SJ Giants at Stockton Thursday 4/16 (Pics and Vids)
Cold night in Stockton
Got a ton of pics and a few vids
Quick notes, was bugging the Ports scout.
Bumgarner was throwing 88-93
Whittaker was throwing 88-90
Quirate was throwing 90-92
LOTS of scouts
I counted 8 radar guns firing at the same time
Sat next to a guy who said he was a Twins scout
The lady was not a scout, she sweet talked a scout into borrowing the gun
still getting used to the camera, hope you enjoy
BUTT LOAD OF PICS HERE
Grant hitches a ride to the game
A Brute Sighting
Bum a Dealing
Whittaker slinging the ball

Putting “butt load” just under AnVil’s picture…..hmmm….Freudian slip?

Ever been?
Merkin, have you been at that great Stockton stadium except to watch Tim Lincecum or Madison Bumgarner? You front-runner, you! :)

Wow, Merkin!
Three games in Stockton, and you snagged views of Tim Lincecum, Tim Alderson and Madison Bumgarner. That’s AWESOME!
I still find it funny that I saw you at Tim Lincecum’s game but didn’t yet know you. And then when I saw your pictures, I realized I had been standing about 15 feet away from you behind the Giants’ bullpen and then sitting a section or two away from you during the game.
By the way, Dick Tidrow was at that game, as well. I read about it later, but didn’t see him that night. Did you perhaps bump into him?
And wouldn’t you agree that the Stockton Stadium is really cool? My son asked me if they still played out by the ice rink where he played several away games of hockey when he was a kid. I told him that they had moved and that the new stadium was great.

Yeah, saw Tidrow....
He was a nice guy, obviously shared the same opinion we all had of Timmy after seeing him mow down Ports…..
Box score from that night
And the 1 hit was a ball up the middle juggled by the 2nd baseman,….

Angel's ass is enormous
But as long as he keeps hitting homers, I’m okay with it

Nah he’s really not that fat. I was expecting him to wear pajama sized uniform like Prince Fielder when I saw him.

Surprised
I was surprised at how soft Angel’s hands were. In the San Jose opener, he made a backhanded scoop of a double play relay while fully stretch out. Somewhat of an in between hop, too. Angel appears to be a much better fielder than I was expecting.
I wonder if he’s still taking ground balls at third before games?

Yep, he looks good around the bag too from what I’ve seen in SJ so far.

Great seats
Wow, you have great seats, Merkin. I’m just getting this now, so obviously I’m a bit late. I live in Martinez, so it’s a decent drive.
You mentioned free parking near the stadium. When I saw Tim pitch, I parked several blocks away, but also for free. Since I left the game right after he came out, I walked those several blocks after dark.
It felt a little sketchy, particularly when I came across a group of guys, but I just said “hi,” and there were no issues.

Great pics.
We’re going to the game Sunday, any useful info regarding the stadium?
by Merope on Apr 18, 2009 7:35 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
hmmmm.... lets see
been there a few times, but not much in the way of tips
every seat is pretty good, and you can always move down
Sunday Day Game… sunscreen of course
If you get there a little early, free parking 1-2 blocks away
not the greatest neighborhood, but its a day game so I personally feel pretty safe
BBQ in center…Ball tip is tasty
Fried Asparagus….SOGGY and NASTY
I will be there on Sunday as well, if you want to say hello drop me a line

I was there last year and they didn’t do the fried asparagus. When I’d had it before it was fantastic. I’m going with the Meropes…if I can fix my car by tomorrow.

I loved seeing all the pics of bumgarner. Not sure who all of the hitters were, though.
re bumgarner: I’m still eagerly awaiting driveline mechanics’ review of him. I don’t know much about mechanics, but from reading the site and seeing these pictures, I’ve at least learned that bumgarner’s pronation appears to be good (don’t quote me on that)

Numbers
Tim Lincecum wears #55, and I believe the best #55 in baseball history may be Orel Hersheiser. I think Tim will surpass him.
Madison Bumgarner wears #17, and I can’t think of any great players who wore that number, although I’m pretty sure there are some.
As you mention, Buster Posey wears #7, and I doubt he’ll surpass Mickey Mantle.
Then again, I think Tim wore #14 at San Jose, so obviously players often change numbers by the time they reach the majors.
I asked Tim’s dad what number he thought Tim would choose, and he said that he didn’t know, that Tim had worn a variety of numbers growing up. I think he wore either #13 or #10 at the University of Washington. I don’t think either of us thought Tim would choose #55. I guess it was given to him before he was on the Giants’ roster, and he was OK with it.
I didn’t like it at first, but now it seems to fit just right. (Think how skinny he would look if he wore #1 or #11!) And as someone here mentioned, in Tim’s first outing, he pitched into the 5th inning, yielded 5 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks, while striking out 5.
Just to finish Tim’s numerology, his debut came on 5/6/7 (May 6th, 2007, which appropriately was Willie Mays’ birthday.) By the way, I think Tim will pitch in Colorado on the second anniversary of that debut, and my nephew who goes to school in Denver is poised to attend.
Speaking of numbers, I believe Tim’s 76% strikes (75 strikes on 99 pitches) Saturday was a career high. Didn’t someone mention here that Tim had 18 batters that he either got ahead of 0-2 or disposed of in two pitches? Now THAT’S good control!
