Post-Game Funstravaganza!

Man, what a great game! Everything looked sharp and crisp, and there were timely hits a-plenty! Of course, I'm talking about Street Fighter IV. The Giants game was pretty great if you turned it off after the 8th inning.

Fun not guaranteed

My idea of fun involves copious amounts of booze and some fine brown men. I see none of this here.

Lincecum has had a stomch ailment and had a fingernail problem that kept him from getting in bullpen sessions during ST. Bochy is absolutely right to be carefu lwith his pitch count this early in the season.

Not All Pitch Counts Are Alike

This is where I differ a lot with most managers and pitching coaches that use PC as the end all. Just listening to the game and following on Gameday you could tell you had a pitcher on the very top of his game. Dominating. Ease free. Stress free. In sync with his catcher. With plenty of off days ahead to get rest prior to his next start.

The ONLY way your remove a pitcher in a situation like today is if your pitcher begs out. If Lincecum did beg out I would have appreciated he did PRIOR to his AB in the bottom of the 8th.

by wilriv21 on Apr 18, 2009 5:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I think you’re wrong. There, I said it.

  • Spring training is for building up arm strength. Lincecum had an abbreviated spring training and didn’t get as much work in as desired because of the fingernail issue.
  • He’d been suffering from a stomach ailment that required being checked out by a doctor. Although he was cleared to play, it’s likely that being sick affected his stamina/hydration.
  • It’s early in the season and Lincecum is young. The idea is build a pitcher’s stamina, especially a yonug one’s. In his previous starts, he’d gone 3 and 5+ innings.

I don’t care how “on top of his game” and “stress free” he sounded to someone listening on the radio or how many days he gets to rest coming up. the game was tied 0-0. He gave them 8 terrific innings and the offense didn’t do jack. If he’d pitched a scoreless 9th and the game was still 0-0, would you leave him in for the 10th? The 11th?

My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman

by Goofus on Apr 18, 2009 6:02 PM PDT up reply actions

how long?

communicate with the kid and check his status. Lincecum mentioned he needed to find his rhythm. He did. He was locked in. Dealing.

How many pitches did he throw in the 9th? If he threw a few and stress free – possibly. His next start is scheduled in 7 days. He has plenty of time to rest.

Wish the Giants would leave the kid and his father alone. The kid is a freak. Let him have his own workout routine. Not all pitchers are the same.

by wilriv21 on Apr 18, 2009 6:19 PM PDT up reply actions

I have to agree with this. Of course, it’s possible that Bochy and Lincecum did indeed have this conversation during the bottom of the 8th. I hope one of the beat writers asked Bochy about it after the game.

On the other hand — Bochy made very similar moves last night, and they paid off. Tonight, they didn’t.

Bottom line, if the Giants offense wasn’t a sucking chest wound, Bochy wouldn’t have this problem…

No, really, I have updated my blog this year: http://skaldheim.livejournal.com/tag/baseball

his pitch count was 98.

98. he pitched 8 innings and didn’t even break 100. lincecum was ON FIRE today, and he’s gone 130 in an outing and been fine. obviously that’s not something you should always do, but if he can’t hit 110 pitches in an outing that’s a problem.

by quincy0191 on Apr 18, 2009 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Waaaay to early in the season to let Lincecum throw 130 pitches, especially after a limited spring training and battling a stomach condition.

Taking an unnecessary risk with your franchise’s health because he was “ON FIRE” is irresponsible. I’ve got a lot problems with Bochy’s decision-making skills, but geez.

Right as rain

Goofus, youi’re right as rain here.

Did I want Tim to come out for the ninth? Yes. Did I think he would? Maybe.

But good Lord! It’s early in the season, Tim’s spring training work was limited by a split fingernail, he’s been sick three times in the last month, Tim threw more pitches last season than anyone, he threw more pitches in a single game than anyone (by six), and this season is just a preliminary to the next decade, anyway.

What would have been the point?

by sharksrog on Apr 19, 2009 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Bullpucky!

He was not going to get much abouve 110 by pitching the 9th. There was no real fear of 130. Early in the season or not it was indeed flat ass dumb to pull Timmy. Their was almost no risk and great reward to be gained.

I can tell you the consensus opinion from the left field bleachers yesterday was that moves like that one yesterday to pull timmy is yet another example of why Bochy will be joining the ranks of the unemployed next year, if not sooner.

by bonbrillio on Apr 19, 2009 5:17 PM PDT up reply actions

The team has way too much of their future invested in his right elbow and shoulder to just ask him what he wants to do. Freak or not, erring on the side of caution in a 0-0 tie where nothing Tim was going was going to ignite the offense was the right move.

Your argument would make some sense if Tim was clinging to a 1-0 lead and three more outs finishes things, but that wasn’t the case. As I said before, even if Tim had put up another zero, we’re stilling talking about an offense that failed to score in the bottom of the 9th.

