Post-Game Non-Sweep Thread: Giants lose in extra innings

I might have kind of sort of maybe jinxed this one by having a "SWEEP SASSY MOLASSEY!"-thread ready to go before Wilson came in. Lesson learned.

There are some things you just don’t joke about. The Holocaust, rape, and a Bruce Bochy contract extension, for example.

Like I said in the previous thread, I missed much of the game, so I have to ask – how was Sandoval’s homer? Was it a legit shot?
I very much want for Sandoval to start hitting the crap out of the ball. He’s looked better for the last week and a half or so.

3) If you’re doing it in an interleague game with the DH in effect, so much the better!
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that pie > cake, that Bochy is endowed by his creator with certain undeniable traits, that among these are veteran man-love, a giantic skull, and the pursuit of the double switch.
Adopted Giant: Fred Lewis, who can still draw a walk.
Did Scott Reiss just call Duane “Glen”? or was I just not paying attention?

May I ask why Bochy pinch-hit for Cain rather than send him back out to pitch the 8th inning? Yeah, yeah I know Lewis led off with a double but I then ask you who was the STUPIDER manager in this game – Bochy or Melvin ? Melvin left his struggling hurler in the game to pitch to a fella who had owned him this game – Brooks was 3-3.
I had no problem with that. Tie game and Cain hadn’t exactly been efficient.
Randy Winn is going to catch that. And he'll do it real classy-like too.
That was the right decision
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
They needed the baserunner more than they needed an extra inning from Cain. Remember, even if Cain goes 8, Wilson still pitches the ninth.
Randy Winn is going to catch that. And he'll do it real classy-like too.
And maybe we wouldn’t have had a lead at all if Cain hits for himself there. Like… seriously, I don’t see how that would have helped. The fact of the matter is that Wilson fucking blew it. That’s all there is to it.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

there might not have been a lead for Wilson to blow, I guess. We could have been spared the indignity of the 9th inning collapse.

THIS
Seriously, how anybody can even bring up Bochy’s admittedly boneheaded moves (of which pinch hitting for Cain was not one) is ridiculous. Wilson blew a save. That is all.

Not necessarily
Why keep throwing a pitcher out there when you have other options you can use to pitch the 9th? Affeldt, Howry can pitch the 9th if needed. Time to stretch out the pitchers.
Bochy did have other options for the 9th. He didn’t use them.
Randy Winn is going to catch that. And he'll do it real classy-like too.
So your problem is REALLY that Howry wasn’t available because Bochy used him for one batter.

Research has been done by the guys who wrote “The Book” (MGL and TomTango) that show that it’s almost always a bad idea to let a pitcher hit for himself in late innings of a tie game rather than go to a pinch hitter. Pitchers lose effectiveness at a certain point and are much much much more likely to make an out at the plate than a pinch hitter is (and at that point of the game, outs are scarce.)
I’m not sure how you think keeping Cain in would have helped. The problem was that Wilson came in with a three run lead and blew it. How would having Cain pitch the 8th inning have helped that?
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
If Cain pitches the 8th then Affeldt and Howry are still available to pitch the 9th. Thursday is yet another off day so he can rest if you are concerned about PC. To me the bullpen is to be used when starters can go no longer.
I missed the first 7 innings today but this sounds like 20/20 hindsight. If Wilson doesn’t blow this game, we’re not even talking about whether Cain should have thrown another inning.
That said, if you’re inclined to criticize Bochy’s late-game managerial moves in general, I’m happy to join you.
"Are we bad? No. But right now, we are." Boulderskull, 4.16.09
why not use the bullpen when they give a better chance to win the game?
Randy Winn is going to catch that. And he'll do it real classy-like too.
Situation by situation
A manager needs to determine what gives his team a better chance. Prior to game I thought BWillie would be smoking a blunt in the bullpen because I was not about to use him after using him a lot lately. Plus there is that upcoming series vs the Bums.
Cain is doing fine and arm is fresh, If Cainer begs off then go to pen if not then he is still pitching. Thursday is another off day. So I know no BWillie so chances are Affedlt is my closer du jour. Howry is setup guy.
Situation dictates Cain pitches the 8th and then revisit after 8th.
No, they need a run to win the game. Situation dictates that Cain get pulled for pinch hitter and that the bullpen be called on to do their job. That gives you a better chance to win the game.
As for the ninth, you may be right about that perhaps it was the right night for an alternate closer, but all we needed to do that is just use one pitcher in the eighth.
And I know you aren’t evaluating it on a situation by situation basis because after every game you say that the starter should have gone longer.
Randy Winn is going to catch that. And he'll do it real classy-like too.
I must have missed that one.
Randy Winn is going to catch that. And he'll do it real classy-like too.
well, you’re right about that.
/stares thirty in the eyes
Randy Winn is going to catch that. And he'll do it real classy-like too.
Wait a second
What are you talking about, with Brian Wilson being used too much lately? They were off Monday and Thursday, and Wilson didn’t pitch on Tuesday and Friday. This was only his third appearance of the week. Both Howy and Affeldt pitched in every game of this series, but not Wilson. Don’t blame Bochy because Wilson stunk.
Proud new dad of Edgardo errr Edgar Renteria!!!
Brian Wilson lost this game for us, pure and simple. Not the wasted opportunities, not Bochy’s stupid moves, not Medders and not Miller. Brian Wilson.

