The blue lines represent the end of an inning.
There was some discussion earlier about Sanchez's loss to the Padres and whether it had to do with some make-up issues or simple stamina problems. This graph shows a pretty steady decline in velocity between innings 1-4, and then a collapse in the 5th inning (in which Jonathan allowed 4 of his 5 runs), which definitely suggests that Dirty's ineffectiveness late in the game was mainly due to lack of stamina.

Sorry that the graph is so ugly, by the way, I don’t really know how to do this.

Maybe post it in a comment so comes out larger. Thanks for doing this. That’s a steady decline in velocity. It would be cool to compare this to a start in a few weeks from now to see if he is getting stronger.

yeah
i’m pretty sure sanchez’s fastball was in the low 90s all last year. the radio guys seemed pretty surprised by his velocity early on.

Yeah, his average fastball is historically about 91 MPH.

That does look similar, except he got much better results that game. The main differnce is that in last year’s game day Sanchez still had good off-speed pitches late in the game, even after he lost his fastball – 7 of the 12 pitches he threw in the 6th inning were off-speed, of which 6 went for strikes. All three outs were recorded on off-speed pitches.
In last week’s game, on the other hand, only 3 of the 28 pitches he threw in his last inning were off-speed pitches – one swinging strike on a change up, one slider in the dirt, and one change up that induced a hard grounder that should have started a double play, but ended up as an infield single because Pablo misplayed it (should have been an error, in my opinion). All three were thrown in the same at bat (Scott Hairston’s). Maybe Sanchez would have done better had he thrown more off-speed pitches late in the game.
