Just got back upstairs from the postgame clubhouse after the Giants’ 13-inning victory. Everyone was weary but very happy to clinch a series and a winning road trip. But Brian Wilson was not.

A friend sent Wilson a photo of Dodgers third baseman Casey Blake mocking the crossed-arms gesture that the Giants’ All-Star closer makes when he finishes off a victory. The gesture is symbolic of Wilson’s faith and it’s also a signal to his late father. The background on Wilson’s gesture can be found here.

Several veterans approached Wilson and appeared to be trying to calm him down. Strangely enough, Blake hit the tying home run off Wilson in the 12th before Randy Winn’s two-run single in the 13th put the Giants ahead again. Wilson got three quick ground outs in the bottom of the inning to finish the game.

When asked what was upsetting him, Wilson grudgingly showed the photo on his phone to myself and Henry Schulman of the SF Chronicle. (It showed Blake seated in the dugout with his arms crossed.) He didn’t want to say anything, though. We asked if Blake’s gesture was an affront to his faith. "Yeah, and my dad," Wilson said.

I asked if he’d remember the next time he faced Blake. Wilson shrugged and clamped his mouth shut. From the next locker over, Jeremy Affeldt said, "Blake knows what he did."

By the time we hustled over to the Dodgers clubhouse, Blake was showered and gone.

Clearly, this will be worth watching when these two teams meet again in August.

This reaction is completely asinine.

Yes, Blake was an ass. So what’s the response to an ass? Ignore it and be the bigger person. If you show that it bothers you, then you’re giving that person an awful lot of power over you. Don’t be surprised if he (or other opponents) break out the mocking X-move to Wilson when he is on his way into a game, now that we know it really rattles him. It’s ridiculous to give opponents that much power over you.

As always and in everything, the best revenge is: Win. Be better than the other guy. Act like it doesn’t matter. It shouldn’t anyway. And if it really IS a sore spot for Wilson, then why does he do that stuff in public and expose himself to the mocking? I know what to reveal to others about myself and what not to— I don’t want to give very many people the power to get in my head and rattle me. Wilson and only Wilson gave Blake the power to rattle him. Yes, Blake is an ass and a dick— that’s standard for a dodger & for someone with two first names. But who gave that dickish ass the power to hurt Wilson? Wilson did.

Finally, who the hell are the people talking about hitting Blake in the head? Are you people nuts? How infantile — no, how small are you? Putting physical injury on a person for an insult? How small are your penises? good god.

Insults like this deserve a violent response

Only cowards and pushovers let people get away with insults like this. Blake basically insulted Wilson’s dead father … in many cultures that’d be grounds for murder.

Winning is the best revenge but wins can’t be guaranteed, especially since Blake plays on a better team. Getting hit by a baseball anywhere but on the head won’t hurt as bad as this kind of insult; therefore the only way to reliably get him back is to him in the head.

Has nothing to do with penis size. If you insulted my dead father I’d try to hurt you too, that’s how the world works.

This could be a spiritual challenge for Brian Wilson...

Since Brian is publicly a vocal follower of Jesus Christ and has stated that his after game hand/fist gesture is symbolic of his faith, I think Blake’s antics are an opportunity for Brian to put his money where his mouth is and show Blake he is different than people who don’t profess Christ.

That would mean turning the other cheek when offended. If Blake sincerely apologizes for insulting his faith and the memory of his deceased father, Brian should forgive him and move on. Even if he doesn’t apologize, Brian still needs to forgive and get past this and “not let the sun go down on his anger.” If he chooses not to forgive, it’s just as Mayor of 311 stated, Blake has the power over him, as would anyone else who would mock Brian’s tribute.

I think it would severely damage Brian’s testimony as a Christian to bean Blake out of vengeance, as Christians believe that vengeance is the Lords. The Bible also teaches to love your enemies by killing them with kindness. “On the contrary, therefore, if your enemy is hungry, give him food; if he is thirsty, quench his thirst. For by doing this you will be heaping burning coals upon his head.” —Romans 12:20
(Not to say this would happen, but could you imagine the stupified look on Casey Blake’s face if Brian actually approached Blake first and took the high road to reconciliation?)

