So I was curious to see how Zito was doing
I have to be honest, I am an A's fan and I have taken pleasure out of seeing Zito struggle with the Giants because I was angry he left the A's. The numbers do not show it but Zito stuff looks nearly as good as it did his CY young year, his velocity is not all the way back but it is night and day from last season. In about 2 starts I have a feeling Zito will start throwing up quality starts regularly

Too bad though
Thanks for trying to cheer us up, Athletic.

Oh, we can tell you all about throwing up during Zito’s starts.

Randy Winn is going to catch that. And he'll do it real classy-like too.
In all fairness...
His fastball velocity was consistently at about 87 or 88 last night. It was more like 83-85 last year.

He could throw 103 for all I care, but if he can’t hit the broadside of a barn he’s useless to me.

I think you guys should be encouraged
tust me I saw Zito pitch for 6 years, this is the best his stuff has looked since 2005 if his stuff stays like this he will have a decent season
Would you like to put some money on that prediction?

Fair enough
Zito sucks
the Giants Defense sucks
the offense sucks the worst
The Giants have the 2 fattest players in the leauge
Is that better?

Has anyone noticed how much Cain looks like John Noble?

I used to compare him to Bobby from King of the Hill, but this is my new one.
That’s how Cain will look after this season if he doesn’t get any more run support.

My question
is why, last night, didnt the big-headed one take him out after two straight walks in the 6th. I get that the bullpen has been overworked, but in a Zito start, they should expect to be worked.
At the risk of being killed by you guys (never stopped me before), I’m gonna agree with you, Athletic. It looks like his “stuff” is a lot better right now than it has been in the past two years (at least this early). I think we can look at a semi-productive season out of him. What happens to this game if lewis doesn’t turn a simple base hit into an RBI triple?
by scottishgiants on Apr 17, 2009 10:42 AM PDT reply actions
You mean if Lewis doesn’t turn a catchable line drive into a triple. If he had broken correctly the play wouldn’t have been half as difficult as he made it look.

Sorry about the snark dude— Gaints fans are in a foul mood, and the regulars here are by and large pricks anyway. You’re totally right that his stuff looks pretty decent. His curveball was nasty last night. However, he’s still a fairly immature guy that gets rattled too easy and loses his control. (e.g.-last night after hitting Martin (or was it Kemp?) on the foot in the 6th)
Anyway, I too predict at least more quality starts out of him this season. Not enough to justify his ridiculous paycheck (thus the frosty reception from the McCoven) but enough that those of us not blinded by rage can recognize the improvement.
Kudos for attempting a conciliatory tone before the onslaught.

I watched a lot of Zito's A's starts too
I’m not seeing the resurgence yet. In that above-mentioned 2005 season, Zito made 35 starts—21 were “quality starts,” and only 4 times did he go 5 innings or fewer (hey, he’s already halfway there for 2009).
What’s been typical for Zito as a Giant (and this is true in 09 so far) is that the things he rarely used to do—either lasting only 5 innings, or getting knocked out early—are pretty much expected.
My favorite Zito game
8/30/2005 against the Angels with first place riding on the outcome. Zito went 9, Colon went 9.1, and the A’s won 2-1 in 11. It is unimaginable to think of Zito doing that today—matching zeros with another team’s ace in the biggest game of the season.

Seeing this topic now....
and despite the fact I may be tarred and feathered by the masses….the Green Fan has a point…..sure it may be on his head…..but a point nonetheles…….according to PitchFX, however accurate that is……Zito’s velocity was better on 4/16 then at any point last year…….lets see more data before we make any conclusions…..but this could be interesting……
