Joe Martinez Update Thread

I don't really need to say very much about the point of this thread. I think we're all worried about Joe Martinez, and I think we can only benefit by having a well-defined place where we can go to post updates on his condition and find them when they get posted. I think this is an agreeable alternative to randomly checking fifteen different places over and over again in case somebody creates a fanshot or posts a link in the gameday thread or lets us know anywhere else.

If it happens, let us know here. Until then, let's just continue to wish him the best.

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

The whole deal with Natasha Richardson really brought the sneaky head injuries to light.

When he was able to walk off, I assumed it wasn’t too bad (just bruise/cut). Then Amy G’s report kind of freaked me out. I don’t think the baseball world could handle much more after the adenhart tragedy.

Hard to blame her. If she was in the dugout, she was like 60 feet away and saw and heard it all. The replay was sick when they played it with sound. It was loud when it hit his head.

She just sounded really worried, and said they didn’t know how he was and hoped he would be ok (maybe I misinterpreted her, but I thought she was saying it was possible he wouldn’t end up ok), and he was going to the hospital.

Not to say there’s no possibility that it’s serious, because of course there always is. But I’m pretty sure Amy G. would do her best to make a papercut sound as dramatic as possible.

Well… if he got hit in the forehead/temple and was bleeding from the nose, one could jump to the conclusion that there were broken bones and big problems going on in the sinus cavity area – but I’m no doctor.

It’s good to hear he wasn’t bleeding from the nose.

If Martinez wasn’t bleeding from the nose, why were they holding a cloth to said nose as he walked off the field?

Precautionary?

Not for him, necessarily, but if they so much as suspect that the nose might bleed from something like that, the last thing anybody needs is a bunch of red contrasting very nicely with those beautiful cream jerseys all over TV.

Well, not the last thing anybody needs, clearly, but it could have been a consideration.

Cloth to the nose?

It looked as if the blood from his head had dripped down and off his nose.
It’s possible that they asked Joe if he was bleeding from the nose, but he didn’t know.. So yeh.. Could have been precautionary.. Or kinda like “we don’t know what we’re doing until we get him checked out” type of thing.

by AmorVincitOmnia on Apr 10, 2009 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions

These are both eminently good signs. The temple is pretty much the worst place to get hit on the whole body. The concern there is, well, I’m not gonna say it, but it’s terrible. So avoiding the temple (the pterion and the middle meningeal artery) is very good. And a bloody nose honestly probably wouldn’t be a big deal, but the less traumatic injury the better. If he’s as alert as everyone says, I’m very hopeful.

If their waiting till the AM for a CAT, that suggests they ran an MRI to look for any intracranial bleeding (called a hematoma) and saw none, or very little. The fact that he’s cognizant suggests that he does not have severe bruising of the brain matter (a cerebral contusion or traumatic brain injury).

As much as I want some news that he’s OK, I think we all just have to send him our best thoughts as we go to bed and hope to hear the best news possible when we awake.

The park was pretty empty, the crowd was pretty quiet, the crack o f the bat was loud, and the strike to the head (above the right ear from my vantage point in FC 108) was just above the ear, and loud—like a champagne cork.

The stadium froze. Cameron was so shaken, the G’s 7 fielders surrounded and consoled him at 2nd base. Bengie couldn’t even go out to the mound for a long period of time—he stood with the home plate umpire, and looked like he couldn’t hold back the tears every time he tried to walk to the mound.

From Henry Schulman on SFGate:
UPDATE: Martinez was taken to St. Francis Memorial Hospital for evaluation, including a CT scan. Manager Bruce Bochy said Martinez was coherent and knew where he was.

He had a severe cut to his face and a lot of swelling. Obviously, all the talk in the clubhouse after the game was about Martinez, not the win.

The players dressed quickly and left for the airport and a trip to San Diego. They hoped to get an update when they landed.

I can tell you several players were still shaken up 20 minutes later, and that includes Cameron, who initially was too distressed to talk but later offered his best wishes to Martinez.

I keep thinking of other scary moments like this. J.T. Snow getting hit in the face by a Ranndy Johnson fastball is the obvious one for Giants fans, but I was also reminded of an incident several years ago when Hee-Seop Choi, going after an infield fly, tripped backwards over Kerry Wood (who had ducked down trying to get out of his way) and landed on the back of his head.

I also thought of Dickie Thon, who was a promising young infielder back in the early 80s who got beaned in the face with a fastball. He came back and had a pretty long career, but I think his eyesight was damaged and he was never the same player again.

You get to thinking about these things, and baseball can seem pretty scary.

I was at that game and it was awful to watch – Albert Pujols hit the liner and he was pretty shaken up at 1st. When the game resumed, he eventually made his way to home where he slid into Josh Bard and either tore the catcher’s ankle or turned it badly (shaky memory) which sent Bard out for a long time. Pujols was a one-man wrecking crew that inning.

Hopefully Joe is okay, and can get back on the field before this really gets into his head. I believe it was Robby Thompson who got beaned quite a few years ago, and insisted that he get into the last game of the season so he wouldn’t have to spend the offseason thinking about the pitch that hit him. I hope that Joe can get back soon and not have to deal with the baggage.

