Quick SJ assessment

My son and I went to the game in Stockton on Thursday night. MadBum started rocky, but his concentration and focus is a key strength. Combine that with his competitiveness and talent, and you have a winner. My seats were on the 3rd base line, and I got to watch MadBum and Posey warmup. Everything they did had a purpose. No wasted motions. Game faces on early. They may be a battery that is together for 10+ years.

Bumgartner gave up only one unearned run.  A broken bat single, where he had to jump out of the way at the bat head fly right at him.  A passed ball moved the runner to second.  The runner advanced to third , tagging up on a flyball. The runner scored when the next batter hit a soft line drive up the middle than Bumgartner deflected toward third.  Gillespie, never appeared to react to the ball. Bumgartner scrambled to the ball, and just missed getting the guy at first. After that, Bumgartner settled down, and kept the baby A's off balance the rest of the way. They were either way out in front on a lot of pitches, as there were at least 7 or 8 pop up outs, or he'd strike them out.

Posey’s first at bat was a laserbeam double off the right centerfield fence. It got out there so fast, I had a hard time following the flight of the ball. The force of the ball, left a dent in halfway up the wall. That dent was still visible when I walking out of the stadium after the game was over.

Crawford impresses me a lot. A field general in the middle of the infield. Good hands, quick release, strong arm. I have my doubts about Gillespie as a MLB 3rd baseman. He’s not particularly quick. He doesn’t have a strong arm, and he does not have a quick release. He does have excellent plate discipline, and a tight controlled swing. AnVil is just scratching the tip of his potential. His HR in the 9th, cleared the bullpen, traveling 400+ ft. I may go to see them play again on Sunday.

Got autographs before the game from Crawford, Posey, and Kieschnick. They were all very patient and gracious.

Quirarte looked dominant in the 9th.
