The 49ers are going to get Crabtree

Wow.  That's seem like good luck that's very out of character for a SF-based franchise. If they pick up another RB, a lineman, and an edge-rusher later, it seems like a decent draft for them

Anyone else watching the draft? Comments other than LOL Raiders (which is appropriate again today)? I'm not a big NFL fan compared to baseball, but still interested.

PS - $42M guaranteed for Stafford - this should be interesting.

Christmas in April

Yesterday was my birthday, and today it’s Christmas — precisely eight months early.

Without revealing my age directly, I’m the same age as Chris Lincecum. I’m not sure he took my suggestion to start counting backwards than he, though, so by my math I’m a few years younger then he.

The great story of my draft of course is left tackle Michael Oher, taking by the Baltimore Ravens. After being taken off the Memphis streets by a family in a suburb of Memphis, Michael attended the high school alma mater of my older nephew, not far from where our great poster Lyle lives.

Incredibly enough, when I went back to attend the wedding of that nephew, my son and I stayed in Lyle’s town, something I found out very soon thereafter when I got to know Lyle on-line.

And continuing on the football bent, my son and I “listened” to the Cal football game on his cell phone before the wedding and during the reception. It was the game in which Cal came within 12 yards of being the #1 team in the nation.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Apr 25, 2009 8:08 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

defensively, they’re pretty close. they need to find one more pass rusher or have someone on the current roster step into that role. They can stop the run, though, and appear to have corners who can (for the most part) hang with some of the best receivers in the league.

offensively is another matter, but unlike baseball, in football one change CAN and often does affect the performance of the rest of the team. I’m kind of a believer in what I call the critical mass theory, by which I mean that to be a good offense, you need to have a certain number of playmakers that make the other team take notice. Your average defense can scheme against and shut down 1 or 2 guys. It’s when they have to stop 4 or 5 that things break down. Crabtree should, at least, get the Niners one step closer to being able to overwhelm opposing defenses with people to focus on.

Idolizing Robb Nen since 2002...

by Smoke on the Water on Apr 25, 2009 10:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They're not too far away.

The defense isn’t too far off(13th best defense in the NFL and the best in the division), like SotW said, they just need another pass rusher. Maybe Manny can finally develop in to that, or grab a guy with their 3rd round pick tomorrow.

Offensively, our season depends on the play of our QB. We should have a top shelf running game, our offensive line should be above average and our WR corp is the best it’s been since 2003… so it’s going to be up to Hill/Smith to not fvck things up.

by superk1ng on Apr 26, 2009 12:02 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

And they will now have two first rounders in next years draft after todays trade. If the QB situation doesn’t improve this year, they can always draft a Heisman winning QB with one of their first rounders next yeat, or package them in a trade for a proven one. Future could be really bright in two years

by m34josh on Apr 26, 2009 12:24 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s exactly what I was thinking when we picked up that extra first. I just hope that somebody emerges other than Bradford and McCoy… not a fan of either of them.

by superk1ng on Apr 26, 2009 1:05 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

isn't

the 13th best defense in the NFL actually quite average? Furthermore, by DVOA (footballoutsiders.com) they were actually 19th, not 13th, and if you weight the later games higher, they were 24th.

BUT lets say, for the sake of argument that they can put an average defense on the field next year. Now, they have to get all the way up to an average offense (from basically 28th or so) from “terrible”.

So… I think something along the lines of an 8-8 or 9-7 season in 2009 would be pretty optimistic… but it would also be a hell of a lot better than the Nolan years.

they finished 13th

after being ranked 29th through the first 8 games. I know that’s a bit of cherry picking but it wasn’t until after Nolan was fired that we finally dropped the “big sub” package and switched to a 3-4 full time(which they didn’t even use in the first half). The defense under Singletary ranked in the top 5 over his last 8 games, in terms of yards and points allowed.

The defenses strength was the ability to the run(bordering on elite) but their pass rush is still too weak. I was optimistic because I thought we’d address that in the draft but since we didn’t, I could see us finishing around 10-13 again next year in defense(unless Manny has a break out season).

by superk1ng on Apr 27, 2009 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think you have account for opponents and 3rdD conversions, etc.

Run defense ranked 8 in yd/att. But they were 18th in DVOA. Their schedule was quite weak.

You should really check out the stats at footballoutsiders.

