Appreciation for the Regulars

I am a huge Giants fan.  I watch every game and read every post game wrap.  I try to study everything I can on the Giants because during the summer, they are the only thing that matters to me.  My life from April to October (hopefully) is the San Francisco Giants.

That is why I came here.  I needed more Giants, and a blog devoted to them seemed like a logical destination.  I joined the site and posted occasionally, often times to harsh criticism.  I quickly realized just how shallow my baseball knowledge was, and how flawed my opinions on the team really were.  I got intimidated and stopped posting.  I decided to just read for the time being, trying to pick up little bits of knowledge that I could show off to my fellow Giants fans at school.  People at school were impressed with what I had learned from MCC, so I read more and more hoping to one day acquire the knowledge necessary to post with confidence on this site.

But what I came to realize is that my fanhood and baseball knowledge will only go so far.  As much as I wanted to be the person people turned to for statistical analysis, my mind would not allow it.  I could not find the time or the energy to keep up with the rest of the regular McCoven.

So it is in this Fanpost (sorry if this does not warrant one) that I say thank you to all of the McCovey Chronicle regulars.   Thank you for spreading your knowledge to us mortals, and non-computers (xanathan).  Thank you for creating an entertaining and hilarious place to get away from the everyday grind of work and school.  Thank you for allowing me to become a bigger Giants fan than I thought possible, even if it only one tenth of you guys.

And finally, on behalf of the weekly and monthly posters, I say thank you for creating the best community of Giants fans on the web.  What you guys don't realize is that most Giants fans I know come here first to get the analysis because they know you guys know your stuff the best.  Even if we annoy you with our incompetent baseball knowledge, put up with us, because we sure as hell appreciate you.

PS: Thanks for also making me realize there are always bigger nerds in the world.

Dear PA Warrior

go back to reading.

just kidding! Great post and I find myself baffled by some of the knowledge on this site. These people are the people i want around me at a game 100%.

I’d even let natto touch me, just not my bathing suit area.

As crazy a sports fan I am, I can honestly say that this community has vaulted Giants baseball past Warriors hoops, Niners football, and Stanford sports to my #1 favorite. The discourse, humor, and personalities on here have made the season infinitely more enjoyable, and I feel as though I’ve just felt the tip of the iceberg. I mean, I haven’t even met any of you yet. Maybe that’ll change this season!

Despite some comments towards me and the ribbing I get for my hatred towards Kuiper, I have fun here. It’s really the decent message board out there anymore. I’ve only met one person here and I knew him before I arrived here. It’s possible we’ve past by each other at the ball park since I attend on average 60-65 games per year and I like to walk around the park before the game starts. I enjoy my relatively short stay here (and laugh at some of the pictures some of you post here). Hope it continues into the future.

I don’t know who the one person you met on this site is, but he sounds like an incredibly wonderful person. I think you’re a better person for meeting him, and this person definitely makes this world a place where we should all feel privileged to be living in.

I appreciate that the stat-erific folks here post their gibberish, explain it when asked, and seem to realize the difference between stratomatic and the real thing. The non-stat folks appreciate the heavy analysis that appears here, the ex-ballplayers are cool, even the odd sportswriter pops in.

Also learning a lot from the rules nerds- in the arcade on opening day I was assured several times that Brian Wilson had a save opportunity, and I sat smugly and quietly in my McCovenness, knowing that I was so much incredibly superiror to them.

the best thing about this blog is when you disagree about things, almost all of the posters show each other respect when they’re presenting their points. There’s none of that “I’m right, you’re an idiot” responses that you see on so many other boards. I’ve even seen boards where they’re threatening each other’s lives. It’s good and even constructive when you present a point and people attempt to show you why you’re wrong, ( in my case Matt Cain) instead of just dismissing you as an a-hole.

I guess I could be considered a regular… but I’d like to echo the sentiments expressed here. I often kind of wonder where I’d be with regards to baseball if I didn’t have this crazy site to talk about it on. A lot of teams have good blogs, yeah, but it seems like most of them don’t have the same atmosphere MCC does. Also, I feel like most sports fan sites on the internet aren’t nearly as welcoming to girls, but really, it’s never been weird here at all. So yeah, I love you guys.

For me, the variety of personalities and the level of knowledge here really make this community stand out. It’s made up of many folks from all over the state and country that have one common thread; we all love baseball, and Giants baseball in particular. I have been posting here for about two years on a semi regular basis and look to this board for my Giants "fix" during Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall.

