Anyone know what the rotation is going to be. I am going to go to a couple of the games in Portland this weekend. I would like to avoid an Ortiz start.

Why Two Catchers?
The big club doesn’t need two, this will just make our minor league catchers soft and week.
I got the press release on the Fresno roster in my email today and it seems Sadler has been added to the rotation. I don’t know if this is the rotation order, but the press release says Pucetas, Hammond, Kinney, Sadowski, and Sadler.

Lordy. I remember attending a Fresno game and being thoroughly impressed with him, then when he made it up to the bigs…well, not so much.

Right?
I’m looking at that infield, and I can see Rohlinger and Downs surprising the hell out of everyone. If they both hit to expectation, they plus Guzman make a decent heart of the order.
And meanwhile, Jake Wald… is.
My son is Madison Bumgarner, the Spacebat of pitching prospects. My other son is a Porsche.
So the infield is...
Infielders (6) Kevin Frandsen 2B , Scott McClain 1B, Ryan Rohlinger 3B, Jake Wald SS
Matt Downs Utility ?
Jesus Guzman 3B , SS ?

There was some talk of Guzman at first.

Kevin Frandsen is a utility player.
The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:

Kevin Frandsen should be with the big team.
McClain's gotta be on the bench.
Makes no sense to start him when you have 4 corner infielders who still qualify as prospects. Guzman and Downs both have some experience at 1B as well as 3B.
I imagine Frandsen and Downs will both get plenty of starts even if they’re at various positions.
Meet my new son: Sundrendy Windster, coming soon to a minor league near you.
I like the idea of Matt Downs getting plenty of starts. I am kind of biased though.
I’m not quite ready to give up on Frandsen yet either.

this
Downs and Frandsen will be on rotation through the infield, and maybe some OF starts if there are any nagging injuries there. I could see Rohlinger getting in on the merry-go-round. They seem to think his range could work at 2b and at maybe back-up short stop, too. And then if Guzman sucks equally at fielding every position, they may just add him to the utl mix as well. maybe. perhaps.
I’m excited to see Downs and Guzman’s power in AAA. And if Rohlinger can keep his power up.

I don't think so...
Wald looks like a backup to me, and the utility guy.
Honestly, I’m smelling a Frandsen SS move, with Downs at second, and Guzman splitting time with McClain at first and DHing.

Wow...just because San Jose is so good....
I mean, really, all this negativity?
This roster has possibly the most well-rounded power lineup, with Downs, Guzman, Bowker and, oh yea, Crash McClain. Meanwhile, the developments of Frandsen and McBryde should be very interesting for Gians fans.
The pitching staff…yea, a bit less interesting, and it will be the weakness of this team, but I’ll like following Espineli, Pucestas and Misch for the future of this team, and I still think the team made a mistake by not keeping Miller in the bigs, as he really looked good until the very end of ST.

I called the infield a clusterfuck of mediocre talent but that’s when I expected Rohlinger, Bocock, etc. to be there. Downs and Guzman certainly make it more interesting. Bowker should get back to hitting. And watching McClain play is simply a joy.
Miller really did throw well and I’m surprised they took Medders over him.

Beating a dead horse I know, but we’ve already seen the “development” of Kevin Frandsen. He’s raked in Fresno before and he’s going to do it again. It really is ridiculous that he’s on this team instead of Velez.

Brute, or other prospect hounds, any tips on what to watch for when seeing McBryde? This year shold provide the first time I get to see him. I’ve read he is fast and "toolsey" but "toolsey" is one of the words that has been (ab)used so much it is almost vague and unhelpful at the same time.
Where is my beer & chili dog?
on McBryde
I’d want to watch McBryde play defense. I’d hope the other teams hit some stuff towards the gaps. He can really cover a lot of ground. When he and Burriss were drafted, the Giants said McBryde was faster than Burriss, and Burriss was rated the fastest middle infielder in the entire draft as I recall. And if someone tries to run on him, great arm too. But the real question for him as a prospect is his approach at the plate. He really just didn’t have an idea of what to do when he got drafted. I didn’t really get to see him last year, but the stats would suggest that he worked very much on getting on base and not focusing on hitting for any power.
Ditto on what Steve said...
Pretty much, enjoy his defense. But what he’ll need to do is figure out a way to hit at least some to not be the new version of Clay Timpner.