I'm actually a little worried about Crabtree

Not a fan of translating spread offense guys to the NFL… especially a Singletary run ‘3rds and a cloud of dust’ team

FIRE BRIAN SABEAN... UNLESS HE KEEPS DRAFTING WELL. .. AND SIGNS UNDERRATED PLAYERS LIKE AFFELDT OR PHELPS. .. OR ALRIGHT WHO'S PLAYING WITH THE ALIEN MIND-SWITCHING RAY?

Well, it’s not like Crabtree is a pure speed guy.

I can tell because the Raiders didn’t draft him.

Maybe his best trait

My good friend Jim (the one who sat next to me at McCovey’s) said the thing he liked best about Crabtree was his ability to really grab the ball, whether in traffic or not, whether the ball was thrown into his body or not.

By the way, I just came across Jahvid Best’s freshman and sophomore highlight tapes. I had seen most of them, but when compiled they make an amazing statement.

Didn't

Didn’t Jerry Rice’s Mississippi Valley State team use a somewhat different offense?

by sharksrog on Apr 27, 2009 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yep. It was a Spread offense, I believe.

Adoptive Parent of Francisco Peguero. He can throw, he can run, he can hit(fastballs), and he's Dominican. What else do you need to know?

Don't be

this guy is the real deal. I watched A LOT of Texas Tech last year, because I had a feeling we could get him. He is not Rashaun Woods or Mike Williams- he has “game speed”, same as Jerry. He’s not the next Rice, but it’s the same sort of thing where people question his speed or his offensive scheme- Jerry and Crabs actually have very complicated offenses, because the WRs in a spread O have so many different routes to remember and a lot of different assignments to pick up.

Also, Sing is not going to run a “3 and a cloud” system. People are really misrepresenting what he said on this. He wants to be able to run the ball, but only when the team really needs to run the ball. He’s fine with throwing, but the problem with Martz is that Martz NEVER wanted to run the ball. Sing wants a balance, and in the 4th quarter when you’re up by 3 you have to be able to run the ball, and that’s what Sing is building the offense to do. If they wanted 3-and-a-cloud, they wouldn’t have taken Crabtree, they’d have traded down. It’s obvious they intend to use Crabs in the way he’s intended- running wild on Defenses.

Any thoughts?

Any thoughts on where Jahvid Best might go in next year’s draft (assuming he comes out)? The only two things that could keep him down would seem to be injury (which he has suffered three of the past four years) or a lack of holes caused by offensive line turnorver (including the loss of #21 overall draft pick, center Alex Mack) and/or the lack of a passing game.

Then again, the Cal Bears hardly had a passing game last year, and Jahvid still led the NCAA in average yards per carry (8.1). I have seen most of Jahvid’s college games on TV and actually covered for the Contra Costa Times one of his games in his junior season. But when I recently came across his highlights first from his freshman year and then his sophomore campaign, the effect of seeing all those highlights in five minutes from the freshman year and 10 from the sophomore season really blew me away.

The freshman highlights include several plays he made on punt coverage. Despite being injured late in the year, Jahvid was selected as the All-Conference special teams player. Several of his exciting kickoff returns were shown, as well. And one touchdown run from scrimmage he made in that freshman year was as good as any of his career.

As a sophomore, he is shown running from scrimmage and running back kickoffs. Several of his catches out of the backfield were included, including a fine catch of a bomb down the right sideline, a leaping catch that was closed out with a hard hit while he was still in midair, and a one-handed grab.

Running out of the backfield, many long runs were shown, including most of his 15 touchdowns. Three off the runs shown are plays in which he made good gains after completely reversing his field from a run around one end, turning it into a run around the other side.

Best’s cutbacks are about as good as I have seen. And his speed is rivaled by few in football at any level. (Jahvid won the state 100 meters championship handily in his senior year of high school in a 10.31 time.)

Weakesses include questionable health (He once again was held out of contract in spring practice.) and being a very mediocre runner when he doesn’t have a hole.

But Jahvid seems to have good vision and really hits any holes that do develop. He has a nice forward lean, so that while at 195 pounds he is far from a power runner, he often manages to get a few extra yards when he is tackled. That’s when he is indeed tackled, of course. Often he either scores or is merely run out of bounds.

My understanding from some of the officials who refereed his high school games (which included over 1500 yards gained as a junior and over 3000 years as a senior) was that they believed he would need to move to wide receiver, since they felt he was guilty of not hitting the hole in high school.

