn’t been that great in the minors. I know there are extenuating circumstances but if we’re going to make excuses for Sanchez’s poor performance, well, Wood has excuses for his too.)

I’m not saying he’s not a sure thing, just that there are a lot of red flags that make me uncomfortable about trading our fifth starter for a guy who I think has an equal chance to wash out based on some of the evidence we’ve seen than become an above-average player many think he’s going to be because of his prospect pedigree.

he was hitting worse than Macier Izturis?

Wood was hitting something like .306/ .393/ .755 in AAA (I’m too lazy to calculate it without the 6 games since his return to AA) and they gave him 9 ABs in MLB. I don’t know where they determined he was hitting worse the Maceir Iztruis (maybe in batting practice).

And neither one is a starter in the majors. I was simply pointing out that while many argue that the Angels “should play Wood OMGBBQ,” there’s actual evidence for why they wouldn’t. Do I think Wood has potential, sure. Do I think the Angels should be batting Izturis third in the DH spot when Wood is on the bench, no. But I get why they’re wary of Wood and are trying to trade him rather than sticking him at third every day and seeing what happens.

The entirety of the “evidence” is 150 ABs last year (all those projections are not evidence of anything). Also, I haven’t heard anything about the Angles trying to trade Wood.

It isn’t certain that Wood can be a major league player

That makes him perfect for this squad. Give him a 1B glove and instant upgrade, methinks.

It would be nice if he could be had for something less than Sanchez. Maybe instead of a “prospect”, another AAAA type that amounts to an upgrade? Like a 1B that owns a bat, f’rinstance.

Put him at third. He’s felt to be a superior defender at third (and even decent at short), which means he would be an upgrade over Sandoval at the hot corner. Move Pabs over to first if the whole point is to get IshRillia out of the lineup.

well, from a non-Giants fan perspective, it isn’t certain that Sanchez can be a major league starting pitcher for an entire season, despite his potential.

by FluLikeSymptoms on May 12, 2009 11:52 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

True.

But Sanchez is pretty certain to be a serviceable – good MLB reliever (well only thing certain about relievers is they eventually blow up but you get my drift). So that means he is already proven to be useful part on a 25 man roster. Wood has proven he is useful utility guy. So what role do you think as greater view just in the near term?

Where is my beer & chili dog?

by daveinexile on May 12, 2009 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s true that if Wood fails to stick as a MLB starter then this would not turn out to be a good trade for the Giants, no matter what happens with Sanchez. My point is just that Sanchez (as much as I love the guy and think he has great potential) is probably not quite as valuable as we all think he is. All trades carry a good deal of risk, but this is a risk that I would take.

by FluLikeSymptoms on May 12, 2009 12:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

We are pretty close.

I would say Wood and PTNL. Both team are getting a lot of upside but with first 100 IP last season Sanchez has proven he can handle, for a reliver, a heavy work load and do well. Wood as not done as much yet ( I agree that is not his fault) but that makes him the bigger risk.

If I Wood, could you?

So, I’m guessing that if this trade was made, and only this trade was made, Sandoval would be our new 1b with Travis as a LH bat off the bench and Wood would be starting 3b. I’m guessing someone from Fresno would be called up to pitch in the 5th spot.

Bonds stands alone.

Pucetas? Maybe Joey Martinez when he gets healthy enough to pitch?

What to do with Travis and filling the 5th spot in the rotation are definitely things that need to be considered before pulling the trigger.

With Pablo and Wood on the corners, does Travis really have a place on this team anymore? Does his approach at the plate really fit as a bench player? IMO, if this deal is done, you either have to DFA Travis or try to move him in a “my crap for your crap” type of deal.

Martinez would be a viable option for the rotation were he healthy. Since that is not the case, are we all really going to live with some Misch level guy taking the hill every 5th day? Does Wood’s bat make that palatable to anyone?

To summarize: Does a Wood for Sanchez deal really make the Giants better overall?

Considering Wood’s age, I would say it makes us better overall for the next few years. Wood could develop into a Matt Williams kind of 3B, which would be nice. I like Sanchez, but we don’t know if he will ever reach his potential. Plus, I always thought Sanchez would be the expendable trading chip by the time Alderson and Bumgarner reached the majors.

I said "could," not will

I just thought of the first 3B that came mind who had power, but didn’t draw many walks. I was too lazy to look up a more accurate reference point. Do you have a better one?

by Squire_Boone on May 12, 2009 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can agree with that.

Wood is versatile enough that even if he never fully blossoms but does prove he can hit MLB pitching ona regular bases he could also serve has a production "floor" almost the entire infield. That in itself I important because then the Front office should then only sign a scrub inf as a back up to like a 1 year deal.

I see all potential trades from a long-term perspective

I’m really not a believer in the Giants contending this year, so how it effects the 2009 team isn’t a great concern to me. I think from a long term perspective if you can get a 3B (one of the organization’s major holes) who is controllable for 5 years, that has more relative value than a 5th starter, mostly because we can more easily replace a 5th starter either internally or with an inexpensive free agent.