Wilson’s erraticity aside , the ball Upton lined was well placed – he was just lucky enough to get the bat there. That tied the game , what followed afterward was what lost it.
Medders doesn’t lose Montero and Ojeda and we might be feeling better…but probably not. Your setup men and your – cough – closer are your best relievers…if they can’t git ’ er done she’s probably not gonna git done.

If Affeldt alone pitches the 8th then Howry is available for the 9th. Of course, he never would have come in because Bochy wouldn’t ever pull Wilson, but he’d be available and you’d still be criticizing the Giants for their one run-scoring move for some ridiculous reason.

I skipped most of the game to go see Sugar. Turns out it was a good idea.
The film is really good. Very sad. The anti-Rocky, if you will. A few things that stood out to me: they used the old Swing of the Quad Cities for the low-A team. Now the Quad Cities team is something stupid, not nearly as cool as the old Swing name and saxophone/baseball logo. There’s a really beautiful Spanish version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah near the end of the film. I’ve been searching the intertubes for the artist info so I can get it on my iPod, and it’s already sparked outrage from cranky music elitists that their song omg!!!! was used in a baseball movie. And Jose Rijo is in the film. Yes. That Jose Rijo.
It’s the side of the Dominican baseball story we don’t get to see: what happens to the guys who can’t make it work in pro ball. The main character’s isolation and frustrations happen to all the kids who come over here. Recently at a San Jose Giants game I watched the field during a pitching change. The OF all came together, Neal, Ford, and Kieschnick. The infielders Gillaspie, Crawford, and Noonan came together. And there was Angel by himself at the first base bag. I felt sad for him. I know he has another Dominican dudes on the team in Frias and Wilmin Rodriguez, but I didn’t realize until then that the top prospects in this system are mostly lily white.
But yes. See it if you can. It’s playing in Pleasant Hill at the Cinearts, the dome theatre, if you’re in the East Bay.

Incidentally
Even after Pablito’s bomb and the double-digits-in-hits games this weekend, the Giants are still last (or bottom three or four) in the majors in nearly every offensive category: runs, hits, HRs, total bases, RBIs, AVG, OBP, SLG, OPS.

BOCHY IS A FUCKING IDIOT
From Hank Schulman:
The Giants conclude their homestand today and return to San Francisco for three games against the Dodgers. They’ll face two left-handed starters (Randy Wolf, Eric Stults), and Bochy hinted Rich Aurilia would start at first base those games, meaning Travis Ishikawa’s only start would be Tuesday against Chad Billingsley.
Whatever
I have a really hard time getting worked up about Ishikawa sitting right now. Not enthusiastic about it, mind you, but not upset by any stretch.

Portland had a 10 run inning in the game. Connecticut only had an eight run inning. Dan Otero escaped unscathed. Mike Mooney hit another salami. I think he has two already.

after my anger at Wilson subsided
i was left with the image of Burriss getting picked off first, followed by Winn’s double into the gap.
That would’ve made the game a non-save situation.
oh well. win the first game in LA (easier said than done with Zito kicking things off) and nobody’s staring at the premise of another streak of soul-crushing sucky baseball.
It could have been a non-save situation even earlier had it not been for bad luck and bad baserunning. Just a strange game overall.
It never occurred to me that one man could play with the faith of 50 million.

I'm not that heartbroken...
Wilson blows some saves every season… It’s unlikely that this will spiral him out of being a legitimate closer…
It’s unlikely that this game will ruin the Giants shot at the playoffs…
And despite the bad ending, the Giants played good baseball.
I actually feel optimistic about the Giants after this game, especially with Sandoval’s performance.

+1
I read through the whole post with the intent of posting this same thing. We won 2 of 3 and almost swept. Our starter, again, gave up almost nothing. Wilson will blow saves, he’ll also finish them out more often than not. We’re playing well and this is Zito’s chance to really start making believers.

When I saw it was 1-1,
I was like “AWESOME JOB CAIN!”
When I saw Pablito hit the Homero, I was like “GOD DAMN I WISH I WAS WATCHING THIS GAME!” also “BIEN HECHO, MIJO!”
When I saw Wilson blow the save, I was glad I coudn’t watch. That sucked. The baseball gods decided it wasn’t yet our time to be above .500, a time that may have only been able to come once this season.