Whether or not any of the other Giants pitchers feel the same way is yet to be played out.

Why do you feel the need to bring rational thought into this? We’re angry! We want blood! Remember when Jeff Kent got drilled? That was awesome! Why do you have to rain on our parade with your “being a good person” and “logic”…ugh.

I would enjoy seeing Blake get drilled. I would not enjoy seeing Blake get in Wilson’s head.

by Missing Barry on May 11, 2009 9:20 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You miss the point...

You’re thinking rationally like most of the world would think and feel a payback drilling will solve everything.

If Brian’s dad is dead, and he was also a man of faith, he would not want to see his son go off on Blake if it ruined his testimony as a Christian.

The best way for Wilson to get back at Blake is to be a bigger man and move on, therefore further showing the world what a arrogant dirtbag Blake truly is.

The best way for Wilson to get back at Blake is to be a bigger man and move on therefore further showing the world what a arrogant dirtbag Blake truly is. because it’s the right thing for him to do.

If we’re going to take the high road, and Wilson should, especially because as has been pointed out this really gets to him, then it should be the real high road, especially if Wilson is mature in his religion. (I’ve no doubt he’s sincere, but maturity … well, I watched “Life of Brian” and enjoyed it, but, y’know…)

A payback drilling, especially a mid-90’s heater to the ribs, would entertain me. Baseball is entertainment. I look forward to it.

by Missing Barry on May 11, 2009 10:24 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

In all fairness

I don’t actually want him to hit Blake in the head. I just want Blake to have the terror of having 100 mph fastballs coming straight at his dome and watching him fall to the dirt. It’s not actually entertaining when a player, even a dodger player gets hit in the head.

I was actually thinking something like Wilson throws at Blake’s head; Blake charges the mound and Wilson socks him in the jaw. End of Story. Then we can return to our regularly scheduled rivalry.

So every player in the league can have their own gesture. Doesn’t matter if it is for their father, mother, wife, children or siblings. If it is good enough for BWillie then it is good enough for the other 800 MLB players.

Each player gets to choose their gesture. Can be done anytime anywhere. No restrictions, Be creative. Be unique. Score grading for creativity, uniqueness and most inspirational. Each gesture will be emailed so all players know and will not duplicate or offend one another. Please register your gestures with the MLBPA or Scott Boras.

oh, please. There’s nothing wrong with Wilson’s gesture, and he does it AFTER the game. It’s fair to celebrate when the game is over. Every team celebrates after it wins the game. Just because his celebration is different than what others do, he shouldn’t do it? I can understand the anger at the Mets when they dance after a homerun during the game, and when a pitcher pumps his fist and celebrates after a strikeout, but after a game you’re allowed to celebrate. Casey Blake made a fool of himself by mocking Wilson not only because he was ignorant as to what it meant, but because he did it before the game was over and his team wound up losing. And who was the winning pitcher, Casey?

Actually, it would be less disrespectful if he did it...

… back in the clubhouse.

… in the bullpen before coming into the game.

… just a quick one as he takes the mound.

… any other circumstance besides that the other team just lost (ever notice that he only does it after the other team loses? What, his god and his father don’t deserve honoring when he loses? This actually shows what bullshit all these public displays of religiosity are. Why does someone who loses the Grammy award never ‘thank god for the great career and the success I’m having’?)

Since the last All Start break the Giants have won 4 of the 7 series with the Bums and tied another. That 4-2-1. We now know and it is obvious the aged veterans in LA know it else Blake would not have done that any were but inside the club house. It is in their head. The Giants are treating them like this with an offense that is a joke and a defense that is somewhere between average and good. Either of those 2 facets improve and they have to feel like there are going to get beat like the proverbial red headed step child. Acts like Blake’s tell us that their leaders are hearing footsteps and they are afraid. Savor it my fellow brethren because the Orange & Black Horde is beginning to be feared again.