This board reminds me of that quirky corner bar we all know. Once you establish the fact that you are not a complete idiot, you can post, comment and converse about everything from Giants Baseball to movies and your favorite recipes.

You know, not only does this site increase my appreciation of the game and my ability to deal with crappieness on the Giants’ part, it’s also good for my marriage! Now that I have y’all to talk to, I don’t have to pester my wife with anecdotes about Joe Roa or complaints about the goddamn umpire or long rants about why Fred Lewis is so much better than Dave Roberts or what-have-you. She certainly appreciates that.

Also, let me say:

I’m not a stathead, and never will be, if only because my math skillz are terrible. I only made it to Algebra II in high school, did poorly at that (and worse at geometry), and avoided math like the plague in college. Plus, I’m a a humanities kind of guy, and while I appreciate stats as a means of player evaluation, it’s the narratives and the stories of the game that I really care about.

However, I’m really glad that y’all statheads are here and are doing what you’re doing. While I may not always understand what the hell you’re talking about, I do appreciate the information and the perspective, and if nothing else, the McCoven have helped get me up to speed on some of the less crazy-out-there stuff like OPS+ and BABIP, which are certainly handy things to know.

And, further jponry’s point, I’m really glad that we have so many awesome & smart female regulars. In the past, obsessive as I am about baseball, I’ve often avoided forums and whatnot dedicated to the game, because often, sports-related discussion is a bit of a boy’s club and takes on a macho bullshit locker room mentality that drives me nuts. I’m really glad that’s not the case here. At least among our The Notebook-watching, cat-owning, gay wussy contingent.

This x109 million.

Here I feel that I can actually have a conversation about baseball, life, whatever with people who (usually) have rational, thought out ideas about what is going on. Seriously, this community is great and I’m proud to be a part of it.

You are all very, very welcome.

Adoptive parent of Noah Lowry. Because he was awesome once, and, goddammit, he shall be awesome once again!

I hope.

I like this place

And all the personalities…

Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all

If Dustin Pedroia played in Seattle, not many people would be talking about him.

Your welcome!

Oh wait you mean you didn’t mean me and my 100 comments? I’ll just go back to my corner then.

In all seriousness, I love this place. The threads are hillarious, and the jokes are intelligent. Especially the ones about buttpee. I think the moment I realized McC was the best came when someone made a Modest Proposal joke. I didn’t know people on the internet could be that intelligent.

Speaking as a non-stathead semi-regular, I certainly hope newcomers don’t feel too intimidated to the point where they’re genuinely afraid to post. I appreciate what everyone here has to bring to the table so long as they can string together at least a couple of coherent sentences in the English language. Or Japanese. Or Spanish.

I only appreciate posters when they make pithy sayings in Esperanto.

Kits, if you’re not a regular I’m not sure who is.

This place rocks

I guess I’m a regular. I’m not a stat-head, but do my best to understand what the numbers mean and appreiciate the geeks’ patience with numbskulls like me. I also appreciate the knowledge I’ve gained here over the years.

Although our fearless leader deserves most of the credit for this place being so great, it’s certainly the entire community that makes it special. The knowledge, the humor and comradeship found in this virtual lounge is rare indeed.

Although we might have our differences at times, I don’t think any of us would trade McC for the world.

Goofus would take a bullet for ANY of you!

Not in the chest or anything, but like in the arm or leg, so long as it’s only kind of a flesh wound. And probably not a real bullet… But he’d do it!

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

This thread about “regulars”. Once your post count reached 20,000, you went from “regular” to " “not him again”.

Yea. Grant’s good, but he’s been slipping lately. At least we’ve got the community too.

(I’m kidding of course. Grant’s slipping and the community sucks.)

As a newcomer....

my rah rah comments have been questioned at times but then I just take it all in stride (losers). I like this site as long as we keep talking about food, drink, and oh ya…. the Giants. One of the features that doesn’t get a lot of press that I like is Minor Lines…. keep up the good work SteveS. As long as we have Bochy and the gritty vets to bitch about I am happy as a harbor seal in heat. Go G’s….

Actually, minor lines gets quite a lot of mentions. (And it certainly got rec’d a lot last year). I believe ESPN.com even mentioned them (or some big news service)

Also a newcomer (at least as a poster)

and very happy i found this place. Took me from being a complete baseball newbie imbecile, to someone that can talk giants baseball with anyone.

I first realized i would be back here often after the armando/zito images that had me on the floor -

and –

so, thank you all. thank you for providing entertainment when I’m watching the games at home, and for filling my baseball needs from October-April.
