Connecticut Defenders 2009 Roster
The San Francisco Giant today announced their 24-man roster for the Connecticut Defenders.
The roster includes a mix of returners as well as some fresh faces. The Giants have sent three of their Top 25 prospects (as rated by Baseball America) which include: right handed pitchers Waldis Joaquin (#11) and Henry Sosa (#13) along with catcher Jackson Williams (#16).
Catchers: Tyler LaTorre, Jackson Williams and Adam Witter
Infielders: Brian Bocock, Brock Bond, Brad Boyer, Andrew D'Alessio, Dave Maroul, Brett Pill, Sharlon Schoop
Outfielders: Bobby Felmy, Tyler Graham, Eddy Martinez-Esteve, Mike Mooney, Antoan Richardson
Pitchers: Steven Edlefsen, Jesse English, Jesse Foppert, Dan Griffin, Waldis Joaquin, Daryl Maday, Brooks McNiven, Mike Musgrave, Daniel Otero, Joe Paterson, Nick Pereira, Henry Sosa
Good to see Giants push Jacks Williams up to AA and working with manager Steve Decker. Possibly Decker will replace Bochy as SF manager next season? Bocock brings his solid glove to Connecticut.
EME is forever stuck in AA even after having a nice 2008 season and following it up with a sold winter league in Puerto Rico.
Sosa, Joaquin, Maday should lead the Defender rotation.

So when Holm gets called up, I’m guessing Witter goes up to AAA. And then perhaps Williams goes down to A+ when Posey comes up?

So I agree, I think the Giants let him warm up in San Jose, then push him to AAA. It’s not like being with Decker in Connecticut would help Posey any more, I would hope the Giants have Manwaring (or whoever is the roving instructor on catching) living with Posey for the 2009 season.

I got the media guide today. I was surprised to see him on staff as a catching instructor. Also, Brian Harper is in the org as a catching instructor. Brian being a member of the Twins team that won the Series in the 90s, and the father of 2008 Grizzly Brett Harper.

Is this a done deal?
I read somewhere that it could be dependent on a new stadium deal in Richmond which is currently a part of $400+ million redevelopment package of the downtown area. That package is, if not quite dead, very very dormant at the moment and I don’t expect it to be revitalized any time soon. Certainly not within the year.

it is very doubtful that the Giants would name him the major league manager after just a year managing A+ and another in AA. Most believe they are grooming him to become the big club’s manager and is somewhat of a rising star as a manager, but he’d likely be a bench coach in the major leagues for a few seasons first before becoming a big league manager. Moreover, let’s see what he does in AA first before giving him the job.

I like this roster...
There’s a bit of power potential. Witter sometimes feels like he can’t hit anything BUT home runs in Dodd, and D’Alessio still has some power in his bat if he’s worked on his plate discipline. Felmy and Mooney, meanwhile, have middling power and I still think EME’s power can come back.
The pitching staff could be one of the more underrated groups in the Giants’ system, and that’s even taking into account I think Sosa is the most overrated pitcher in the system. The question is, can Griffin break through, and does Joaquin live up to his potential, and does Pereira finally find his control again? Maday should get more attention than he does. Otero, meanwhile, feels like the next Brian Anderson to me (to which end, another MIA guy).
It’s not as exciting a roster as San Jose is…but then, I don’t think you’ll see that in any team, majors or minors. But this could be an interesting team, if one that could either do well or fall flat on its face.

Dodd Stadium is an abomination and thank goodness the team is moving to Richmond.
Everybody knows that Ishikawa finding God is what helped him get over the Connecticut hump. Luckily he was not DFAed when he hit a few bumps in the road.
EME isn’t quite back to where he was before, but his road numbers were decent enough that I would have promoted him, just as I would have promoted Ishikawa to Fresno after his first season in Connecticut. He showed a lot more power on the road than in Dudd Stadium. But it wasn’t like Bowker, Ishikawa, or Sandoval’s explosion in AA, he just had a nice season, on the road..
Then again, with Jesus Guzman in AAA, perhaps the team has its quota of hitters with no viable defensive position. Plus the OF, while not stacked, I don’t know if I would jettison any of them just to give EME a chance. Bowker, Horwitz, McBryde, and Timpner. So maybe AA is where he belongs.

Richmond temporarily
Even if Connecticut moves to Richmond, I think there is a good chance that the franchise would have a new affiliate after the move. The Giants player development contract covers two years, but if part of the move is getting a new stadium in Richmond, which might not be ready until the 2011 season, I would expect that they would find a more local major league team with whom to affiliate as they move into a new stadium.
STEVE!
Long time no see, man!
I would have to ask, however, who close would affiliate with Richmond? The two most obvious cities, Baltimore and Washington, seem pretty happy with their current Double-A affiliates. Baltimore’s affiliate in Bowie is perfectly placed for them, while the Nationals seem happy with the city-owned team in Harrisburg, which is about equidistant to D.C. as Richmond. The Reds seem happy with Chattanooga, and I doubt we’ll see Richmond and the Braves on good terms for a little while…
Of all the obvious close choices that are local, the only one that seems possible is Pittsburgh, who is currently affiliated with the Central Pennsylvania Altoona Curve. Altoona remains obviously much more local, but it also has had attendance issues of late. That said, it’s still a recent ballpark and they haven’t had as many issues as Norwich did (As recently as 2006, BA was lauding the organization and attendance in Altoona), so even that seems far-feched.