I like Wilson, blown saves and all, but if he wasn’t wearing the French Vanilla I’d probably feel the same way about him that Casey Blake apparently does. Some of us here feel that way anyway cough jponry cough ;)

So Blake may be kind of a douche, as all Dodgers are, and he’s guilty of premature taunting. But since he probably didn’t know what Wilson’s crossed-arm gesture meant, he should apologize directly for the offense and Wilson should forget about the incident and focus on hitting his spots when he’s on the mound.

Besides, the best revenge is living well beating the Dodgers.

If you hit a home run and do so much as look at the pitcher funny, people’s blood starts boiling. To hit a home run and mock the pitcher (and being ignorant enough to not know the meaning of what you’re mocking), and you’re really walking on thin ice. So… all the macho unwritten rules in baseball, plus the douchebaggery of Casey Blake, equals 99 on the chin in my book. The story just got picked up on SI’s Truth & Rumors, so it might get a day or two more play.

Rereading the redacted version that SI presented, I got the feeling what I’ve been talking about, and where the conversation has gone, namely his religion, isn’t what really got Wilson. The word used was “distraught”. That’s a very personal response. I think it might be more about the father aspect. Wilson might have realized what the Mayor pointed out: he made himself vulnerable by wearing his father’s memory on his sleeve, and he was the one who put his dad’s memory up for (most certainly) unintentional mockery. Wilson strikes me as a naif; I followed his Twitter and watched ‘Life of Brian’ last night, and under the testosterone bluster is a child. He didn’t get that his tweets would get him in trouble and cast doubt on the image he has of himself or wants to project. He probably had no clue that another player would make fun of his gesture; or if he did, that it would upset him so. It’s interesting to see if he changes as a result of these public incidents. I enjoy him greatly, dirty saves and all.

Wilson sucks, I’m tired of his act,, I get it, he loves jesus and his dad died.. First things first, if a Giant had done that to a Dodger we’d all be pumped, that being said, Blake and probably others are a little tired of seeing his little arm-X thing and his Rickey Vaughn clown hair, all this comming from a mediocre closer who likes to bring attention to himself. I think if he were REALLY one of Jesus’s good little soldiers, he would’nt be Tweetering lies about how tough he is, that he beat up some guy cuz he made fun of his haircut while flirting with his girlfriend at a bar. We all know Christians don’t lie, especially about beating another mans face in over a haircut. He does the little X thing cuz he is a cocky prick, and I’d be OK with that if he were good.

No, I wouldn’t. I mentioned this to a Dodger friend who hadn’t heard about what happened and he said it was adouchy thing for Blake to do if he did, in fact know the story behind the gesture. I doubt Blake reads Bay Area papers.

I’ll bet Blake had no idea the meaning behind it. The first time I saw Wilson do it, I thought it was a “game over” gesture. I’ll bet in the next day or so, Blake apologizes for the unintended slight and it’s all put to bed. Wilson sounds more hurt than pissed.

by Goofus on May 11, 2009 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good grief

That’s a lot of anger over a baseball player. Especially a closer – that position tends to have a more intense, energetic type of personality than your average ballplayer.

I tried to avoid jumping into this, but some are bringing up Wilson’s hypocrisy regarding his religion, and that’s an inane argument. From my limited knowledge of all things religious, we are all considered sinners in the eyes of God. So expecting Wilson to exceed those expectations might be setting the bar a tad bit high, dontcha think?

And I doubt you know Wilson good enough to make a determination of whether he’s one of “Jesus’s good little soldiers”. Feel free to base your opinion of him on his Twittering, which appeared to be about 90% b.s. and 10% real.

Anyways, I agree with Goofus – it sounds like what Blake did was out of character, and probably just came in the heat of battle. One or both of these guys will probably take the high road, and that will be the end of it.

Question: What kind of bear is best?

by otis29 on May 11, 2009 4:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I seriously doubt Blake knew that was a gesture to Wilson’s dad. He was mocking Wilson the person, not his faith or his father. If Wilson wants to brush him back for mocking HIM then I can see his reasoning. But he shouldn’t expect every ballplayer to know what that stupid motion stands for. It’s not like he’s pointing up at the sky like Barry where it’s an obvious gesture to someone who has passed.