As for what to do with Ishikawa? Who gives a rat’s ass, just release him.

by FluLikeSymptoms on May 12, 2009 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with the long term perspective

I am on record here (a couple of times) with my prediction of a 79 win season from the Giants this season so I have no expectations of contending. My concern with this deal is risk. What is it about Wood that makes anyone think we would even want to control him for 5 years? As Roto pointed out below, his projections are pretty “meh” with the potential to be better than that. Is that worth a serviceable lefty reliver and a potential useful starter?

Overall, I am on the fence about this deal which probably means it is fair to both sides. I would be willing to take a chance on Wood but I would wince while handing over Sanchez.

I also agree with your take on Travis. He would be released.

by Lars The Wanderer on May 12, 2009 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it would be a good trade for both sides

Of course I would rather trade Sanchez for Evan Longoria or David Wright, but in the real world I think this is a good trade. As I said above, this trade would carry a good deal or risk (as all trades do) but I think this would be a risk worth taking.

by FluLikeSymptoms on May 12, 2009 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It might hurt in the short term. It will probably take a while for Wood to get comfortable at the big league level, but once he does, he would be a solid 3B going into the future. Plus, Alderson could be in the big leagues come August.

Taking a look at Wood’s PECOTA projections, there’s a TON of Pedro Feliz in there. A lot of .230/.300/.415 with a below-average glove at SS. His breakout and improve rates are pretty high, though.

Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...

by rotorueter on May 12, 2009 12:26 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, trading for Wood definitely hinges on how optimistic one is he will improve.

by Squire_Boone on May 12, 2009 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

ZIPS, CHONE and PECOTA all have him at or below a .300 on-base percentage. Projections aren’t the be-all-end-all, but that’s a little scary…

Oh yea, in that scenario the team needs about 4 sticks with reasonable OBP and speed from SS, 2nd and the 3 OF spots or else there are going to be frequent and large scoring droughts.

Tango’s The Book says a fast, non disruptive bass runner adds about 14 points to a wOBA to the batter but without players to routinely get on base your line up losses that "bump". Other team’s starters would staying in the game longer because they we would probably be throwing lower pitcher counts (more solo or 2 run homers, and a solo HR ,without nibbling, is the best kind of HR to have to give up) but if your line up only gets that from 2-3 spots (as long a the pitcher doesn’t go into nibble mode) it is still less pitchers and stressful situations.

Yes that 14 point “bump” is part of why Lewis is not the problem in my eyes but that is a differnt topic.

I Would Pass Now But Reconsider In The Offseason

My thinking is that we should see what we have in Jesus Guzman before we do this. I also think it is more likely that Sanchez will be more valuable to the Giants playoff chances this year (admittedly small but still too big to ignore) then Woods would be.

by giantsrainman on May 12, 2009 5:02 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Eh. I would be leery of such a trade. While I’m not sold on Sanchez at all long term, I’m equally not sold on Wood being able to hit at the ML level….

I would think we would be able to get better for Sanchez, but perhaps maybe not. It’s a toss-up really.

by Hobbes2d on May 12, 2009 5:03 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't consider Sanchez all that expendable anymore.

1) We’re not going to get value for him now.

2) The Kind of hitters the Giants need will probably take a package of Cain+prospect, at which point we’ll need Sanchez (at least until Alderson and Bumgarner are ready).

The premise of the thread is that we could get Brandon Wood, which would be value.

A) I think Wood’s a product of Utah

B) I don’t think the Angels would do it.

But then why aren't they letting him start?

Keeping him in the minors implies that Angels brass doesn’t imply that he has much value. He has massive upside, but he needs to show something at the MLB level.

They’re keeping him in the minors in favor of Maicer Izturis and Erick Aybar. Not stud prospects by any means.

I wouldn't do this trade

I don’t want to go back to the last few years where we didn’t have a 5th starter that could be relied on. It wasn’t pretty. Sanchez is a better option than anything we have right now. And even though Sanchez might not be a top-flight starter, I think his value now, and in the future, is higher than Wood’s. Stability of the rotation also helps the bullpin, too. If we are going to give up on Sanchez I would rather package him with a prospect or two (none of our top 5) and get a more proven player.

Does anyone like that Ben Zobrist guy? I don’t know much about him but Rays don’t seem to use him often and he can hit some. Just an idea.

Wood’s career is probably going to look a lot like Juan Uribe’s or Pedro Feliz’s, with a few more home runs and a little less defense; but that does have some value. Just don’t think you’re getting a potential star.

Sarcastic About Davis

Real about wanting a more established player.

I’d be willing to give up more for someone who both filled an immediate need as well as took care of a position of need for the next several years.

Like Chris Davis… lol.

Why Not? They have Smoak waiting in the wings… Sanchez + Alderson for Davis?