Big Difference

Between trying to score win a score wins the game and trying to score when you need two just to tie. There is just no way to say that they would not have scored in the 9th without the pressure of being down 2 and the motivation that a single run wins the game.

if you actually want to win the ballgame, you might want to pinch hit for the kid when he comes up with men on in a 0-0 game. Unless this is in fact an NHL regular season game and there’s one point awarded for a tie.

Leverage

There was enough leverage in a tie game after eight innings that if Brian Wilson is the Giants’ best pitcher, he should have been in the game to begin the ninth inning — just as he, not Bobby Howry, should have been brought in at the beginning of the eighth inning Wednesday to make a two-inning, two-run save.

IMO managers are slaves to baseball’s pre-conceived definition of when a closer should pitch.

But the bottom line would seem to be that this season isn’t going to matter, anyway. Get Tim Lincecum all the wins you can to aid his repeat Cy Young effort, get Randy Johnson win #300, get the run-scoring psychology surrounding Matt Cain changed, hope to reclaim Barry Zito as at least a #4 starter, build Jonathan Sanchez’s confidence to take advantage of his swing-through stuff. Give the young guys more experience and more time for them to be evaluated.

But wins? Nice to have, take a lot of frustration away for a day, but not really critical in the overall scheme of things.

The future isn’t now; it’s next decade. The Giants are better than they’ve played — but not as good as they need to be for their won-loss record this season to make a significant difference.

by sharksrog on Apr 19, 2009 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions

While I was sad to see Lincecum go, and I knew that would be the game, that wasn’t my problem.

The Affeldt move was inexcusable. We brought in the best lefty on the market, the one that can also get righties out, and what does Bochy do? Pulls him. Of course. Sure, he walked a batter, but he had blown through the first one, and started the next guy 0-2. And when he missed, it was close. Not his bleeding fault.

I liked the idea of Manny’s trying to steal home — and I’m not as big a fan of base stealing as most.

On the radio, Duane Kuiper said that with the delay in Doug Davis’ motion, Manny might have a chance of stealing home. How much chance did Bengie have of driving Manny in with two outs? 30%?

If the chances of Manny’s being successful were close to 50%, why not? Particularly with Tim Lincecum on the mound and off to a fine first-inning start?

Disgusted?

Mark, I realize how frustrating it is when the Giants lose — particularly when they waste arguably Tim Lincecum’s best effort of his career. But let’s keep things in perspective.

This year doesn’t really matter, and the worse the Giants perform, the higher their draft pick in 2010. Yes, they want to see the players of the future develop — but the games’ outcomes are secondary to that.

Heck, I wound up the day on a high note. No, the San Jose Giants’ games aren’t on milb.com — but the games of their opposition last night, the Stockton Ports, are. So I got to hear Bay Area native Brandon Crawford’s game-winning 10th inning home run. That came at about two o’clock your time, so I certainly wouldn’t have expected you to be listening, but so far the Giants’ #4 pick in the 2009 draft has been arguably the Giants’ biggest minor league surprise.

Sure, Buster Posey suffered the hat trick, and the Little Giants didn’t hit much and blew a late lead. But Angel Villalona again flashed the leather, as he surprisingly has done a fine job off so far in 2009. And Crawford, batting in the two-hole, hit his third homer of the season — one ahead of Angel and tied with Buster for the team lead.

Right now the Giants’ top two young middle infielders — Manny Burriss and Kevin Frandsen — are light hitters. Crawford, a lifelong Giants fan who two years ago considered a good possibility to be a first-round draft pick last year, us batting over .400 in his brief minor league career and is showing some pop.

So I went to bed a very happy man — even with the Sharks down a game in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. With you living on the East Coast, Crawford’s homer came too late for you to go to bed happy. But you could have been happy first thing this morning.

The Giants have their top five prospects in San Jose, and seven of their top nine. And that doesn’t even include Crawford or Roger Kieschnick, considered by some to be the Giants’ #2 power-hitting prospect, behind only Villalona. I’m not sure the Giants have EVER had as much minor league talent at any one place as they have right now in San Jose. Do you know the way?

In my opinion Jeremy Affeldt is the second best reliever in the bullpen, and this is the third time already he’s pulled him when he shouldn’t have. Twice for Howry, who’s not as good, and today for Wilson in a non save situation. If I’m Affeldt, I take Bochy in the office and tell him that he’s not Steve Kline and is able to get righties out.

I agree with your larger point that Bochy is numbskull. But Ishikawa to me looks like just another Giants 4A guy. I like his OBP and D. Maybe—I doubt it, but maybe—if given a couple years of starts at the big league level, he just might learn to hit major league pitching some day.

Bottom line for me, I just can’t see Ishikawa ever amounting to a difference-making first baseman for the Giants.