I also hope Mike Cameron is okay. I’ve never read a bad thing about him, and on of the last shots of him on TV this afternoon, his hand were visabley shaking while trying to put his batting helmet back on.

First and foremost, wishing good thoughts for Joe Martinez and that the encouraging reports from the hospital remain that way when we all wake up on Friday.

If the results of the CT scan are positive, anyone have an idea what’s the recovery time for his facial injuries? Do you suspect he’ll go on the 15-day DL tomorrow or could he be back sooner? I’m wondering whether the hardest part of the recovery will be, as some people are speculating, psychological — it might be hard for him to get back on the mound for a while after having something like this happen. I know I’d be pretty spooked.

There was some pitcher, who’s name escapes me now, who took a linedrive off the face, and he was permanently gun shy. It was painfully sad to see hm pitch, because he would pull up lame out of his follow through ruining everything. Yeah, the CT really wasn’t for broken bones. The big worry was an intracranial hematoma (as discussed above) or cerebral edema. If there were broken bones, he’s gonna need surgery. Some resources I just checked out suggest a recovery time as short as two weeks (I’d at least double that given the violent nature of Joe’s profession).

At this point, I think it’s a safe bet he goes on the 15-day DL as I’d be shocked if he didn’t have a concussion.

This by far is the most disturbing thing I have seen in baseball. Like everybody else, wishing the best for Joe and his family.

I dont mean to bring just a negative vibe, but I know somebody personally where this has happened. I live over in Australia and a guy from our club was playing college ball and took a ball to the head. Never played again and never been same person since. Spent a few weeks in a coma. So I really do feel for Joe and his family, and will pray for him until he comes out and throws again.

Him being awake and with it is very promising news, hopefully tomorrow after more tests he can be released. Maybe come and throw out a first pitch which im sure will give everybody something more….

Come-backers

They’re about as scary as anything in baseball. After you throw a pitch, you’re totally vulnerable and often not in a good position to field a ball. Even scarier when you think about leagues where aluminum/composite bats are used. I wonder if there will be a movement for pitchers to wear helmets like the base coaches now do.

A few weeks ago, I was throwing BP to the team I coach in a batting cage and didn’t get my rib cage completely behind the protective screen. Of course, the 14-year-old I was pitching to hit one right back at me and hit me hard. I hate to think what would have happened if it hit me in the head.

Felicia Day (of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog) is at a Q&A session at some comics convention, and some of the fans notice her when someone else is answering a question, with both hands in her lap under her table, and she’s smiling something wicked and kind of bouncing around.

Plus he reports three “hairline fractures” of the skull not requiring surgery. Any insights based on that info that the medically informed folks here can offer?

by sularz on Apr 10, 2009 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, in a person Joey’s age, complete healing without surgery should be expected in 6 weeks to 3 months (it depends on the severity of the injury as well as Joey’s healing ability). The real issue is that there really isn’t a good way for Joey to protect the affected area with shielding equipment the way a batter can. So the bones are going to have to be completely healed before he gets into games again. It’s good that he’s avoiding surgery – just because surgery itself is very dangerous, but the recovery might take a little longer. He’ll be on a lot of anti-inflammatories and analgesics to promote healing, but this is the kinda thing where the doctors aren’t gonna let him back into games until he is 100% healed.

I once had a head injury in junior high (playing soccer in PE, I got knocked over and hit my head into a tree stump) and when I was still dizzy the next day they gave me head x-rays to check for a possible hairline fracture. I didn’t end up having one, though, so I can’t tell you what it’s like or what the recovery is.

From the Giants....

San Diego, CA – San Francisco Giants’ pitcher Joe Martinez suffered a concussion and three small hairline fractures on the right side of his head after getting struck by a batted ball yesterday in the game vs. the Milwaukee Brewers. Martinez is currently resting at a San Francisco hospital, where he is in stable and alert condition and is expected to make a full recovery. He will remain in the hospital for observation over the next three to four days.

Due to the injury, the club has placed Martinez on the 15-day Disabled List and purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Justin Miller.

On a heartfelt note, the Giants and Joe would like to express their appreciation to the hundreds of well wishes and prayers by fans since last night.

Actually, it’s probably more or less this. There’s always the potential that his concussion is more severe than they realize and the injury was so traumatic that they’re going to take every precaution possible. And swelling could happen, though it’s extremely unlikely. Joey’s getting the best medical care possible right now (my school is actually partnered with St. Mary’s and it’s a very good hospital) and there really isn’t a reason to discharge him until they’re sure of how he’s doing.

Just saw this posted on Schulman’s blog @ SFGate.com
Head trainer Dave Groeschner just arrived in San Diego from San Francisco and reported that pitcher Joe Martinez has “a little bit of internal bleeding. That’s why we’re being cautious,” and why Martinez is going to stay hospitalized for a few days.

Doctors will rescan his head tomorrow and keep an eye on the bleeding.

Groeschner said there is no treatment for the hairline fractures or the bleeding other than rest. They should resolve themselves.