by BruteSentiment on Apr 7, 2009 10:12 AM PDT up reply actions
there certainly are some interesting players to watch here, but I think the lack of excitement about this team is the relative lack of upside among most of the players. This is the roster with the career minor leaguers (McClain, Kinney), major league vets trying to claw their way back into the league (Ortiz, Miller, Yabu?), former prospecty-type players who seem to have hit their ceilings (Timpner, Horwitz) and Fresno to SF to Fresno guys (Bowker, Misch, Holm, Frandsen, Matos, Sadler). These are all guys who aren’t in their first go around in AAA and won’t be having breakout seasons there.
There are other guys who are interesting and still have major league upside, like Guzman, Rohlinger, Downs, Pucetas, and McBryde, but even that isn’t an overwhelming group.
This isn’t to say the team won’t play well, but in terms of legit prospects, the team is lacking. I don’t know if there is hostility or negativity about the roster, but if there is, this explanation is probably a good reason for it.

that’s all well and good, but let’s have some perspective here. It has been a while since the Giants have had a lot of true prospects in AAA (other than those 5 scintillating Lincecum starts). I see this team as a major improvement, in terms of both the quality of the team and the number of prospects worth watching, over recent Fresno teams.

Projected Starting Lineup
SS Kevin Frandsen
3B Ryan Rohlinger
1B Jesus Guzman
DH Scott McClain
RF John Bowker
2B Matt Downs
C Steve Holm
LF Mike McBryde
CF Clay Timpner
Not to pick nits...
But i think McBride is in Center or Right. He has an incredib;le arm, and is regarded as the best defensive center feilder in the org.
I’m with you on McBryde.

Interesting
That roster essentially has two LF’s and two CF’s – no true RF. Which, perhaps, is also an indictment of previous drafts (RF being the place where the most gifted OF’s go).
I guess you’d put McBryde in RF, just based on his arm. My understanding is that Bowker is strictly a LF. And Horwitz is, well, Horwitz.
Sergio Romo: striking out professional hitters since 2005. And winner of the 2012 NL Fireman of the Year Award!
I think Bowker’s actually played more RF than LF in his career.

and where oh where is gb?
So we really don’t have a shortstop to come up if something happens to Burris and Diahrea? Thats kind of scary because Frandsen can’t cut it playing short at the big league level
How many teams really have a 3rd backup for every position?

Yeah, that's silly.

Holm v Witter, POWER, and Utl in SF
I don’t get why Witter isn’t in AAA. I guess they want to get Holm AB so he can “develop.” But when he gets bumped or Eli goes wherever Eli goes when they have a real prospect, I expect Witter to be moved to Fresno. And when he gets there, it will be real ultimate power.
Downs, Guzman, McClain, Bowker, and Witter could all hit 20 home runs in Fresno easily. Then Franny will have the chance to slug over 500 and if Rohlinger has ‘put on muscle’ and continues his 9 inning homer bonanza then they both could be on the “power” threat list. That fills out 7 spots in the order.
But then I don’t expect Franny to be in AAA the whole season. They seem to want to get him reps after his year off, but then will move him happily to utl-role bench rotting spot on the roster.
I still think Uribe should be in Fresno, where his power would shine and maybe his trade value increase – unlike sitting on the bench in SF.

two other omissions
Maybe I am out of date on their status in the organization, but I also noticed that P Francis Beltran and 1B Josh Phelps were not on the fresno roster. Both were NRIs to big league camp this spring. Ronnie Ray is another NRI who did not show up on Fresno’s or Connecticut’s roster.
Other players not showing up on either roster would include three pitchers who spent most of last year with Connecticut: Dave McKae, Taylor Wilding, Paul Oseguera.
