What could have been...
1. The moment prior to Zito giving up the big hit last night, he had a ERA of about 4.00 and had me thinking what is over/under he could sustain that for a whole year.
2. If Brian Wilson hadn't ordered hamburgers in his room from an overaggressive male in a ninja suit (or give up a big hit to the Diamondbacks), the Giants might be in second place in the west. Only two games back (one in loss column :o) and a half game back in the wild card race with only 144 to play.
well, there's always next season.

The problem is "Who would want our old and unproductive bats?"
Unload Veterans? Who would you propose to “unload?”
And the big question is “WHO WOULD WANT THEM?”
Old and unproductive is NOT a great thing. You can bet other teams can read a stat sheet as well as we can (if not better!). I don’t see any numbers being posted by ANY of our players (other than pitchers) that would make anyone want to call Sabian up and say “What do you want for him?”
Lewis? He can hit, but (so far) his lack of fielding is hurting us almost as his bat is helping. Case in point, last night the Dodgers first score was just a lack of concentration by Lewis in not catching the fly ball.
Rowand? He is set for money and years on his contract with SF
Big Money? Then what? move Sandoval to catching all the time?
Sandoval? Who do you get in exchange?
Uribe? Again, what is his worth right now to anybody?
WHO would you suggest we “Unload” and for who do you think you could get?

While the Giants are certainly not in great shape....
the Giants are certainly not out of it. While I certainly wouldn’t put money on the Giants winning the NL west (after all, the dodgers were the favorites going into the season and their better than expected start increases their chances), giving up hope now is stupid.

by Bay Area Sports Guy on Apr 28, 2009 11:24 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
May Manny's Hammy stay healthy...But the Dodgers still loose...
I do not wish an injury on anyone, I just wish that Manny would become the “Manny the team destroyer from within” that we all loved to watch as he worked his mojo majic on other teams…. Unfortunatly, I believe LA is the perfect fit for Mr. Manny. Crazy people, doing crazy things, all the time, and he speaks Spanish….The blue Du Rag is big in East LA….Torres doesn’t care about what happens off the field, or on as lone as “JUST WIN BABY” Think that Al Davis is no longer entitled to this quote….Give it to Torres…
Damn it! Manny with 3 doubles in last nights game. I was VERY against trying to bring Manny here (but) damn it, he can hit….Got to give him his props…(I hate the Dodgers, just admire a player/coach that does what he is supposed to do…)

"Everything is proceeding as I have foreseen." (Screw the 'Star Trek' nerds; 'Star Wars' is all.)
Mel, I don’t think anyone was expecting the Giants to contend this year. The plan for the last 3 years was to build solid teams based on drafting, development, etc. It is working; we are not only a better team and getting better, but there is actually non-insane reason to think we are going to be great starting next year and certainly by 2011. I don’t think anyone was expecting us to be much more than .500 this year (there is a thread on that, in fact, but I’m too lazy to find it and link it). We are pretty much right on track with most people’s expectations.
And I would say that there is room for cautious optimism if one is given to that sort of thing (I am not). We are at .500 at the end of April despite the fact that some of our guys are either underperforming or are turning out to be not as good as hoped, whichever it turns out to be (such as Renteria, Burriss, etc.) Either those guys will get better, which would be great & the results should improve; or else they won’t get better, in which case we are .500 and just about where we thought we’d be.
Forsan et heac olim meminisse iuvabit... Maybe.

I'm even feeling optimistic about Renteria

I agree with what you said and tend to be one of the more optimistic folks around here, but the one thing I’ll quibble with is that we’re a .500 team if the offensive deadweights don’t improve.
The pitching would have to keep up the incredible run they’re on, giving up 4 runs a game. And I don’t know if that’s likely.
They’ve scored 68 runs and allowed 76. Over the long haul, that doesn’t sound like a .500 team.
On the other hand, they’ve looked a lot better overall since that six game losing streak, so I’m optimistic that the bad stretch might have been a fluke. I still like this team. They’re plucky and and have been in their games win or lose lately. I’m hopeful that everyone gets to where we expected them to be (except Zito, he can stay right where he is!). If that happens it’ll be a fun season.

parabolic success/ failure ride
im very very happy that we even had a chance to lose a game that actually meant something after the epic fail experienced between games 3 and 12. yeah, we lost a game we should have won, but goddamn it feels good to be a giant fan right now.
i adopt Les Plack, D.D.S. for the following reasons:

2. i am hoping for free dental care from my son (if he ever hears of this)