It was borderline excruciating. They dragged it out over 3 innings, and I knew the Giants had no chance after the Upton homer.

wtf...
“Dodgers, by 10 games,” said one scout who has already seen every team in the division. “I’ll be surprised if it goes any other way.”
This was in an article on the Giants official Website.
"Chemistry is a class you take in high school or college, where you figure out two plus two is 10, or something."
- Dennis Rodman
Double Switch - Defensive Sub
Let me get this straight. So Fred hits for the pitcher. In the inning the team bats around to the 7th spot. Then you double switch for the guy in the 3rd spot?!? The guy that is 4-4 with a grand slam. I guy that can’t be pitched around – when he’s hot, he is hot. But you take that guy out and put in Uribe to bat 2nd in the next inning and put the pitcher’s spot up 5th in the inning (the giants got pretty close to bringing 5 batter to the plate in the ninth.)
Alternatives
- Leave in Fred. Take out Nate who just struck out in the 6th spot. Plus, you hate Nate and it would serve him right.
- Take out Ishikawa, put someone on 1st.
- Don’t fucking double switch since you won’t let a reliever pitch in the ninth except Wilson anyways. So just PH in the eighth for Affeldt/Howry.
While I’ve been ranting, I realized that Uribe is the defensive sub and Boch never figured on extra innings or more than a handful of Giants batters in the Ninth. But why bet that more than 4 players wouldn’t bat the next inning? I know it’s the Giants, but…

Ishikawa, let the boy hit against lefties.
Good points, all
It’s fine that the blame for blowing this game rests squarely on the shoulders of Brian Wilson. Three run lead with three outs to go, he’s the closer, it was his game to lose, and he lost it. Everything else is just what-ifs.
Having said that, isn’t it fair to assume that managers should think about what-ifs involving his closer in late inning scenarios such as the one that occurred today? Shouldn’t part of Bochy’s job responsibility be thinking about what move he’s going to make if his closer CLEARLY has nothing that day? If his closer has nothing and Bochy DOES NOTHING ABOUT IT—no pulling him after a couple hitters to find someone, anyone in the bullpen to get you three outs and protect your lead—then the manager can double-switch till the cows come home and fill twenty ballparks with defensive replacements and it won’t make a fuck’s worth of difference.

I was annoyed that Medders went out for a third inning with no sign of Merkin. He’s still on the team, right?
Medders was great for 2 innings, but you could tell he didnt have the same stuff after the first walk

Really?
I think it’s pretty meh.
GROUGTHINK ALERT
Chatterbalks dot com: Still with jokes. Now with updates.
Wilson, Winn, Burriss
Some folks in here have been calling for Bochy to realize that after a couple of hitters he should have noticed that Wilson was struggling and should have gotten someone up in the pen…..
Watch some video of any of Wilson’s 41 saves last year. The dude is just an adventure at least once every other save opportunity. Last week he came within one pitch of walking the first two batters in the 9th. He really does struggle to locate that fastball at times. But he’s been good (if not great) at wiggling out of stuff. He routinely gets himself into trouble. How many big league managers would have got someone up in the pen after two batters in the 9th against their closer? NONE. Back to Wilson though. He’s got to elevate that fastball. Get it up under the hands. The single by Reynolds and the home run by Upton were both golfed out of there big time. 97mph is very tough to catch up to for even the best hitters in the game if you can get it up and in. 97mph down and in gets you what we saw today.
Horrible AB by Winn to waste Uribe’s leadoff double that last inning. First pitch swinging at a ball away. He had the luxury to see a pitch there and blew it. Yes it almost got up the middle for a hit but he sure didn’t have a good pitch to pull there.
Burriss made Eugenio look like a good baserunner by getting picked off there. That’s the winning run. Winn’s double scores him easily. Just terrible there. And if Bochy put the steal on there, shame on him for doing that on the FIRST PITCH after Uribe’s flyout. That’s like an impatient little league coach who lets one out frustrate him into a bad decision right away. Yes, a three run lead is a good time to run. I just thought first pitch was bad timing. And Burriss should have anticipated a throw over. He just lost focus and that play had as much to do with the loss as any other….

Be careful what you tweet, Brian
Let me start this post by saying I am not Brian Wilson’s father. He is 27 years old and can spend his free time however he chooses. His personal life is just that, and I don’t make a habit of reporting on players’ extracurricular activities.
Now, if the players report it themselves . . .
Somebody alerted me to Wilson’s Twitter page. Unless somebody hijacked the page, we have to conclude the Giants’ closer was out very late Saturday night clubbing in Scottsdale. There are a couple of posts suggesting he was getting into it with what he called “overaggressive males.” His last post of the night is stamped “about 22 hours ago,” in other words, 1 a.m. Sunday.
Which would not have worth mentioning except that the Giants played a day game today. In that game, Wilson could not throw fastballs where he wanted and lost a 4-1 lead in the ninth for his first blown save of the season. The Giants ended up losing in the 12th, 5-4.
A word of caution, Brian. Fans notice this stuff.

i saw that
and was like, really, he posted that?
Great. Talent wasted , in more ways than one.
It would be sweet if Wilson acquired the ability to , as it’s said , “climb the ladder” with his fastball as well – start low and work your way up the zone. I won’t hold my breath , however.
