minor lines, 4/13/09

AAA: Fresno lost to Tacoma 1-0

Fresno: RF John Bowker: 2 for 3, 2B, BB, CS
Fresno: 3B Ryan Rohlinger: 1 for 3, HBP
Tacoma: CF Prentice Redman: 1 for 4, HR, SO
Tacoma: C Jeff Clement: 0 for 2, 2 BB, SO

Fresno: RHP Ryan Sadowski: 6.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K--1 HR
Fresno: RHP Osiris Matos: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 K
Tacoma: RHP Randy Messenger: 1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 K

Bowker had two of the Grizzlies' four hits and one of their two walks, raising his AVG to .400 through 15 ABs.  Rohlinger was the only other Grizzly to reach base twice.  The Mariners' 29-year-old Redman, who is Tike's younger brother, provided the game's only run with a HR to lead off the 6th inning.  Clement reached base twice, but his AVG slipped further to .067.

Sadowski had a very effective start in his season debut.  Matos struck out four of the eight batters he faced.  Ex-Giant Messenger earned his second save of the season.

AA: Connecticut defeated New Hampshire 8-1

Connecticut: DH Antoan Richardson: 2 for 4, 3B, 2B, BB, SO, SB
Connecticut: LF Bobby Felmy: 2 for 2, 2 BB, SH
New Hampsire: 1B David Cooper: 2 for 4, HR

Connecticut: RHP Henry Sosa: 4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K--1 HR
Connecticut: LHP Jesse English: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 K

Every Defender in the lineup had at least one hit.  Among the four Defenders with two hits each were Richardson, who had a couple XBH, and Felmy, who reached base four times.  Cooper, whom the Blue Jays selected 17th overall in last year's draft, led off the 4th inning with his first HR of the year.

Sosa had an effective start, at least statistically, other than the HR.  English provided three innings of scoreless relief in his second appearance of the year.  Sosa and English combined for a 3/10 GO/FO line.

A+: San Jose lost to Bakersfield 4-3

San Jose: 2B Nick Noonan: 2 for 4, HR, BB, SO
San Jose: C Buster Posey: 2 for 3, HR, 2 BB, SO, PB

San Jose: RHP Oliver Odle: 4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K--2 HR
San Jose: RHP Garrett Broshuis: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K--1 HB

Noonan and Posey combined to reach base seven times while connecting for their 1st and 2nd HRs of the season, respectively.

Odle had less than a quality start in his season opener.  After spending all of the last two seasons in Connecticut, Broshuis made his 2009 season debut back in the Cal League.

A-: Augusta had their first scheduled off-day
(Their next scheduled off-day is May 10.)

At least Broshuis didn’t end up in the Boston org like it was reported.

would it be possible to list the lines of AnVil and Posey regardless of how they do?

I’m interested in those guys enough that I find them going 0-4 more significant than other players going 4-4 (not that you should leave the latter out). I could look up the box scores myself—it’s just that you’re already providing a great service here, so I just thought I’d give my 2 cents on how you could make it better.

It’s nice to see Posey go yard. If he can hit closer to 20 HRs per year, as opposed to the lower 10s, that would be a nice boost to the offense. Has anyone watched where he hits the ball when he hits it real hard? I think I’ve heard that he uses the whole field. However, considering the dimensions of the Mays Field, a bit of a tendency to pull the balls he gets up in the air wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.

What I recall is not last year, but the year before. I think I was the person most annoyed by listing Anvil every game, and I kinda made a daily point of saying so.

Yeah, it’s a balancing act, how much to concentrate on prospects and still represent all the others in the minors as appropriate. I’ve justified it by saying this is “minor lines,” not “prospect lines.” Then again, I’ve admitted that for relief pitchers, I pretty much list only the prospects.

I’m not going to list Anvil every day. A few years ago I used to download stats and do a feature in which I would list how the prospects had done over a recent period of time (perhaps a week, or a month). I stopped doing that since MILB.com now has splits, both monthly and covering the last ten games.

Perhaps I should do a survey of what people want in the posts. Is just listing the lines or is having my text/commentary/notes more valuable? What’s the right balance in that regard?

by steve S on Apr 14, 2009 5:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Backup Minor Liner

When I fill in for Steve S I list the top prospects no matter what they do, because I figure the people want to know what Villalona/Mad Bum/Posey/etc. are doing. FWIW

Keep doing it exactly the same. People can look at the box scores if they want to know who went oh-for-four and whatnot.

by Dan from NM on Apr 14, 2009 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Either keep doing what you’re doing, which is a great job, by just making a judgement call and do what you think is right, or create a standard about what lines you’d list. There would have to be certain performances to list, like players that day with 2 hit games, reaching base 3 times, or a home run would be listed on offense.

For me...

I’m the same as Steve…I don’t think that just being a big name is enough to merit a listing. I’d prefer the commentary and context over taking the time to fill in an extra line for someone who isn’t earning the line for that day.

by BruteSentiment on Apr 14, 2009 8:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The commentary/notes is definitely the most valuable part for me, Steve. In fact, I’ve usually always already been to the individual game box scores, but i still come here to check out your take on things. In fact, I’d make a plea to bring back the old system-wide overview for the recent weeks/months feature. For one thing, it’s useful having all those numbers in one place — you always notice something seeing them in bulk rather than just isolated on one players screen. But even if you just wanted to link to MILB and then give your commentary on the trend lines, I’d enjoy reading your perspectives.

His HR last night was an opposite field blast to right center. He has very good opposite field power, dating back to last year’s Cal League playoffs.

His HR on Sunday was a line drive that just cleared the wall, not your usual towering variety.

He’s more of a line drive hitter, but I’ve also heard he ‘tops’ the ball, meaning the ball comes off his bat with topspin, which would fall towards the ground instead of carrying up like most HR hitters with backspin.

Question:

Why/how did manager Steve Decker choose to start EME as his RF and start Bobby Felmy as his LF?

With EME in RF – normally reserved for the stronger arm – it would appear his arm is healthy again. He already has a couple of OF assists.