Altoona
I stopped off to look at it when I was in the neighborhood once. Beautiful little park but boy is that region impoverished. I’m not surprise they have attendance issues. That said, since the Pirates don’t own the team, what do they care about attendance. It’s got to be a cheaper area for their prospects to live and there’s fewer places to get into trouble than Richmond. Why would they want to move?

Oh, so he wasn’t good enough when he was at Connecticut> Good. Glad to see you agree.
GROUGTHINK ALERT
Chatterbalks dot com: Still with jokes. Now with updates.
Nobody is good enough at Connecticut
The park is a damn power blackhole relative to the rest of the Eastern League. He was good on the road, though, and that was what was masked by the horrendous home park skewing his overall numbers. Same for Bowker and Sandoval’s nice stats there, they were really great on the road, but their home park reduced them to merely among the good.
That’s the problem I’ve been writing about for many years now. Nobody ever tries to hit one way in one park, and another way in another park, few people adjust to the ballpark. That is why there is talk that hitters who adjust to the Green Monster in Boston get screwed up on the road.
So if they do terribly in Connecticut, not realizing that it’s the ballpark, not them, then one day they will screw around with their good batting mechanics (assuming they are good) in order to make things happen in Connecticut. That could eventually screw them up so that when they are on the road where conditions are normal, they are just screwed up. After all, they are not major leaguers yet, and if they are struggling, even if it is the ballpark’s fault, then they will eventually yield and fiddle with their batting stance, and so forth, all the things that made them successful up to then. Particularly if you are forced to repeat another season in AA and Dodd.
That’s doable when you have a lot of position prospects coming up the system, he wouldn’t be the first prospect who could have a decent major league career screwed by circumstances. But when our farm system was so vacant of position prospects, you need to do all you can to understand who actually is doing well and who actually is doing poorly. You don’t throw away a position prospect who could be viable when you have so few. You don’t screw the position players with such a ballpark.
Without understanding from management that it’s the ballpark, the players are forced to make a decision. They need to either have the strength of conviction that what they are doing is the correct batting stance and not let Dodd Stadium get to them, trusting that his talent will out, or they find a way to not let it bother them, whether it be finding God, Scientology, Visualization, hypnosis, or your mama told you so.
Otherwise, a prospect who could have been a good contributor to your MLB team gets lost in the minors instead, another in the long line of prospects who failed. That could have been Ishikawa if he didn’t figure out how to trust his talent and not be affected by the circumstances he was stuck in. Now he’s our starting 1B, luckily the Giants never released him, and if he can be successful, according to one researcher, he would be one of the few minor leaguers to repeat A-ball and still be successful in the majors.
About Richmond, yes, there is the strong possibility that the Giants would have to find another affiliate because the new owner has been very open about wanting to be an affiliate of the Washington Nationals. The scuttlebutt is that they would be willing to become a Class A affiliate of Washington at some point. I’ve seen no rumors that they are interested in any other MLB team.
What I’m most happy about is the Giants prospects no longer has to play in Dodd Stadium after 2009. So even if we lose Richmond at some point, and it would be nice because Richmond is a neutral park with their previous team, I think it’s great that we’ll be leaving Dodd after this season. Hopefully they can find another AA affiliate where the park is neutral, just as long as they avoid Dodd.
I still wonder why they bothered moving to the Eastern League, the Texas League seemed like a good locale, though there is the heat of summer that wears players down. Maybe they should split the difference and get a team in the Southern League, they already have Augusta, GA, then the two teams could be near each other, and be in a better weather area.

So Dodd separates the prospects who believe in themselves from the ones that don’t. It forces them to learn the same mental toughness that they need to ever actually play in the majors. Otherwise, it exposes them as unable to be professional athletes.
Yeah, that’s horrible.

As to why the Giants ended up with a team in the Eastern League: it’s my recollection that a new owner purchased the Shreveport Captains/Swampdragons and wanted to move them and switch affiliations. The same year, the Yankees’ contract with Norwich/Connecticut was up, so they were available and the Giants grabbed them. I don’t think it was part of any particular master plan.

If the giants didn’t trade Taschner, he could have gone down to double A, he and Jesse Foppert would make strange bedfellows. Except after the trade to the Phillies, Taschner now has pitched 3 perfect major league innings. Rags, how come you couldn’t get the guy to do that?

I have to say, I’m not sure I understand the horrible problem of having an affiliate in a cold climate and the desperate need to keep anyone resembling a prospect from Connecticut until May. I mean, most organizations have one or more affiliates in a cold climate – either in the Eastern League, the International League, or the Midwest League. These organizations all seem to survive and produce major league-capable players. And, of course, when these players reach the majors, they play games in April in such noted sub-tropical areas as Chicago, Boston, and Milwaukee.
