Pre-game comment starter....

Which is worse: Bengie Molina hitting cleanup for the Giants or Dallas Braden as the Opening Day starter for the A's?

At home and on TV! This 4,242-game exhibition season is still killing me, though. The next time spring training is extended for the WBC, I'm going to do a fantasy draft for the spring.

C) Cards may have Khalil Greene hit cleanup for them on occasion this season

For realz? That would be even worse than the Nationals using Austin Kearns as a cleanup hitter last year.

While looking up Austin Kearns, I noticed he was the #7 overall pick back in 1998. The same year, the Giants drafted the following players in the first round:

Tony Torcato
Nate Bump
Arturo McDowell
Chris Jones (supplemental)
Jeff Urban (supplemental)

And in the second round, Eli Serrano.

Other random players from that draft:
Corey Patterson (#3 overall)
C.C Sabathia (two picks after Torcato)
Aaron Rowand (supplemental round)
Mark Prior (supplemental, by the Yankees)
Adam Dunn (after all the Giants’ first round and supplemental picks)
Barry Zito (third round, by the Rangers)
Andres Torres (fourth round)
Aubrey Huff (after the Giants had drafted approximately 500 people who never made it to the majors at all)
Matt Holliday (after the Giants had drafted approximately 7,000 people who never made it to the majors)
Cody Ransom (same round as Mark Teixeira – then a third baseman)
Juan Pierre (13th round)
J.J. Putz and B.J. Ryan (consecutive picks in the 17th round)
Ryan Braun (23rd round, then a catcher)
Mark Buehrle (38th round)
Dallas MacPherson (44th round – drafted as a pitcher, apparently)

Lots of fail and interesting selections that year. Though I guess you could probably find as much in any random draft year.

The last player drafted that year to make it to the majors was former Giant Scott Atchison, drafted in the 49th round by the Mariners.

I kind of forgot he was a Giant, to be honest. And he was on the team just two years ago!

Who are the only two players the Giants have ever drafted in the 50th round who’ve made it to the majors?

To be joined someday by Mike Loree, maybe.

It’s hard to even know how to begin to describe the massive fail of that lineup. Do you start with Bocock? Or with Castillo? Or with Roberts leading off? Or Randy Winn miscast as a #3 hitter? Or Zito starting opening day? Or Aurilia batting second and playing first?

When Ray Durham hitting fifth and Aaron Rowand hitting sixth are the sole highlights, run for the hills.

They actually seem to have an extremely sound business plan for the league. They have a few teams in good markets. They’re limiting league spending and promoting a slow expansion.

They’re also getting some of the best players in the world. At nice, cheap prices, that’s a pretty good deal.

Granted, the audience isn’t there, but from what I’ve seen they’ve worked that part into their plan. It might last for a while if they don’t panic and screw it up. I hope it does.

Why wouldn’t you want to show people what hat size you wear?

by Natto on Apr 2, 2009 8:38 PM PDT up reply actions

It goes with the flat bill.

Most likely, it came into fashion in lower income areas as a way to buy and wear a nice hat for a while, and then return it. It’s a bit of an urban look, so I’m just speculating. I have no evidence to back that up, but it makes a certain kind of sort of sense.

I believe the flat bill look took-off in the So ca area. If you look at the players in the pros that wear their hats like that, more times than not they originated from So Ca (just something I noticed). Tulo for example, wore it curved in Sunnyvale, and flattened it out when he played for CSULB.
