Quick Poll

I've figured out how to create sections on the sidebar of this site. It only took me several years. So take a look at the left sidebar, and vote in the poll. I'll follow the will of the people on this one, as I really don't have a preference. The section would contain three of Steve's most recent posts.

Also of note: The extra GameThreads are going to get their own section on the left too. We'll post links in the comments and main post of existing GameThreads for those who arrive late.

Poll
What to do with Minor Lines, the fantastic daily updates from Steve S?
Nothing. It's fine the way it is.

If they don’t get their own section (which they should), I’m all for recommending them. WE may all know how to find them, but the “we” who post 20,000 comments a season are probably a pretty small minority of the people who visit the site. Lurkers and passersby may not be wise to the ways of Minor Lines.

I think a dedicated section on the left sidebar is a good compromise – other non minor lines rec’d fanposts won’t be crowded out, and those who like to see the minor lines grouped together will still get that. As jcb mentioned, the downside is the higher chance that casual readers will miss it. My feeling is that the new readers who would be interested in the minor lines probably aren’t as casual and would find it, through reading comments from others or just by scrolling around.

by Frank144 on Apr 14, 2009 6:08 PM PDT reply actions

One thing the new setup would do, though, is put the Minor Lines on the Yahoo! Giants page. That might mitigate some of the damage done to the casual collective.

how far off topic it’s become. One of those is important (I think).

and even more glad we won’t have 99% of recommended posts this season be things that are essentially old the day after they are posted.

by positiveuphemism on Apr 14, 2009 7:02 PM PDT reply actions

Are these then posted on the main page?

Or to access these do we have to click on Minor Lines? I think the best solution to this is having them posted on the main page with the scores of the games up there, then below the break the full details. I’m sure he’ll get just as much traffic from us if they are in a different section, but then n00bs won’t know where to go for them probably.

The headline is posted on the main page, like it is now as a FanPost. I’m against more on the front page. That’s why I’m moving the overflow threads to the left, and it’s why I break up long-ass pieces like today’s MLB.tv post.

by Grant Brisbee on Apr 14, 2009 7:18 PM PDT up reply actions

So essentially, steve s will just have the option for his FanPosts to be in this section? Or will it actually be below your posts in the main page. I’m not quite sure how this would be set up.

If it’s how I’m understanding then it doesn’t seem much different than a regular FanPost.

I love it. It’s clever as heck. Plus the gal writing the Pebble Report really knows what she’s talking about. I went around the Cal League affiliates on SBN and found only some of them doing regular minor league reports. GasLamp Ball (Padres) and Crawford Boxes (Astros) don’t do anything at all. Aside from Steve S here, the best ones I’ve seen were the aforementioned Pebble Report and the reports on True Blue LA. I know…it makes no sense that the Dodgers can do anything right. But I need the info for my jorb.

My only concern

is how it affects the Mobile content. I’m on the road more than I’m at a computer so I have to check the site on my phone. The mobile site only runs main page and fanposts. I want to be able to see the minor lines and gameday threads so I will be greatly saddened if my McC coverage is limited by telecommunications… well probably not but whatever

by dogdays on Apr 15, 2009 10:12 AM PDT reply actions

by dogdays on Apr 15, 2009 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions

To clarify, the three most recent minor lines would appear on the left sidebar. Kind of like a FanPost, but on the left. The first GameThread would always be on the main page, and links to any additional GameThreads would appear at the bottom of that post.

There will be a repository for the minor lines, too. Underneath the logo on the left-hand side, just under where you choose “wide” or “narrow”, there is a little box titled “sections”. You could then click on the minor lines link there to get the full list.

Grant, if you leave only the first of many Gameday Threads in the main section of the page, then even if there are links to new threads below the post, some folks might end up posting to the first thread instead of the most recent one. So, for example, someone might post to thread #1 in the 7th inning while most of us are over on thread #5.

Not sure what you can do about this if anything, but it might be an issue. Or might not.
