Around SBN: Sixers Vs. Celtics: Countdown To Game Seven

Post-Game Fun Chatter!

Quick jottings:

  • When Burriss hit into a double play with the bases loaded and no one out, I almost drove my car through a storefront window. That's only a slight exaggeration.
  • About once every two weeks, I'm allowed to remind everyone that I was in favor of the Edgar Renteria signing. This is one of those times.
  • Matt Cain's hangdog expression and pouty demeanor might have conned the Giants into scoring runs for him, but at what cost? He can't feel good about taking a shortcut to win-learning.
  • C'mon, Boch. Don't play lefty/righty match-ups with a six-run lead. That's really annoying.
  • All the Giants have to do is continue their pace from the last four games, and they'll be the best team of all time. I don't see anything wrong with that logic.
  • I usually just chalk up the Peavy starts as losses, hoping that the Giants can just eke out the other two or three games in the series. Man, it's nice to actually rough Peavy up a bit.

Whoop!

Actually There Are No Such Rumors

The fact is that Bengie will get the day off with Sandoval catching Zito. I would bet that Winn get’s the day too with Nate starting in RF. But I have heard no such rumor and uplike paboperfecto I don’t just make them up but rather acknowledge that I am just guessing.

Bochy is stupid again

From Chris Haft:

Manager Bruce Bochy said that for the series finale, Rich Aurilia will start at first base, Juan Uribe will play third and Pablo Sandoval, who has started the previous 13 games at third base, will catch for the first time this season.

Also Velez will probably be in Center field. The only hope for Nate is if Winn is miraculously sitting as well.

I Am Betting That If Rowand Rests It Will Be Torres Not Velez In CF

I too would rather the Giants continue to go with Ishi when he is starting to get hot. But the bench does need to be kept fresh and thus do need to get some starts from time to time including Richie instead of Ishi.

My bet would be that if Velez plays it will be at 2B instead of Burriss and I would have no problem with this. Again, the bench needs to get some starts to keep sharp.

Once again, the Manager doesn't win or lose the game

(although he has helped lose 2-3 times this season). Today the Giants got some good pitching and some timely hitting. Odd, how that adds up to a win. Odd, how that part was fun.

But Bochskull did manage to make several bone headed moves that frustrated us. What’s with the lineup? I still don’t get it. While, I am happy to see Nate at the plate (and get a solid hit after working the count a bit), he still needs a START. I feel today’s good feelings are just setting me up for crushing rage, when Ishi and Nate don’t start tomorrow… let alone a “hot” Renteria subed for Uribe or some other nonsense. Bullpen issues? I got bullpen issues. Just can Bochy, Ginats Brassz, so I can give some new manager a “chance” and be a little less pissed off for the rest of the season.

Cain's stuff

Matt Cain’s off-speed stuff seem really, really good so far. I don’t remember it being that good. He’s pitched really well so far (0 walks today!). I know he’s already really good. But he might just be primed to have that mystical “breakout” season.

And that is an awesome possibility.

Not gonna lie, GRM is right

The front office probably saw that they had two off days in the span of four days two weeks into the season, and figured Bengie wouldn’t have to take off any days between now and then, at which time they could make a decision on how fill out the roster. I’m not sure if Hinshaw would be the guy I would send down, but I definitely see the logic behind this (if that’s actually what they were going for.)

Hindshaw Wasn't Getting It Done And Earned His Demotion

I have no problem with skipping one of Sanchez’s turns in the rotation with all these off days. Another reliever will be called up if the Giants starters don’t go consistently deep into games during the upcoming 17 days without an off day to open May. In the mean time skipping a Sanchez start clearly makes him available from the pen if a long reliever is needed perhaps even as soon as tomorrow since he will have rested Saturday thru Tuesday.

It Is Pretty Clear Now Why Hindshaw Was Brought In In The 9th

They were going to send him down to Fresno so they wanted to give him one more MLB appearense before they sent him down.

That said, I do indeed agree that the management of the bullpen for the last 3 innings was suspect. I didn’t see any reason for going crazy with the whole lefty righty thing in the 7th or 8th even though I now understand the motive in the 9th.

by giantsrainman on Apr 22, 2009 1:10 AM PDT up reply actions

then why not let him pitch the whole 9th and save Miller(?)’s arm?

Another Off Day On Thursday Eliminates The Need To Save Anyone In The Bullpen's Arm

Bochy wanted to give Hindshaw the best chance possible (2 lefties to face) and thus had Miller face the switcher hitter and righty to open the inning. I really see no issue in this inning. But as I have already said I don’t see the point of going crazy on the whole lefty righty thing in the 7th and 8th.

by giantsrainman on Apr 22, 2009 1:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Best chance possible at what? If he’s just doing it out of sympathy because he’s getting sent down, let him pitch the whole inning. Miller didn’t need to face anyone. If that’s not the consideration, leave Miller in. It’s not terribly dumb, just odd, and kind of a waste of time.

He wanted his most resent MLB memory to be a positive one. This makes perfect sense to anyone open minded enough to try and figure out why. This is about the next time he is called up it is not about making him feel better about being sent down.

Yes, I can agree with your Hinshaw take.

In general the whole L/R Madness thing though drives nuts. These guys are middle relief mainly because they are your least reliable arms on the 10-12 man staff. If you keep bringing in your least reliable arms your going to get 1 or 2 that are just plain "off" that night and then runs score. Then you have to ask a weak "O" to make it back up with less than 10 outs. It is just managing straight into the biggest weak points a squad like this has.

Great game by Matteh. No harm in giving up nine hits in six innings as long as you keep the ball in the park and don’t go walking guys. Those are the kind of games that give any team fits; one or two baserunners almost every inning but virtually nothing to show for it. The pitch count was pretty good considering the total batters faced.

I want some credit for the win

Renteria’s run producing outburst was clearly in response to my criticism of him in the lineup shuffle thread. Obviously I was trying to provoke EdgaRR when I said he should be benched for Cain starts (lots of fly balls) and Velez can bat 8th, Burriss playing short. I then got up to get something and was surprised to look over and see coffee cups, shoes, and a stuffed cat fly angrily out of my monitor
