Around SBN: Dana White Announces Koscheck vs. Hendricks for UFC on FOX

I just cannot figure out which is worse.

Bochy announced prior to the start of the season "it is important that we get off to a fast start."   Sabean reiterated the same sentiments while being interviewed on the radio.   This is 2009.  This year things will be done the "Giants way".  We are getting a great bullpen in Howry and Affeltd.  These guys wont blow games.  The new youth injected line-up will be invigorating and the team will score more runs.   "The guys really feel like they are true contenders this year."  We got rid of the guys who can't get the ball over the plate.  We will walk a lot less guys this year. Zito will get off to a fast start.  At least Zito will not start the opening game.   Lincecum always wins after a loss.   The line-up this year will be more patient at the plate.  Seems as if almost all of the above is false.  I will still give Affeltd the benefit of the doubt.  But using Howry against lefties, is like using Walker against lefties; its doomed to failure. Is Bochy just dumb, or stupid, or just thick headed?  Ok, its only 8 games.  But wow, are we any better so far then last year?  Do we have the best pitching staff in the league?   The acquistion of Randy Johnson will have a stabilizing effect on the pitching rotation.  Crap, so far except for Matt Cain, the rest of the staff is pitching wore than Kevin Correia.   So I ask you, the Holy McCoven, which is the worst?

I can’t decide…all of the above

by Frank144 on Apr 16, 2009 3:11 AM PDT reply actions

I know this has the potential to be a “Let’s wait while we patch the hole in the Titanic” reply, but I honestly think we need a few more weeks to really start worrying. The starting pitching has been terrible. We’ve gotten two good starts from Cain, and that’s it. Let’s see if the starting pitching starts to right itself. The team has barely any offensive firepower, I know. If we want to go by this first week, then we can say Rowand looks like the player we hoped he would be. Molina is still hitting fairly well. Lewis appears to be progressing. Winn has been solid.

Two weeks from now, though, all of this could be moot. I honestly believe Sandoval can hit at this level. I think Burriss can hit at least .260. I think Uribe, Renteria, and Aurilia are garbage, but I’m hoping for them to get the last laugh at me.

Maybe this is a team that is good at home, and terrible on the road? If I said I thought the jury was anything but out at this point, I’d be a fool.

For me, the worst thing about the team so far is the Velez vs. Schierholtz debacle. It doesn’t speak well of the team’s player-evaluation skills that they clearly consider Eugenio to be the better player.

IAWTC. Even Mrs. nvsfg cringes every time velez steps on the field. We watched a little USA baseball last summer, and she remembers Juggernate. When Boulder Skull brings in Velez, she says “C’mon Bochy, Fast does not mean good”.

I support Mrs. nvsfg as the next manager for the SF Giants. Seriously.

Bob Howry’s career BAA is more than 10 points lower against lefties.

But everything else is terrible.

It’s way too early to panic. I’m sure disappointed with this lousy start, but it’s not going to continue. Even though the starters’ numbers are horrific, every starter not named Barry Zito has looked overpowering at times. As for the offense, I’m actually encouraged because Aaron Rowand is off to a good start, and should have been the hero last night. You worry about the veterans being over the hill, but Rowand, Molina and Winn have all looked good so far. As for the kids, they’re going to hit, with the probable exception of Manny Burriss, and the Giants will probably fix that pretty soon. Prior to spring training, it was pretty much set up for Frandsen to be the second baseman, and they let what happened in Arizona override their common sense. You would think veteran baseball men would know better. Have they forgotten guys like Todd Linden and Jason Ellison so quickly?

Howry

He certainly had some good years, but was last year an abberation? He sucked vs. lefties last year. He is several years older than Walker. Of course like most of us, we could probably think of about 20 more options to go in the poll. Including things like all of the above, stuff on Velez, even the fact that the pierzinski trade still haunts this team. That Bochy’s head is so large, how come he does not have baseball sense somewhere in his cranium. That Sabean figures he can win with the lowest on base percentage ever recorded. It feels bad to waste the hot streak of Rowand because you know he is going to get cold. The opposition that realizes you can get this guy out without throwing the ball over the plate does well against him. When these teams make a mistake and actually throw strikes to him, he can still rake it. Most of the league however has caught on. However, if he were playing for someone else, the giants pitching staff would not get it. They throw balls to guys that take, and throw strikes to guys that rake.

There are so many things to be concerned about with this team, but I’m starting to be especially concerned about the defense on the left side of the field. Renteria is looking below average at best defensively, Sandoval is not getting the ball out of his glove fast enough on throws to first, and what the hell is going on with Freddy in left field? I love the guy, but I think he’s actually regressed defensively since last season. I will now light myself on fire.

My plans for 2009: getting married and attending Tim Lincecum Bobblehead Day.

I’m worried about Lincecum. Other than that, it’s been what I expected.

His hands-off approach has been admirable. Not totally sure I feel the same way about Lansford’s hands-off approach to Pandoval, but we’ll see.

Sandoval – 75% of 400 lbs is still pretty good, right?
Walks – they piss me off
Walker/Howry – Meh.
Zito – Was still going to be a Giant this year, no matter what. The only way I think we can expect him to be gone next year is if Sabean is replaced and the new GM decides to make his mark by working out a three-way trade, a la how the Rockies got rid of Hampton.
Johnson – He’ll get to 300, no worries there.
Raghetti looks like some kind of pasta. Righetti hasn’t ruined Lincecum. A sample size of two games is a little too early to panic here.
Taschner – Good for him, he always seemed like a good dude.

The travesty is, now that I have a Facebook account, I’m now finding out I know some people who pretend to be Dodger fans. And I hate these people.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

People, c'mon

NOTHING is worse than Barry Zito still being a Giant.

Allow me to fix that for you:
NOTHING is worse than Barry Zito stillbeing a Giant.

Sabean’s not going to be able to trade Zito away, so the STILL part isn’t that bad. The fact that he’s a Giant at all, making $17-18mil a year… THAT’S bad.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

by JRPhillips on Apr 16, 2009 11:41 AM PDT up reply actions

IF ANYTHING....

…sums up the incompetence of team management, it is the fact that an over the hill outfielder under contract for $6.5mm+ cannot find a job at league minimum. Talk about a shitty contract.

The Myth about Rags and Lincecum

To think that Rags does not have a say in Lincecum’s motion, is just fodder for the fans. Of course the Great Rags has tinkered with Timmy, much to Timmy’s father’s shagrin. Timmy should be good enough to right himself. Whatever happenned to that stud Estes who had one great year with the giants? Minus the injuries, he has never lived-up to his potential. To think the guy has to beg for a job, and Zito breaks the bank. Holy cow. Flick Nathan off as not needed, and sign Zito a few years later. The giants time line looks eerie.

by bradleybear on Apr 16, 2009 2:35 PM PDT reply actions

The Taschner thing is over

He walked a few, gave up a few hits and 4 runs. The phils, trying to make him more comfortable told him, just go out there as if you were still pitching for the giants. That was a major mistake in judgement;