As a collegian, that hasn’t been a problem. In fact, one of his top skills as a college player is his ability to hit the hole very quickly — even after sometimes waiting for the hole to develop. And he likely has gained at least 15 pounds since high school, playing at about 195 last season. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s at 200 as a junior and maybe 205 if he stays for his senior year.

Best is about as elusive at high speeds as I have seen, and he gets going fast enough that he develops at least a little pop when he is hit. Best played last season with both a foot injury and a dislocated elbow that caused him to wear a large arm brace for most of the season. Yet still he led the nation in yards per carry. He was at his healthiest for Cal’s final three games (Stanford, Washington and Miami). In those three games, he gained 698 yards on 58 carries, for a 12.0 average gain.

In the Emerald Bowl game against Miami, Jahvid went around left end for a nice game. A replay showed that one of the Miami linebackers was actually outside Best and about 10 yards down the field ahead of Jahvid. Yet somehow Best beat him to the corner and ran right around him.

Speed kills.

I don’t have as much to say as you, but I’ve always been very concerned by Best’s health and his deficiencies in any kind of traffic. Then again, I guess I got a little used to watching Arrington and Lynch dragging 9 tacklers apiece (in college).

But health was a concern for Lynch, too. And, might I say, Gore. So I should probably try to look past it.

I’d really like to see more games this year. I wasn’t able to actually watch most of last year (I was a box score baby), so I didn’t see him enough to make a good, strong impression about the kid. But when I have seen him, his strength has really worried me. Otherwise, he’s obviously an electric player.

Not a power runner

Jahvid isn’t a power runner by any stretch of the imagination. He played at 185 as a freshman and at no more than 195 last season.

If you can stop him at the line of scrimmage before he gets up a head of steam, he isn’t going to drag you forward much, if any. But once he gets going, he’s tough to tackle head on, which means his momentum will drag you down the field for a few yards.

And on occasion — not often — I have seen him take on a tackler head on and actually deliver a blow. But his greatest strength when being tackled is in not letting guys get a straight-on shot, and sometimes missing him altogether.

I did see that Rivals.com selected Jahvid as the most explosive college player of 2008. Can’t say that I disagree.

Barry Sanders was great because he had incredible moves (and even at his short stature could easily dunk a basketball). Jahvid’s top ability is to make players miss without losing much speed.

In the opening game for Cal, he put a juke on a safety that left the guy falling down — as Jahvid ran untouched into the end zone. In the Emerald Bowl, Jahvid made a fine cutback, then made a two-step sideways move while still facing the tackler, leaving that guy grabbing air as Jahvid outrran everryone to the end zone.

Jahvid set the Cal single-game record for rushing with 311 yards — in just 34 minutes. That’s right. Four minutes into the second half — as soon as he had broken the Cal record, which he did by 28 yards — he was pulled. Jahvid gained 200 yards on his last six carries in that game.

Cal took over at their own 11-yard line with 33 seconds left in the first half. It’s either throw the ball down the field or kneel down, right? Well, I had a diffferent idea, and so did Jeff Tedford. They gave the ball to Jahvid running right. A sharp cutback and then a stop move at the sideline that gained him another 20 yards, and Jahvid went out of bounds with about 20 seconds remaining — and the ball on Washington’s 36-yard line.

Coupled with his 20- and 53-yarders to end his first half, he gained an even 200 yards on those last six carries. He had gained “only” 111 on his first 13 rushes.

I suspect Jahvid will play at about 200 this season. I still don’t expect him to be a power runner, but I suspect he’ll turn on the tiniest bit off power to go with his natural electricity.

If Cal can’t open holes for him and/or if he becomes injured again, he obviously won’t gain huge yardage. But unless one or both of those factors occurs, I don’t see how he wouldn’t be a likely candidate to break the Cal season record for yards gained, which I believe is just over 2000 yards.

Jahvid exceeded 1500 yards his junior season in high school, and then went over 3000 yards as a senior. Near the end of the last season, it was almost as if Jahvid’s yards gained in a drive would be determined by how far away the Bears were from their opponents’ goal line.

Then, in the second half, Jahvid ran for -1, 84, 8 and 36 yards.

I keep waiting

I keep waiting for USC to have a bad recruiting year. MAN, they get the talent.

USC is obviously a great place from which to get drafted, and if one isn’t able to play football professionally, he is able to take advantage of about the best network for their graduates of any school around.
