Interesting ESPN profile of Kim Ng, the Dodgers assistant GM (and hopefully the future GM of the Giants).

I really like Will Friedle as a voice actor. Not that he wasn’t good on Boy Meets World, but his voice career has been pretty good. I also love that he got a cameo in Gotham Knight. That was cool.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

I concur. For a long time (but not that long), I didn’t know he was Terry McGuiness.

That would be awesome if she was a GM somewhere, especially here.

Man, I wish she didn’t work for the Dodgers. She is awesome.

About what I expected.

Very little mention of significant accomplishments with on-field impact, lots of “ZOMG, asian woman cracks good old boy’s club.”

I’m still skeptical as to why a fan should favor her over any other candidate, the information one would need to make that decision, such as examples of influence over specific baseball decisions, never seems to get reported on. Most of what we hear about these people are uninformative cliches: manager X and exec Y saying that prospective GM Z knows the game, is a good baseball person, etc.

It talked about how she’s known around baseball as a hard-lined negotiator, which is more or less what Nasty Ned was known for before being hired by the Dodgers.

Here is an article written by a Mariners fan back when they were considering her for the M’s GM job about her credentials.

Also, I’m not sure it’s really true that we don’t know any specifics about her. We know that she has won high profile arbitration cases against Scott Boras. We know that she negotiates and structures contracts, determines player value, etc etc. She’s been in the game for over 20 years, over 10 of them at the assistant GM position (and with two high-profile teams, so it’s not like she’s been bouncing around). She’s got ample experience in nearly every important part of baseball decision-making other than scouting. I’m not sure what more you could want to know, I guess? I suppose you want “specifics”, but I can’t say I’ve ever heard anything about specific “specifics” for the hotshot male GM candidates (say, Chris Antonetti or David Forst or the like).

Perhaps the information isn’t explicitly reported to the fans but the people in the Yankees and Dodgers organizations were apparently aware of it and they’ve had her in very high ranking positions for their teams. I’m sure that any team that was going to think about hiring her would be aware of it. But yeah, maybe, you know, she has just been hanging around as a token or whatever for the past twenty years and she’s secretly totally unqualified and has no idea what she’s doing, who knows.

This is my point. We know alot about her (and the other candidates) in a general sense, but nothing that would separate any of them from one another. All those things you list, winning an arbitration case, 20 years in the front office, lots of non-specific experience, are a virtual cut and paste of every other potential future GM. That’s foot in the door material; it should get her an interview, but there’s nothing in there that would make me want here as our team’s GM. If I was going to support a candidate, I’d want to know alot more about their approach and philosophy, their role in important decisions made during their tenure in previous positions (good and bad), their opinions of specific players, managers, agents, and executives, the specifics of their negotiation experience, etc. I’m not picking on Ng specifically, but she seems to be a lightening rod because of her high profile. I just find it interesting that she gets so much support based on an immense paucity of evidence which I’d consider relevant.

Okay, that’s fair enough, some of the wording of your original comment left me a bit :\ but I can dig what you’ve said here. I do agree and I’d assume that if she were to interview for, say, the Giants job and be seriously considered for it, we would probably be made privy to more specific aspects of her resume (though, I guess, it might not happen unless she actually got the job.)

If Sabean isn’t retained, Ng certainly should definitely be somebody that is considered for the position, hopefully only based on her impressive qualifications. I’d certainly prefer someone new with a fresh perspective, rather than some retread that’s been fired from some GM jobs before.

actually, I’m not in favor of her at all. She strikes me as a slightly more careful version of Agent Ned: some baseball business sense, and would do well in fantasy baseball, but nothing scouting/player development and assessment there. I’ll pass, gladly.
