Post-Game Fun Chatter!

It sounded ridiculous to suggest that Barry Zito’s stuff looked better at the start of this season – his ERA coming into today’s game was 10.00. But, well, Barry Zito’s stuff looked better at the start of this season. He was getting strikeouts, for one. That hasn’t happened the last two Aprils. So while today’s performance is a welcome surprise, it isn’t completely bizarre. It’s only mostly bizarre. But even as the World’s Biggest Pitching Duel Fan – I have a coffee mug and everything – I’m getting tired of these 1-0 and 2-0 wins. They’re too nerve-wracking.

Ah, who am I kidding? I’ll take 148 more of these please.

by daveinexile on Apr 22, 2009 4:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Since it is a given the McBryde has plus defense and can play all 3 outfield positions the McBryde Experiment works only if he hits. If he cannot hit he then toes the rubber.

by wilriv21 on Apr 22, 2009 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

You push McBryde to RF you make it so not only does he have to raise his hitting to be useful to the big club but he has to raise to a higher level so that can push other hitting corner outfielders aside.

Plus I am pretty sure Bowker has been playing RF and he can use that polish to handle RF in SF should his hitting discipline improves.

Add that if the Giants’ end up with a competent, cheep, team controlled CF they have a very valuable commodity to either trade or use by going into the Free agent/ trade market for a better hitting LF.

Velez to start CF in Fresno hinders almost all that. Now drop Velez and make him the utily man in Fresno bringing up Frandsen I can get behind. Then come June if the McBryde thing is going very poorly you can look at Velez there.

Where is my beer & chili dog?

Why punish McBryde for Velez who cannot play the game of baseball. McBryde offers upside where Velez doesn’t really

Why does Sabean always look constipated?

by TexasRanger on Apr 22, 2009 5:40 PM PDT up reply actions

McBryde best upside may be on the mound. There is a way to get plenty of playing time for both players as OFers.

by wilriv21 on Apr 22, 2009 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions

As for push McBryde down: Seriously just what good does that serve? Are you content with Torress or Timpner being your plan "B" for CF the next 3 years? Are you certain enough that Rowand can keep them as Plan "B" the next 3 years? You would have to answer "yes" to all 3 questions then ask yourself if you think a strong armed good fielding CF with decent hitting numbers in AAA would be more attractive to another club then the best case Zorak? Then that answer that question "No" so that move to even begin start to make sense. If your answer varies on any those 4 I can’t imagine how pushing McBryde down is good idea.

Now may very well be true McBrydes future is on the mound – I’ll even posit you know his skills better- but I don’t think he is at a point yet were a team has to goes the Nathan/Ankiel route on him yet. It makes much more sense to give Velez the role Leone had the last couple seasons – as the Fresno Rover. As the higher upside candidates wash out (and they will) or graduate he plays.

Where is my beer & chili dog?

True enough.

And I am not saying McBryde will but we know Timpner will not. Velez really hasn’t yet with how many MLB P.A.’s? So exactly why should Velez get McBrydes chance to earn 2010 MLB P.A.’s?

Nice steal by Torres. That seems like a big play.
Strike one – maybe Velez didn’t count the checked swing ruled a strike on the appeal.
 Strike two – foul ball
Strike three – swing and a miss.

Still stood there. Confused. Miller supposes Velez missed the check swing appeal strike. And says Velez looks bad – the batter should now the count. Yet another example of the broadcasters’ “bias” against Velez.

I am just worried that I will not believe it all. The new Kirk seems to young to be a captain. I know they will pull that he is just a hand on the ship and the real captain will die or something and hand command over to him, but its still really hard to believe.

GFNLIS was there with the little ones, wife, and father this time and I caught the lats half of the game with them, roamed for pictures the rest of the time. There’ll be a FanPost coming up soon, but a few quick hits.

-Kieshnick hit a BOMB. It was over the 365 sign in RCF, hit the jumbotron screen about 15-20 feet behind the fence and 30 feet high.

-Turned a nice double play and Angel had quite a stretch to get the last out.

-Crawford hit a homer too, and it just seemed to carry. I wasn’t sure it was hit good enough, but it carried over the LF fence, also over the 365 foot marker just about.

Stay tuned!

but I hope I’m wrong.

If nothing else, I love good pitching, and this team appears to have oodles of it (I’m not sure if I have ever before used the word oodles).

I’m not going to get my hopes up on Zito, but he sure does look different. He even looked better those first two starts, even though he didn’t really get the right result. Having him turn into a decent #3 or #4 starter would be like finding an old stash of valuable comic books for this team.

I actually enjoy watching him pitch, only because when something goes wrong, I’m not disappointed. When any other Giant so much as gives up a hit, that upsets me, because they are supposed to be good. But when Zito turns in “average,” I’m happy. While that makes me weird, I honestly enjoy the days that he pitches.

Dodgers suck

I hate the dodgers, and every other team. Time to bring frandsen in at second, put burriss as a utility role along with torres and send velez down. Let’s go giants and sweep the snakes!

by giant on Apr 22, 2009 9:00 PM PDT reply actions

If Burriss loses his starting spot, he should be sent down to AAA Fresno. Burriss likely has a future with this club while Velez likely does not. Burriss definitely should be starting somewhere and not rotting on the bench, because if he is not starting but on the roster he will rot (see: Schierholtz, Nate).

by wilriv21 on Apr 22, 2009 9:09 PM PDT up reply actions

do think that Frandsen could get regular at-bats in a utility role? with Uribe and Aurilia on the roster, I don’t think Frandsen would get ABs and would be lost. do you agree, or do you trust Bochy to favor the young player over the two veterans?

Brand new adoptive daddy for the Big Unit. This is one of the only ways a 5' 10" father can have a 6' 10" son.

by Speedforthewin on Apr 22, 2009 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions

If Burriss is struggling Franny could get a couple start a week at 2b. If Sandoval becomes Zito;s caddy there is another possibly start there. When Renteria rest either Uribe or Frandsen could start.

by wilriv21 on Apr 22, 2009 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree completely with his usefulness, but I think that Uribe can do the same. I want Frandsen in that role, if it means he gets regular ABs, but the track record from Bochy is that Uribe would get ABs and Frandsen would not.

by Speedforthewin on Apr 22, 2009 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I can buy the Frandsen as utility guy. There really is not a lot left in his skill potential that AAA can develop. He does seem to be playing a lot of SS down there.

I think it is interesting Uribe was chosen to play 3rd today. I am not so sure Richie would survive a Steel Cage match with Uribe if it came to that a few weeks down the road.

Where is my beer & chili dog?

by daveinexile on Apr 23, 2009 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions

With Burriss as the starter at 2nd I think the die is cast. He needs to play as the starter for another 2-4 weeks. The Brass thought he was dramatically more developed then Frandsen at the end of spring training so ride it out. Don’t change horses mid stream. Set and maintain the precedent that 2-3 poor weeks will not cost your job just because you have less than 3 years MLB service time.

Otherwise I agree with the consensus here- Burriss must be played every day either SF or Fresno but not the benched. He just as not developed enough of his potential to be consider anything near a polished product.

Sure, but is there a reason Burriss bats 2nd and Renteria 8th. Because, Burriss doesn’t “know how” to bat 8th? Not that big of deal I suppose.

Maybe panicking is the better word. 2 walks today is nice. But, I worry his offensive struggles are starting to weigh on his mind, creating fumbles on the base paths and in defense. Maybe he needs a day off, or a visit to triple-A. Out of the spot light, maybe he’ll regain his glow.
